  • Thanks for this exciting compilation. I won't deign to compare these wonderful divas but Mme. Cerquetti's C in the "Ballo" goes right to the spot, because it's a real note, and integral to the phrase, not just there for effect; try to hear the whole aria, because that glorious climax has to be experienced as part of the whole. Her performance is outstanding.

  • I think the fillings just came out of my teeth... :)

  • Who is singing the Elvira in the Puritani ensemble?

  • Great compilation. Thanks, HomoClassicus! Thoughts on a few of the excerpts, broken into pieces so I can get them all posted:

Sutherland: Terrific as always, but she topped even this in later recordings of this aria.

Gruberova: The the high E-flat is fantastic, as expected, though she seems a bit lazy in the long coloratura semi-quavers!

  • Die Frau: I've always loved this recording, even with Rysanek's odd high C's. The real star here is Strauss!! What music!

Leontyne: Brava! No "Cher-like" down-scoop at the release of the B-flat as she did later!

Anderson: Sorry but her triplets are uncharacteristically sloppy. And she dodges the expected high E in the aria on this recording.

  • Deutekom: The most unique High D in the business.

Callas: It's exciting, for sure, yet I wonder how many years of singing it stole from her!

Jones: NO ONE did this role like she did.

Lorengar: HATE this piece, but Pilar sings the snot out of it, of course. Love her fearless octave-plus leap to the C's.

Cerquetti: She really owned the C in this outing!

Gencer: I love this voice, and the more unhinged she gets, the more I like it! Imagine the length of that final acuti!!

  • Well, Leyla Gencer is the last one here (singing final aria from Donizetti's Belissario) and just WONDERFUL! Go, listen to it again!

  • Most of Callas' are wobbles[ those -2- here in Armida} and make me seasick but the Callastinains will never admit the smallest flaw.

  • @65attila you are hearing things that aren´t there. heve your brain checked

  • @SiEtIn1

My brain and ears are in much better shape than your manners

you cavone. I learned sometimes it is best to respond in kind as you seem unwilling to discuss the musical opinions I stated.

  • @65attila what about your manners? I give you helpful health advice and you call me a cavone. but yes, my manners sometimes suck: PLEASE have your brain checked

  • @SiEtIn1

You gave me know advice. You were a rude and insolent child who screams

"I don't like you and you''re bad", Very happy I do not know you and if you have children I hope thay are more adult and less rude than you. Your lack of manners is yoour fault not mine- grow up.

    .

  • @65attila lol chill man its YouTube lol. ok how are you so certain that i am not actually a child? for all you know i could be a brilliant 9 yo opera kid entitled to some inmaturity and lack of manners, and you are, like, a cranky grown up arguing with me, wasting precious time you could be using to call your brain doctor to make an appointment ;-D whatever

  • Deutekom is amazing.

  • Callas was truly a miracle.

  • LA MEJOR DEL SIGLO

    LA STUPENDA!!!

  • Who's singing at 5:45?

  • think it is Cristina Deutekom

  • C. Deutekom, for sure.

  • Hi...I'd like to know callas' and sutherland's arias can you help me please?

  • Callas = D'amore al dolce impero from Armida

Sutherland = Nella pace del mesto riposo from Maria Stuarda

The info is in the yellowy box on the right side

  • Callas....sutherland!

  • Callas, Cerquetti and Gencer!

  • homoclassicus, if you know to Rita Streich, ok, otherwise, you will listen her,

  • Do you have Beverly Sills in any of your high notes vids ???

  • As much as i like Leontyne Price and especially in La Forza , i must say that i liked extremely much Joan's long held final note, Edita's enormous finale, Deutekoms is always thrilling, Cerquetti's powerful notes and Maria Callas, although sadly in poor sound, unreachable Armida.

  • Maria Callas as Armida....untouchable....La Primadonna Assoluta del Mondo!

  • u are joking are you? Mado Robin's high note were a whistle of a mosquito, impressive only they were extremely high notes!

  • It doesn't get any more beautiful! Amazin!

  • Wonderful! Who was singing the duet from "The Flying Dutchman"? Who are the singers at 7:50?

  • Anja Silja and Theo Adam under Klemperer (1968). As for the singers at 7:50, they're Pilar Lorengar and Fritz Wunderlich under Kempe (1962). The title of the video has all the information. :-)

  • Is it just me or does June Anderson sound heaps like Joan Sutherland?

  • Comment removed

  • Who's at 8:00

  • Pilar Lorengar

  • God Maria callas here was over human she was great those notes are perfect awesome that last one was out of this world.... i love you callas....

  • Sutherland makes the others sounds like students. Gruberova sounds drunk.

  • Drunk?? "Well, I mean, SURE, i just HATE those who sing with a MUSHY diction that makes her singing slurred and sounds old and tired...I don't know how they had a face to go out and SING like that! Well, at least SUTHERLAND isn't like that. Nope, her diction is always PERFECT, and never sounds DRUNK..."

  • I actually don't agree when you say that Sutherland has a perfect diction, as a matter of fact that's the only thing I don't like in her, her poor diction!

  • Agree! Especially when Sutherland sings in French, can't tell what she sing at all!

  • Can you tell in any other languages at all ? :-)

  • I cant tell what she says even in english but her tecnique was put of this world, the thing here is that sopranos don´t work on the pronunciation as well as tenors or others.

Montserrat Caballé has also that problem, mainly in th french repertory, Montserrat sounds better italian, perhaps beacuse by being spanish she can feel more freely

  • Well, French maybe different, it's more difficult to prononce it clearer in singing.

  • So have you anything useful to say about Sutherland's singing, other than the same old crap that the clueless always spout?

  • Yes, I've said that somewhere else, i praise her voice since i know her singing and it doesn't mean we cannot criticize her diction.

  • She herself dismisses the issue with the admittance of the"mushy diction" and a laugh. I suggest we fans can do the same. With that coloratura and Eb, I don't really mind the diction. Lol if anyone hadn't already try to get hold of some of Joan's English language performances. I could distinguish anything XD

  • I was being SARCASTIC...

  • ohhhhhhhh ok! ehehe

  • The poor lady has FALSE TEETH, do believe

  • I do believe that Frufrucucu is being sarcastic

  • @Frufrucucu I don't think tklogan is referring to Gruberova's diction. She slides in and out of notes like her vocal chords have turned to jello. Her high note is flat. Sutherland makes her sound amateurish, as does Price. I like Gruberova, but this is not her best recording.

  • Callas and Price! My two forever beloved divas!

  • Miss Price has PLENTY of power. Anyone looking for the human voice to overpower a 60+-piece orchestra is looking for the impossible...or, perhaps, they're just looking for something to complain about, which is always far more likely, since CERTAIn so-called 'opera fans' still cannot handle the very simple fact of her innate vocal prowess, even at the age of 81.

  • What is impossible about it? Listen to Brigit Nilsson, Callas, Joan Sutherland recordings (and these are just the folk off the top of my head) and the orchestra isn't giving them any trouble... all about having reserves of power in the range of the singers formant and having a focused tone

  • nothing is impossible when everything is right, the voice, the personal conditions, environment of the performance, these are the rare moments when the work is really interpreted when the role turns to be flesh and blood, "just these"

  • Would be nice to add on the next "Thrilling high notes" the 1951 Aida's 2nd act en in mexico city by madmoiselle Callas. It's seems that she was angry about something or with someone and took her revenge on the stage..!

  • How amazing is Gruberova here?!? Wow. They're all pretty astonishing. I'm not a huge Callas fan and I found her really good here.

  • James King, Birgit Nilsson, Leonie Rysanek and Walter Berry in 'Die Frau ohne Schatten': what an amazing luxury! Incredible voices! Many thanks for posting this! The only one I'm missing is Elena Suliotis in Nabucco.

  • Dimitrova's high notes should be included in this video.

  • Thanks for posting these clips. I must say that the Armida-clip with Maria Callas is the absolute top!

People love her or hate her, I always say. I love her....and please let's not give bad comments on other singers. I think everyone should have fun and listen to whatever artist they like the best!

  • With the Maria Callas (Armida)clip, I was sitting on the edge of my seat!!

She does that to me! Bless her.

  • indeed it is not human to coloraturise so powerfully with the main body of your voice while singing high Ds and E flats This armida is a Miracle in the singing history

  • rincoglionita...mah!

  • First, I just love this idea! Thanks for putting it together, it is tons of fun. Callas and Price are my absolutely favorites here followed by Sutherland and Anderson. I really don't care for some of the others ( Siljla, Jones, Deutekom etc). Anyways, great compilation.

  • You know there are better terms to describe a note besides these insult-like words. Of course, there is no problem in your opinion at all, but it'd certainly be better if you expressed it with more attention to the dedication and legacy of a successful and admirable artist like Leontyne Price, no matter if we like her voice or not.

  • @Homoclassicus AMEN! If piruja (or anyone else) can't do it, just STFU and enjoy it, and don't mock the effort they put into producing this beautiful music.

  • I guess you're one of the people always trying to put Price down, and you know, the only thing that has NO POWER is your arguments.

  • Your agility to type on your keyboard is inversely proportional to your knowledge in opera. I haven't heard anything more stupid than your totally wrong comment. If I were you I'd try to erase it cause your ignorance is embarrassing! LOL

  • True, Price voice on top is very little, here the final Bflat sounds like a little whistle. The best high notes in this selection belongs to Joan Sutherland

  • All the high notes were brilliant. I loved Callas' Armida, and also June Anderson's Semiramide. All are Great!

  • How interesting that you should have thought of doing this! Every cristal glass I have has broken!! Ha Ha!

    Thanks for the experience!

  • I really loved Joan Sutherland's high notes and powerful "coloraturas".I loved Maria Callas' too!

But, all these sopranos are Great!*

    Love them!

Please, dear Homoclassicus, make more of this kind of video!

    Hugs

  • Thanks so much for another video of highs.

Marvelous! Some are new to me. Thanks for including Leontyne, too. One of the visceral appeals of opera is that so few people in all of human history could/can sing such demanding music and without amplification. An opera singer is her or his own acoustic instrument. It's a feat of sorts to perform it with even mediocre results, much less as gloriously as this. Brava!
