@allater3 I have pictures of my great grandfather and grandfather racing 1910-1920s Harleys on dirt oval tracks and my grandfather hill climbing on various rigid framed Harleys mostly modified WW2 WLAs LONG before Honda, Suzuki Yamaha Harley was riding in the dirt. And harley XR750s owned the tracks for a long time.

18 inches, you say? No, try 12. And you'd be shocked at what you can do with 3 inches in the back. I've seen videos of the USGP MX races at Carlsbad in the early '70s when 3" was the norm, and then again in the early '80s when 12 was the norm. The speed at which those guys assaulted the track didn't really seem to change. I'm sure it did, if you look at lap times, but it wasn't that big of a deal. So long as you're willing to get your ass off the seat, any short-travel bike can haul ass.
