Either way he calls it he's, which is why 99% of people involved in baseball can't umpire. It looks like he might be safe in slo mo but try looking at that at real speed and make a call then.
...super slow mo and it still looks like he doesn't touch the bag, his toes might have but he didn't land on the bag - in a two man crew in his position you can barely tell, seen some HORRIBLE umpires but thats a toss up call that the parent with a video camera wouldn't be able to make, and putting it on youtube trying to embarrass a guy, that's just pathetic...grow up!
Lets look at the positives. The Kid hustled his way up the line and tagged the correct portion of the base. He also got the run in from third with a ground ball up the middle with less than 2 outs. He did "His Job." It was a hard hit ball directly to the short stop which makes it easy for an umpire to predetermine the outcome of the play.
i love the lack of knowledge on how hard it actuallly is to ump a game. i have been for about 7 years now. and, guess what? try watching 2 different plays at the time, and then seein a BANG-BANG play, when you are out of position from baserunners? NOT EASY. ESPECIALLY when you only have a second to think about it and make your decision. i will admit, we arent perfect at makin calls, but we can still judge it all better than most. and MOST umps can still make a better call than the average person
From my experience as a ball player, there are two things that have never changed. The sun will always come up and umpires will always suck. It's just the way it is, unfortunately.
Stop fucking complaining. I am so sick of people bitching about umps. The ump didnt have the view that we just saw, and he cant just slow down time to see.
The umpire should have advanced closer to the bag... He barely took 2 steps towards the bag. He was far enough to miss the call. Alot of Refs suck these days and its too bad
Umpiring isnt an easy job buddy. I used to rip on umpires all the time. Then I decided to try it myself. Lets just say, I gained a lot more respect for umpires. They can't be perfect
Most umpires are volunteers at this level. They were working with a 2 man crew which placed the field umpire almost 60 ft away at this level of play. "Monday morning quarterbacks" always have the right call. The human element for mistakes and lack of replay challenges are what make baseball pure. The average plate umpire makes close to 200 calls per 6 inning little league game (ball, strike, safe, out, etc) if the umpire misses one call during a game thats still 99% right which is pretty good!
yeah they're all easy in slow motion. Those bang-bang calls are never easy and players need to accept sometimes they're going to disagree with the umps call. Videos like this don't help make good sports.
Here's a bigger issue for me as a coach. Teach your players to run through the bag and that play would not have even been close. Stop lunging. Studies have shown over-and-over that diving into first base and lunging into first base slows you down. Run 70 feet instead of lunging at 60.
@playmkr278 Hey man I just looked at that play again, and thats a close call, yes he could have been closer to the play, but by no means was that an obvious out to the common fan, Yes guys like u and I make and see that call all the time. The best part of the whole clip was one parent/coach says to the kid, great job way to get the run home. Its easy to get caught up in the negativity, Glad one person stayed positive and pointed out the good of that play.
Well one reason, coopsam, is that some of us have been forced out of volunteer umpiring because of leagues going with umpiring organizations. And, from what I have seen in my own son's league, it has meant less quality for more cost. Ours also uses the same ones that do girls softball. Notice that the umpire was out at 2nd with only a runner on third? What for? How many plays come back to third that he can't step over and see it? Way to far away from the play. It's a bad setup.
Foots off the bag right as he catches it. Look at it a couple times. Either way, you're getting pissed about a little league call that i'm guessing didn't make a difference in the outcome of the game. Shocker.
That was a fairly close call....the problem was that the UMP was totally out of position to make that call. With no one on base, what the heck is he doing standing at second?
Sure if you slow it down you can get the right call every time. Umps on the field don't have that option. If it's close ring him up, chances are you're right more often then calling him safe when it's close.
@spooff4life - I disagree with you on this one. The ball was at least a foot away from the glove when the foot hit first base. The super slo-mo is because most of us do not have high quality cameras like MLB networks.
@playmkr278 A foot away in real speed is about .2 seconds.... still think it's obvious..lol I'm just kidding, an umpire adage is "when in doubt call him out" im sure he wasnt 100% sure and just banged em out... better to hear sh it over an out... plus it took 5 minutes off the game..lol Sorry but in games like that, thats how umpires think...
@spooff4life - I am an umpire to spoof and understand your logic. I really am more irritated by the lack of coaching for runners and the rule that has umpires at 2nd under the softball little league rules. I do think though that if you are the umpire watching the play you have to also be aware that most players are going to lunge but I also believe that when it doubt call them out is a bit harsh because the defense only has to get 3 outs while the offense has to score a bunch to be successful.
The funny thing is that when an umpire is getting calls right, no one really notices that he's there. Umpires are human too, and that they don't get every call right is part of the game. Always has been, and I hope it always will be.
the problem was when the runner reached for the bag he step to much on the front part of the bag maybe making the umpire think he hadnt reached the base yet
In fairness to the umpire he was on the right side of the infield and not up the first base line. He should not be moving while making the call. He was a big guy and he was stationary when he made the call. There are umpires that will look for outs but most of the guys try to get the right call.
It was close and a call can go either way. However, the umpire is waayyyy out of position. I can't think of a situation were he'd be where he was positioned. Unless, he's a slow pitch softball umpire. Missing a close one is forgivable, being out of position is not.
he is safe but without the slo mo replay which the umpire does not have the convenience of you could not make that call confidentlyyourself, get off the ump, the call was not that bad, bang bang plays are tough to decide in a split second
you probably aren't ever going to get that call. bang-bang will get called an out 90% of the time. keeps the games moving. umpire wasn't in the best position (should actually be on third base side of the mound with a runner on third), but that's the nature of the 2-man system beast. want better calls? pay for more umps.
in short, quit complaining. if you have to go to slo-mo for a little league game, you're taking it far too seriously.
Cainsk8r said it, give the guy a break. As for the umpires positioning, he was in the right position as long as there was a runner on third, which is inconclusive in this video.
First of all, the ump is 80 years old and is missing his glasses. And second the runner barely touched the bag so I can see how it was missed, although i agree he was safe.
wow, the kid didn't even care about the call and the adults are making videos about how bad the call was. the adults should learn from the kid. he is just having fun
the ump should not have been in that position. he should have been down the first base line. thats y he ran over there after the play cuz he realized he was out of place. wen theres no one on first you stand on the line. not by second. thats were you stand wen theres a man on first
@mbloch44 no. if you listen to the parents, there is a runner on third. he runs back over to third because the runner scores and bases are now empty. pay attention before you try calling someone out.
@shortpeoplecity great point. These adults don't realize that umpiring is a skill that needs to be developed, just like baseball. Everyones out there to learn and have fun, no need to argue with a play as close as that.
2 problems with the umpire's mechanics on this play:
1. He is in the B position. In a 2 man system, he should only be there with a runner on first only. He should be in the A position with no runners on, or in the C position if there is a runner on third (hard to tell if there is or not).
2. He fails to get set. He should not be moving at the moment the play is made.
It's okay to get judgement calls wrong, but at least have proper mechanics.
@bayoubobby In 2 person mechanics, when there is a runner at 1st, the Umpire is in the B position which is between 1st and 2nd on the grass, I'm assuming there was a man on 3rd because he was somewhere near the B, or C position between 2nd and 3rd. Otherwise, I don't know why he was near 2nd base. The video is inconclusive.
yea i mean really i have umpire that level of baseball the games are a joke sometimes and coaches and parents take every game like its game 7 of the world series. do they honestly think i care at all who wins?
good call it was close, and it is a myth that a close play goes to the runner, i have been a ump fro 6 years and alway been told that outs, and strikes are a umps best friend
Problem is there is not enough umps at that level. Usually there are just 2 at the junior high level and sometimes only 1. I did it for 2 years and had 2 games where i was by myself. You had players throwing over to 2nd looking for calls on steals when i am at home plate working the game by myself. How the hell am i supposed to make a bang bang call at 2nd from home plate? Bad call but umps have a tough job..
@hallauthor ....closer means nothing...angle is EVERYTHING....he can be right on top of it, but if his angle is horrible that call will not be accurate. His angle for a play at 1st here is terrible, there is no doubt of that.
@hallauthor Distance is really not the issue It is more important to get a good angle. In a 2 Man crew the Field Umpire should have been in the "A" spot which is in foul territory behind 1st. ball gets hit into play You are supposed to step out to get an angle then STOP moving before the play actually happens at the play. This Umpire was moving at the time that the play actually happened. Hence, the blown Call
umpire in b slot with a runner on third? Never stopped walking while bang bang play is being made...umpire mechanics is questionable.

It's okay to get judgement calls wrong, but at least have proper mechanics.

i umpire at my little league and that was to close of call to be complaining about
JoshBafia 1 year ago
If the umpire was in better position to see the play, he maybe would have made a different call.
bayoubobby 1 year ago
@bayoubobby In 2 person mechanics, when there is a runner at 1st, the Umpire is in the B position which is between 1st and 2nd on the grass, I'm assuming there was a man on 3rd because he was somewhere near the B, or C position between 2nd and 3rd. Otherwise, I don't know why he was near 2nd base. The video is inconclusive.

good call it was close, and it is a myth that a close play goes to the runner, i have been a ump fro 6 years and alway been told that outs, and strikes are a umps best friend
cubsplayre 1 year ago
@theskatekid91 u cant blame the umps u can only

jannecechmanek 1 year ago
The issue here should not be the call so much as why it was missed. Ump wasn't hustling to get closer to the call.
hallauthor 1 year ago 11
@hallauthor
Bad call but umps have a tough job..
dbreiden83080 1 year ago
@hallauthor He shouldn't have to hustle to the ball. He was out of position by a long shot.
IIKeRsEyII 10 months ago
@hallauthor ....closer means nothing...angle is EVERYTHING....he can be right on top of it, but if his angle is horrible that call will not be accurate. His angle for a play at 1st here is terrible, there is no doubt of that.
alasjajo 9 months ago
@hallauthor Distance is really not the issue It is more important to get a good angle. In a 2 Man crew the Field Umpire should have been in the "A" spot which is in foul territory behind 1st. ball gets hit into play You are supposed to step out to get an angle then STOP moving before the play actually happens at the play. This Umpire was moving at the time that the play actually happened. Hence, the blown Call
