The Elohim didn't exactly just pop into existence... They represent the forces of nature -- the laws of physics, if you will - as they understood them. The planets, sun, moon are gods who are the children of the laws of nature. "The deep" would be more accurately "space," or "chaos." The term is sometimes used for the ocean as well. They used to think that space was water, and the earth was like a bubble of land & air floating in it all. This story shows us ancient cosmological thought.
In the original Hebrew, the bible does not say "in the beginning." Also, it doesn't say "God." The term that is translated "God" is "Elohim," which means THE GODS - and it is referring to the Sumerian pantheon of deities. This isn't a Yahweh creation story. Now THAT is interesting, and far more useful in discussing bible than taking it literally.
The King James is not a good choice for this series. It was a bad translation to begin with, and it is in Shakespearean English, which has changed so much you need a course just to understand the difference. Like -- "These are not nice women" means the opposite of what you would think. "Nice," used to mean "prostitute." In the KJV, everywhere is says "against" it actually means "before." There are tons of issues like these. You should try this series using THE OXFORD or JEWISH STUDY BIBLE.

I'm confused about your answer; polls don't indicate that. And the KJV is not the translation that the vast majority of Xtian denominations use. Even the Assembly of God uses the New International Version.

It is not fundamentalists who use this book. In fact about 90% of the rebuttals from christians rely on a KJV verse taken literally. My response to christians has always been for them to read their bible. This series is doing precisely that.

It is really easy to tell what was totally meant as allegory, what was meant symbolically, and which pieces were beginning to mistake earlier writings as literal.

No - that's literalism based on thinking it was written in English. The original Hebrew for "adam" is not a proper name. It would be better translated as "of mud" or "earthling" (earth as in soil, not the planet.) The adam was sexless - like a hermaphrodite, only without any sex organs. When the woman was made, it was from the side (translated as rib) of the adam... this was splitting the first being into a male & a female half.
I still think calling God gay, because it looks like he made men 1st if you limit yourself to an English translation, is a homophobic comment because it is meant as a put down. I confuse nothing. If English was good enough for Jesus, its good enough for you, eh? It was written in Hebrew. Adam is a Hebrew word, and it means it was not a male. So besides using "gay" in a derogatory fashion, you are just plain wrong and spreading incorrect concepts - just like the fundamentalists!

The Elohim didn't exactly just pop into existence... They represent the forces of nature -- the laws of physics, if you will - as they understood them. The planets, sun, moon are gods who are the children of the laws of nature. "The deep" would be more accurately "space," or "chaos." The term is sometimes used for the ocean as well. They used to think that space was water, and the earth was like a bubble of land & air floating in it all. This story shows us ancient cosmological thought.

In the original Hebrew, the bible does not say "in the beginning." Also, it doesn't say "God." The term that is translated "God" is "Elohim," which means THE GODS - and it is referring to the Sumerian pantheon of deities. This isn't a Yahweh creation story. Now THAT is interesting, and far more useful in discussing bible than taking it literally.

The King James is not a good choice for this series. It was a bad translation to begin with, and it is in Shakespearean English, which has changed so much you need a course just to understand the difference. Like -- "These are not nice women" means the opposite of what you would think. "Nice," used to mean "prostitute." In the KJV, everywhere is says "against" it actually means "before." There are tons of issues like these. You should try this series using THE OXFORD or JEWISH STUDY BIBLE.

I think it is great that you are doing this series. Yet, you fall into the trap that fundamentalists do, by taking it all at face value, or literally. Fundamentalists are a very tiny portion of Xtians - and Jews don't take the bible literally -- which is why they put two versions of every story in, so that no one could then take it literally. It is not fundamentalists who use this book. In fact about 90% of the rebuttals from christians rely on a KJV verse taken literally. My response to christians has always been for them to read their bible. This series is doing precisely that.

Here's the problem: If we grant that SOME parts are allegory, how are we to tell which are and which are not? Some stories are blatantly grandiose but others are kind of innocuous. Does ANY of the bible have to be taken literally? See, that's a real problem.

No - that's literalism based on thinking it was written in English. The original Hebrew for "adam" is not a proper name. It would be better translated as "of mud" or "earthling" (earth as in soil, not the planet.) The adam was sexless - like a hermaphrodite, only without any sex organs. When the woman was made, it was from the side (translated as rib) of the adam... this was splitting the first being into a male & a female half.

This video is silly and those people talking know nothing about the Holy Bible. I am an African from Nigeria and black people love God and Jesus Christ. We are a spiritual people. I love the man and woman talking in the video because they are children of God like me. Jesus Christ loves us all. I have to tell the truth, they are deceiving black people with this atheism nonsense. Black people will be doomed if we disobey God's commandments and forsake righteous living.

@BlackAtheistsAmerica The Holy Bible says telling lies is sin and I speak truth. I am here to defend the Holy Bible. The Holy Bible was not written in English. The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew and the New Testament was written in Koine Greek. To understand the Holy Bible you must understand the languages it was written in and the history of when it was written. Try debating a Christian scholar and you will see you know nothing about the Holy Bible.

@IAmaAfricanChristian Actually, most religious scholars are atheists. The bible is full of lies. Does "sin" apply here too? Simply saying, "I speak truth" does not make it true.
I'm aware that the origins of the bible were not in English. However, most christians would argue that the KJV is an accurate depiction of the original texts. Hence, the reason they follow it.
Are you saying that the KJV is inaccurate? Would you argue that over 99.9% of christians do not understand the bible?

@BlackAtheistsAmerica I have a sneaking suspicion that someone is allowing emotion and a false sense of pride (perhaps understandably) instead of reason. Sometimes though, life throws so much at a person that logic and reason are almost impossible. I'm not making excuses, just trying to understand why.
Also, don't let these people tell you this is boring. This shit never gets old. Besides you and Ray make a good team. He sounds funny. I can hear the smiles...lol

You are an angry person who wants to deny the existence of God. Anger can lead to hypertension, heart disease, atherosclerosis, depression, mental illness, obesity, and diabetes. @IAmaAfricanChristian do you realize how much you loose when translating one language to another? so for something to go from ancient hebrew, to greek, to latin, to english...that's THREE language translations! by this time, the true meaning of said scriptures has become lost in translation. example; in the koran, muhammed promised his followers virgins in heaven, but the origin of the word used, "virgin", is syriac in origin, with it's actual meaning being that of "white raisins".

@IAmaAfricanChristian this also shows the fallability of your deity. Why would an omnipotent, omniscient being create the Bible, that could only be understood in one language? A book, that relies on text, in dead langauges, and all we have are copies, of copies, of translations of copies, with no original manuscripts, we dont know who the authors are. Took decades to create the canon we know today, and this was supposed to be designed by an all powerful being?33,000 demominations but were wrong.

First of all how do you know this? secondly, I dont want any blessings from the God of your Bible, it doesn't exist, and even if it did, I would never worship it! The God of the Bible is a Monster, who only cares about 1 tribe. I guess I need to have faith to understand, instead of reading, and study to try a determine whether or not if any of this is true. Once I have faith it will all come to me?

So, a careful reading of the bible will show that the people who originally wrote the passages believed in multiple gods. The idea of a single god was edited into the text later...

I have already built a life filled with peace, love, joy, success, prosperity, and abundance (I am successfully self-employed) - without beseeching supernatural assistance. It is easier for an Atheist to build a good life because his total focus is on the reality before him - and not in the sky.

@ray0991 I use the most powerful method to weight evidence and it is called "The Jesus Christ is the way method." I know that is is too deep for your limited atheist mind to comprehend. When you align yourself with God, all answers will be given unto you. Fact = Jesus Christ is our personal Lord and Saviors. Fiction = atheist philosophy which is false and demonic.
