  • one of the great travesties that i've noticed in the reproduction-restoration of classic silent film and avant-garde filmworks is the leaching-on of wanabe philip glass clones, ruining the original (anit)aesthetics of the film and the experience of it. i appreciate this sound track more than most. but it super-imposes a musical "interpreation" on to the viewing experience.... i'm tired of this. let it have its silence!

  • It seems psychedelic to me, cool.

  • *!*

  • 1923

  • Still fantastic!

  • I like the music !!!

  • I must admit the music doesn't go with the video. I would like to see the oringinal video. I would I rate this video, well thats a good question.

  • dont listen to this with music

  • thanks 4 posting this materspiece: I saw it just once 20 yrs ago at the Cinema Museum in Turin, anyway it's crazy that someone still now in the XXI century rated it as unapproriate...

  • Goglear Los Mandalas de Kamen

  • i dont like the musique because it's not original

  • I must admit openly that I find this music inadequate, annoying, occasionally too "obvious" - as if written by a Hollywood composer trying to be adventurous. It never works. And it all sounds as if the composer used a cheap Casio keyboard, or something like that. I will venture to say that the composer missed the point.

  • Of course the music doesn't add to the original intention of the artist... but that's irrelevant because it's an experimental movie, it's done by a very talented silent film musician, so the emphasis is on the interplay between audio and visuals. And in that respect, I think it's really successful and beautifully done. Nice work Mr. Sosin :)

  • Love the music! C:

  • Excellent music by composer Donald Sosin.

  • Not a bad film. The music sure is atrocious though.

  • @soluna37 Well, given your stated age of 109 you would probably prefer Victor Herbert or Grieg....sorry you didn't like the track.

  • @silentfilm2

Naturally, taste is not fully determined by age.

For this film I would rather hear: 1. Silence 2. The music of Duchamp 3. Some sparse free improv.

  • I wonder if Manray would call this a dada anti-art film- devoid of symbolic meaning- an exploration of the beauty of the absurd?

  • I doubt this was dada, especially since dada pretty much ended after WWI. Really all this is (for those who 'don't get it') is an EXPERIMENTAL video. It is strictly observing the different techniques of film effects, and experimental music to back it up. They were playing around. Yes, there is no meaning to the video, no subtext. It is what it is.

  • This film was made in 1923-- near the end of the majority of the Dada movement, yes-- but Man Ray was a large contributor. This film especially borrows heavily from Dadaism-- the absurd/meaningless title ("Return to Reason"), which suggests the deconstruction of art itself, is at nearly the heart of Dada ethics. Also-- this film was originally silent, the music was added later by someone unrelated to Man Ray. I personally feel that it severely detracts from the film's original intention.

  • @laurieolywa The original intention being?

  • I DONT GET IT

  • nudity on youtube? i'm shocked

  • this is great, I love it

  • thanks for upload this video.

....its very impressive to see what is possible without photoshop :D or comparable programms.

anyway he wasnt a graffitti painter , no.....lol he wasnt...:)))

  • Mind blowing to think this was created in 1923! The editing makes it look like a fuckin music video. Weird name too..."Man Ray". Sounds like some kind of low brow/graffiti artist. VERY COOL!!

  • Man Ray was born in 1890 in Philadelphia. At first he started making paintings and drawings inspired in the cubism and expressionism. Then he met Marcel Duchamp and his focus changed to the Surrealism and Dadaism. he worked as a photographer and invented the "rayogrammes" pictures that were made without a camera (mind blowing right?!) he also made films and sculptures. He was a great artist, you should google him if you like this video! Take care!

  • wow. They had weird experimental films then as well. (Un chien Andalou is more surreal)

  • un chien andalou always puts a smile on my face

  • Not to sound like a perv, but those are some nice symmetrical breasts! Rest assured they were real in 1923. Anyway, the music fits perfectly with the imagery.

  • @Psopyxsus there's no music in the original version

  • @Psopyxsus They are Kiki de Montparnasse's. She was Ray's lover for most of the decade of 1920.

  • I was watching this is a class and we were all virgins to the movie. The ending was well welcomed. It comes from left field. The turn and turn back. Genius pure Genius.

  • Great little clip. Thanks.

  • This is one of the best silent film scores I've ever heard.
