  • just one thing lads and ladies, do not put any exhaust sealant on any part of the exhaust before the cat as it can get in side and block up the cat, but after the cat its will be fine!

  • dont u love car trouble? exhaust sound of your money in the toilet..

  • as some one that does welding, i got to say that those welds are the worst welds i have seen.

  • @shadow1up hey, they're made in America, all I can say. Strangely enough, the chinese welds are much better.

  • @scottykilmer well i bough a boxing bad stand from everlast and as i was putting it together i couldn't help to notice the bad welds all over.

  • Hi Scotty Have you ever worked with a 2011 4runner? if so please reply

  • @doodlejbhs yes, I work on Toyotas all the time. Many of my customers have em.

  • @scottykilmer Thanks for the Quick response

  • I have a 91 Geo Metro that needs a new cat converter. I just purchased one online for $40 but it needs to be welded on. Can I somehow clamp it on? Also, since it was cheap, will it not work as well?

  • @TheJoeyfishy it should work fine on that old thing, they weren't so complex back then. You could attempt cutting the old one and getting adaptors to bolt the new one on, but really, best to just pay some dude to weld it on.

  • What is the best brand of tools for your money?

  • @zieben64 heck, most are made in china these days anyway. I often just buy duralast tools at auto zone, they come with a lifetime warranty and are three blocks from my shop.

  • hi scotty I was trying to take out the oxygen sensor on the buttom of the cat but it was very hard to come out i use a wd 40 and a wrench and still would not come out. any idea?

  • @Morad4000 yea, pay a mechanic with an impact wrench, they spin em right off.

  • @Morad4000 agreed with scotty, sometimes its cheaper if you take an item in to a family owned tire shop, they'll spin bolts right off if you offer em 20 bucks

  • Hi Scotty,Nice video as always. I have a 1994 s500 benz that I just replaced the original cat with a direct fit (not really a direct fit) eastern catalytic brand. After finally getting it installed the car is louder and the idle is a little rougher. There are no leaks from the cat, but there's something not right. Is there anything from the cat that I can check?

  • @tdsilk nope, if you don't buy an insanely expensive dealer merc cat, they often do that from cheaper design of the aftermarket one.

  • @scottykilmer

    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • my volkswagen golf 2001 gls has been making some odd noises when i exelerate found out today i need to replace my cataytic converter

  • Hi Scotty, I am replacing my broken cat with a Magnaflow cat. It has no bolts, so can I clamp it onto the exhaust pipe? The old one is welded on the engine side, but clamped on the muffler side. It has no oxygen sensor at the cat. Thank you.

  • @shad366 you can try, but normally the are welded on, clamps don't hold that well on them

  • Hey Scotty, I love your videos! So my truck just went from 17 mpg down to 10 and I think it could be one of two things, the O2 sensor is bad, or the catalytic converter is plugged up. I dont know how to Check either. Could you show me? Thanks Scotty.

  • @pb4lyfe23 watch my video "fixing a bad catalytic converter" by typing that in the search engine on my scottykilmer channel main page on youtube. Oxygen sensors are VERY complex, can't check em yourself though.

  • I don't know why but you remind me of Dennis Hopper.

  • how much would it cost for a civic ex 99? i need a new one and the 02 sensor too

  • how to tell on an older car (1990) when do you need to change it out?

  • @sickwititty have the pressure measured before and after the cat, we mechanics have gauges for that. Scotty

  • If I take off my cat will the car run without ecu errors ? or do I still need to have the O2 sensor even without a cat, assuming that it was legal.

  • @Dosalt it will run, but the check engine light will come on as the oxygen sensor data will be bad and the computer will quickly figure that out.

  • @scottykilmer Thanks

  • @scottykilmer so if i have one of the sensors on itll still run? or how do i go about straight-piping the car..?

  • @rookm13 it can still run, but removing the cat is illegal and the computer will know, so often they run poorly and the check engine light will always stay on.

  • hi scotty i have a question, today i went to renew the inspection sticker for my gmc yukon 2001 but didnt passed the inspectionm the guy said something about the computer or something like doesnt read the catalyst and the evap system the scanner said CATALYST not ready EVAP SYSTEM not ready. the battery of my truck was disconnected about 15 days then he said i had to drive the truck around 40 miles .. QUESTION.. what can i do or how to fix the problem if everything is ok & eng light not on?

  • @jhep1985 It's just no reset, so drive it on the highway 40 miles or so, then it should reset itself. disconnecting the battery causes that reset procedure to begin from start, and it can take a while to reset. scotty

  • Should probably mention to check the O2 sensor for leakage, and to not touch the pipe! (You never know who doesn't know!)

  • Scotty do aftermarket catalytic converters work on specific cars like Honda's or Nissan's? I ask because you can find really cheap cats online, but I think I've heard from mechanics that Hondas have to have their OEM style cat in order for it to work on their car. If I could weld, could I just cut a cat off a ford and use it on a Honda?

  • @moofushu often aftermarket ones won't work on late model cars, period. Scotty

  • the trans seems fine, and it doesn't buck when shifting, would another leak in the head gasket cause it or maybe a sensor?? like a crankshaft, map, or trans speed sensor? Maybe i'll do the cat test you show in the video. Last time the dealer worked on it they "updated" the PCM and it the "revhang/delayed shift" got worse.

  • oh yeah...if i manually shift the automatic trans then it wont buck at all and no rev hang/delayed shift

  • got an 2001 grand am 3.4L V6, 175,000miles that bucks A LOT during acceleration. have replaced TPS sensor , 3 coil packs, fuel filter, spark plugs/wires, cleaned mas air flo sensor, trans fluid/filter, air filter and had new head gaskets put on about a year ago. still bucks and has a lot of "rev hang/delayed shift" any thoughts Scotty??

  • @ebrown987 Those babies have really weak automatic transmissions, it could be wearing out. But before you get into the giant expense, have it scanned by a GM expert mechanic with a dealer level scantool, lots of info is hiding in the computer that can show problem areas quickly But seeing your top post, I would assume bad tranny. Scotty

  • thanks scotty, your the best bud.

  • hey scotty, how can you tell if motor mount is bad? and if so, will the motor shake alot? also i can't get my car to rev past 4000 rpms?

  • @ryechidom revving has nothing to do with that. But you put a jack under the engine with a block of wood on the jack, then jack up the engine. If the mount is bad, you will see it separate apart as you jack it up. Scotty

  • hey scotty, got a couple questions for ya. How can you tell when your catalytic converter is going bad? And also underneath my car around my exhaust system i hear a vibrating sound like metal vibrating against each other. The noise is most prominent when i hold my foot on the break and put it in drive. I drive an 89 chysler lebaron btw

  • @SacredBurn0ut cats break two ways, they fall apart like yours inside and rattle, or they clog up and create too much backpressure. For pressure, you measure before and after the cat with a backpressure gauge and drill holes to fit it in. scotty

  • hi Scotty,I have a 2003 Chev. truck, does it still have to be less then 7 years now to get help to replacce it? thanks

  • @elizabethsmith81 yep, 7 years or 70 thousand miles. Scotty

  • Scotty can i use any type of flex pipe for my Mazda mpv 2000 cause i cant find that yr one

  • Thanks scotty! I have got the error code but thanks to your other video I got the error code reader and erased the code however it came back :| I do hear a slight rattle after driving for 30 minutes+ but not sure if it's the cat, any thoughts? Car is a mazda RX8 thanks!

  • @Elektr0House cats do rattle when they break down often, so jack it up and see if revving it up can make it rattle and see if it's the cat. You can also tap it with a hammer when shut off to see if it does. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Thanks man, massive props for how much you help people!

  • i have a 98 camaro and i got the inefficient catalytic converter code. should i replace it imidiatly?

  • @hopeihelped54 No, try cleaning it first as I show in my other video "fixing bad catalytic converter" on my youtube channel. Just go there and type that into the search and that video will pop up. Scotty

  • Hey Scotty i got a po420 code on my 2000 Mazda Mpv

  • Thanks for the video on how to change a catalytic converter. I don't know how hard its going to be to change the catalytic converter but you sure make it look easy. Tanks for making this video for free.

  • how to know when to replace the catalytic converter? thks.

  • @djalex2fou if it clogs up and the engine overheats, it's bad. If it rattles like mad, it's bad. Or if it trips the inefficient cat code it's bad. Scotty

  • how much for that cat??????????

  • @Liamautomechanic prices vary widely, over a thousand bucks at the dealer, 300 bucks aftermarket. Scotty

  • you make this look so easy took me all afternoon to do mine as on my Fiesta the cat ios also the exhaust manifold and yes scrap yards pay for old cats I was greatful been out of work glad theres helpful people like you Scotty please post a video how to set tappits valves Please

  • what do I do when there is leak? the bolts are all tight and the gasket is in good shape.

  • @anttrap321 Then you have to replace the cat if it has holes in it, or get them welded shut by a mechanic. Scotty

  • use a cheater bar to really "BREAK" them lose haha

    hate exhost bolts

  • Scotty I have a question about a tool. How do you use a "Torque Angle Gauge" and why do some modern cars make this tool a must to work on their engines. I don't have a torque angle gauge but, I'm wondering if it is something I should get. Thanks.

  • @moofushu yea, they have torque to yield bolts, meaning they have to be turned so many degrees to finish the tighetening. Heck, make your own using a piece of cardboard with 180 degrees of angles drawn on it so you know how far you've turned it. Scotty

  • hey scotty will changing my exhaust fix catalytic converter problems,,thinking about gettin daul exhaust flowmasters on my 96 chevy caprice,

  • Man scotty... I know you were in the 101st and I was in the Army too but you're crazy about that patch.. It's all good though.... love your videos.

  • Hi, I thought that you can clean Catalytic Converter. Please tell me what cause if Catalytic Converter problem. Tq

  • Hey I've got an 04 accord with 224K miles and a rotten egg smell every time I floor it. Would this be a bad cat? I have 3 cats on my car. Which one would be the bad one most likely? Thank you!!!

  • Is it ok to use the old bolts or should new ones be used?

  • @melvin77055 as long as the threads are good, use em over after spraying some more penetrating oil on them. Scotty

  • Nice

  • this was clearly on a southern car. because i have never been able to get the bolt that hold the exhaust out that easily. I usually have to cut them. especially the 02 sensor they always fight me all the way to the last thread.

  • The old cats contain platinum. My buddy melts them down and extracts the platinum = money

  • The laque thinner method didn't work ?

  • @michaelovitch sometimes you can clean em, sometimes you have to buy new ones cause they're too far gone. Scotty

  • heya Scotty this may be a dumb question but do you know if there are any California Smog regulations that goes against changing your own catalytic converter? I heard some rumors that they even write down serial numbers or such on installed catalytic converters during smog testings

  • @101lol don't know about the land of gold, but here in Texas anyone can bolt a new one on.Contact your local DMV and ask them. Scotty

  • How did you know the cat needed to be replaced?

  • @joe1951 It was tripping the inefficent cat code on this vehicle, and you can also do various tests as I show in my video "How to check out your catalytic converter." Scotty

  • i own a 2001 chevy venture and i use my OBD II reader which reads P1404(EGR Valve Closed Position Signal Range/Performance), could you please enlighten me about this problem or make a video. Thank you!

  • @managuille Take the EGR valve off and clean it and the holes under it feeding it gases. If that doesn't work, replace the valve. Scotty

  • You make it look so easy Scotty. Whenever I have to replace Cats the bolts never wanna break loose and I end up spending hours sometimes trying to think of the best ways to crack them loose (or cut the off altogether.)

  • hey skotty i have a 2003 isuzu rodeo with 93,000 miles on it and i recently got the oil changed and now when i start it up i get a big cloud of white smoke that lingers for a few min and then when i stop at a stop light or a stop sign and take off again it spits out some more white smoke,, what could be the problem and how much is it going to take

  • @facelessgirl09 White exhaust smoke (steam) is water in a combustion chamber. This condition is normally caused by a leaking head gasket, warped head, cracked head, cracked block or a combination of the listed causes.

  • @facelessgirl09 generally that's a blowing head gasket, watch my video "how to find out if your head gasket is blown" and do that test. Scotty

  • Scotty, I got a 89 GMC Siera 4x4 4.3 5sp. When you are going down the road, and let off the gas you here a clunk from the back of the truck, and when you are turning in reverse it also makes a noise, Would you say its probly u joints?

  • @fordwillkillyou Check them for play first, and PRAY it's not the rear end going out. Scotty

  • My truck don't have one and it runs better without it. Yes I'm breaking the law big deal I still pass emissions and the flowmaster sounds better.

  • damn i wish bolts were that easy to come off where im from....lmao

  • I thought you were able to fix them either using lacquer thinner or using detergent. I recall you have a video on it. Does that not work all the time? On Honda, the OEM converter costs in excess of $600. I was hoping that P0420 does not have to imply replacement of the converter.

  • @vgs8606 Of course it doesn't work all the time, sometimes they break physically and sometimes they are just too clogged up. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

I presume you still advice to try the other approaches before deciding to buy the new catalytic

converter? Generally, what has been success rate with the cleaning for you?

  • @vgs8606 You never know if cleaning will work or not. of course removing the cat and cleaning it in a bucket works best, but that's a lot of work. Scotty

  • @Michiganborn1969 Joe, just cut a dealer with the muffler/exhaust shop in advance. You'll do the work, they will inspect it and sign off on the paperwork. Or move to Oregaon!

  • wow, Looks like a simple enough job but I don't think I can leaglly do this as a DIY job here in California because the catalitic converters serial # has to be registered with the state to match the VIN# of the vehicle. It would have to be done at a certified shop with the DMV that has to register any new cats installed on a car/truck. Couldn't we just use the lacker thinner trick that you used in a previous video?

  • My question would be is caster important or not ? They said as long as my caster was the same on both sides that wouldnt do anything to my tires...

  • @1ownjoo2 that's alignment adjustments. Many vehicles are different, you have to go by the alignment figures for your vehicle. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

Mm yea i know but is caster important for Grand Cherokee or not ? My Camber was -.4 both sides which was within spec. The Toe was .20 one side and .15 another side which was close but in spec. The reason im asking is because when i changed my Viscous coupler myself in my Transfercase i got an alignment after to make sure it wasnt that and my VC causing my outer wheels to wear out in the front. They said i didnt need an alignment. What does Caster do if its off by 1 degree

  • @1ownjoo2 one degree is enough to make the tires wear unevenly. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

For caster ? Because i thought caster controlled how the wheels returned to center or something, everything i reado nline says it doesnt affect tire wear. Thats why im asking if you know or not

  • @1ownjoo2 You don't believe me, fine. I'm just telling you that it will wear the tires incorrectly. MAN, believe who you want to believe. Scotty

  • Hey scotty i have a question about wheel aligments. I had my alignment checked after i replaced my bad viscous coupler because i wanted to make sure it wasnt a combo of both wearing the outside of my front tires. The shop said my Caster was 5.7 both side, and are suppose to be 6.5-7.5, The camber was -0.4 both side (within spec) and the Toe was .20 left and .15 right, and the spec for my Jeep is suppose to be between 0 and .22. They said i didnt need an alignment and caster isnt important

  • Its rare that they come off without breaking. My suggestion is to heat the nuts and bolts up with a torch, easy as pie after that.

  • pretty hard to film under there eh?

  • Scotty is the best!

  • i had this replaced on my impala, two months later it went bad, why? smelled like eggs.

  • @MrRichierich1990 egg smell is sulfur, generally from bad gasoline with a lot of sulfur in it. Scotty

  • It looks like this replacement was new. I have heard that a non professional can't buy old catalytic converters from a junk yard. Is it because junk dealers take them off and sell them for the base metals inside? I have welding skills and a torch. Can I buy a generic cat and then weld it into place? If I were to find a used cat, is there a way to tell if it is still good?

  • @spelunkerd Yes, you can weld them in, but I wouldn't try a used cat, no way to test em. Scotty

  • i wish changing this part was this fast.

  • are the 80 dollar universal catalytic converts worth buying?

  • @jhnvallejo on older cars they are OK, but on newer ones, they often don't work with the software and the check engine light comes on. Scotty

  • Scotty, I was just on your website. After reading, It made me wanna move to Houston. I didn't know that you would help anyone to fix their car... FOR FREE! I wish you live here in California so I can pay you a visit and teach me how to fix all my car problems.

  • that looks something i can do

  • On the east coast due to road salt those bolts would be so rusty you'd never get them off by hand.

In most cases I need to use my big red wrench (oxy / acetylene torch) and an impact wrench.

Sometimes even that's not good enough and I need to cut the bolts off and replace them.

  • @Bushougoma Ah, but I live in Texas, and things don't rust much here. I grew up in Niagara Falls, but they didn't have cats on cars waay back then. Scotty

  • SCOTTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Scotty if your car failed an emissions test would it help pass if you drilled one or two small holes right after the cat? I ask because I once saw a car that I think should have failed an emissions test but passed and it only dawned on me that the exhaust was rusted and may have had holes in it.

  • @moofushu No, don't go drilling holes, that just makes them leak gas vapors into the car. Scotty

  • C'mon Scotty, you forgot to remove the piston rings first, now the Exhaust won't hold onto the Crankshaft like its supposed too. Man, that kind of mistake is like putting Radiator fluid into your Radiator.. it just doesn't make sense.

  • @sacr3 No silly comments allowed here. Scotty

  • Its not even possible to do that here in western NY. the bolts are so rusted with the rest of the exhaust that the threads disintegrate. Gotta cut and weld/clamp.

  • @3wheeler016 I know, I grew up there myself, that's why I live in Texas now. Scotty

  • You should maybe put continuity Grease on the o2 sensor wires.

  • @MrMrtiki not necessary

  • @sacr3 just thinking so moisture don`t get in contacts

  • I wish he was my friend.

  • Scotty, did you install it with the packing slip still taped on?

  • @mikeisgonzo No, I cut that off camera. Scotty

  • Hey Scotty how much can u get for a old catalytic convertor i have 2 laying around in my garage?

  • @Bret3030 different prices for different sizes, call some metal salvage stores. Scotty

  • awesome please make one on changing an ac compressor

  • @rarriz agree

  • I heard you are not supposed to reuse the exhaust flange bolts. Is there any validity to this? alldatapro marks them as specifically non reusable.

  • @americantractors Depends on how bad they're rusted. You can put the old ones back on, but the next time the exhaust needs repairing/replacing it'll be a hell of a job getting those rusted bolts off.

  • @americantractors That's B.S. You can reuse anything that's not damaged. Scotty

  • Those O2 sensors can be a bastard to get off, especially if they've been on for years. It's very east to break them off by accident, where then you'll need a drill and tap & die set...

  • Scotty is my HERO!

  • Scotty hair style for the win!!

  • my old car had this problem instead i scrapped it as it would cost more than what i paid for it

  • SCOTTY IS A BOSS!!!

  • NICE VIDEO, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK,,,,SCOTTY IS # 1.

  • What exactly happens when you don't run a catalytic converter? I heard that some people will see performance increases, while others will loose performance do to inefficient back pressure?

  • @Sypthv8 yea....depends on the car usually the newer ones will lose performance while older cars (90's) will gain from it but be careful its illegal 2 run a car without 1

  • @Sypthv8 your car loses power and it starts to sound like a boy racer's car as my old car when it was a car it's cat converter went and needed a new head gasket job (skimming the head the lot) more or less my old car's engine was shot had no option but to have it scrapped and crushed

  • @Sypthv8 one, you're breaking the law. And two, the computer is designed to use it, so if you remove it, vehicles often run worse. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer mmm well i have one in my car because i only have one o2 sensor in the entire exhaust system which is on the headers, before the cat, so in this case, it will enhance performance right?

  • Yeah, here in Ontario, Canada we get about $50 to $150 for catalytic converters at the scrap yards. The price depends on what kind of material is inside it, and sometimes what kind of car it came off of.

  • Scotty Kimer = A boss!

  • @yosh6278 *king

  • @yosh6278 No he is THE BOSS !
