The history of this march is well known. The original composition was quite short; like the marches were at that time. So it was lengthened in 19th century by a finnish composer and military conductor Lauri Hämäläinen.
He added an old finnish folk song in the middle of this march. So actually it is a composition of two pieces. The added part is between 1:18 and 1:44.
@gersman1962 It's a march of Finnish Cavalry Regiment "Hakkapeliittas". They fought under the swedish flag in 30 years war. So basically it's finnish, but in theory it's swedish.
Btw, that regiment was the same for Sweden's king what Waffen SS was for Hitler. Super special troops who won every battle they fought.
Who gives a shit who, when and why, but I have always been proud descend of hakkapelitas who fought in 30 year war along with swedes and after that we fought our own wars. Without Swedes we wouldn't have so much spirit as we proudly presented in WW2 against russia.
And by the way word Hakkapelita comes from Finnish words "hakkaa päälle" what was their warcry.
@Winnie9212 das kann ich bestätigen, war unser batallionsmarsch beim panzeraufklärungsbtl.7 (aufgelöst), wenn man finnische sagte, war man dort ungehalten!
@Winnie9212 Despite the German title it is among the world's most famous cavalry marches. Years ago I was in the Canadian Army and this was one of the most loved marches in the vast repertoire of our regimental band. :)
@SantaFe19484 This march celebrates the Finnish cavalry in Thirty Years War when they fought in Germany. The composer is also unknown and could even have been German. The march itself is also quite widely known in Germany so it is quite fitting to refer to its German name in an international context. Finnish name would be "Suomalaisen ratsuväen marssi kolmikymmenvuotisessa sodassa".
I suppose crowds everywhere can be ill mannered when attending a musical event like this one. I had to search everywhere for a rendition of "The Radetzky" march without the obfuscation of clapping along. I saw/heard The Marine Band, The Presidents Own and during the last number, "The Stars and Stripes Forever"... sure enough.....clapping. I wanted to throttle them. When I attend a concert I want to hear ALL the music, unpolluted by clods in the audience who don't know enough to be quiet.
Yeah but that aint the worst! For example, in some red army orchestra music videos where they are performing stuff like kalinka with leningrad cowboys, some asshole starts to whistle by music all of a sudden!
@drum3433 Was sweden then, and had been for about 550 years already also called the east sweden way back already, it captured the spirit of a great military power, the one with control of baltic. Sweden/Finland
It's a live recording, so is the audience supposed to sit there like in church without sound? I'm sure the one who is interested enough can find a studio version without disturbance.
I was there in attendance and I very much enjoyed listening to the Hakkapeliittain marssi. Hyvää Suomi ja Pohjola! Excuse my Finnish, I'm Norwegian myself.
Are you ABSOLUTELY sure you know better than a FINNISH military band what's the right (original) way to play a FINNISH march? =)
NOTE: The name of that march - even in Germany - is "Marsch Der FINNLÄNDISCHEN Reiterei (aus dem 30-jährigen Krieg)", or "FINNLÄNDISCHEN Reiter-Marsch". =)
Thus, wouldn't you consider it a "little bit" COMICAL, if a Finn (or any other foreigner) claimed e.g. Musikkorps der Bundeswehr playing e.g. "Preußens Gloria" or "Wacht am Rhein" the wrong way...? ;-)
Just thought of something. Its now 200 years since Sweden and Finland split apart. All the gratitude to the brave finnish soldiers who fought and died with the soldiers of Sweden against the great enemy (Russia). May we always be friends and brothers.
Hehheh. Dress uniforms are always a bit "ladylike". They are DRESS uniforms, after all. And here specifically the band uniforms. I've seen worse. As for combat uniforms, wiki for M05.
I'm proud to be Finnish and proud of my ancestor William Philp who was Scottish mercenary in Swedish army, a very high-ranking officer who later moved to Sweden and then to Finland.
Ja, genau. Hakkapeliitta kam vom Finnischen uralten Kriegschrei "Hakkaa päälle" also ungefähr "Hau drauf".
Not to mention, that we still are screaming that in our modern army..."Hakkaa päälle pohjan poika", where pohjan poika means literally Son of the North. Oh yeah, those were the times...deep up to your balls in snow, and then attacking enemy positions screaming that...pissed off back then , but now 20 years later..wow, that was time!
didn't make it, got kicked out and sent to Signalling regiment (viestirykmentti) with II/09, guess I'll just have to sign in for regular personel after mandatory service and come up with plans for getting ordered to Armoured Brigade, I loved that brigade.
Beatiful. Sounds good in Finnish also.
