Since 1990, when I bought for my niece, "Oscar Wilde Stories for Children" because of your illustrations ( and Oscar!), I have been inspired by your work. Your work is reminiscent of A. Rackham and others, and now I hope to follow in these illustrious (!) footsteps - having been a mediocre fine artist, I now am studying Graphic Design because I have always wanted to be an illustrator. Thank you for inspiring me and sharing your technique. Kathleen Dougherty
I am going on in September to study Illustration, so thank you for the opportunity to see an illustrator in action. I much the more traditional methods. I prefer to work in black fineliners. Thanks again!
@pjlynch1 Thank you for looking at my animation and giving it praise. I've been experimenting with origami and recently made a origami harpy video showing an origami harpy of my own design but animation is my first love! Thanks again!
Was shown this in my illustration class at college. Have to say this really inspired me to practice painting (was only focusing on digital work before).
Your watercolor illustrations are sensitive and beautiful! If I ever color my animations I would want to have watercolor backrounds with your kind of depth of color. Maybe you would like to see my hand drawn animated video,Magic Arrows that I made and is on my channel page on you tube. It has a dragon in it! Thanks for explaining your painting process!
Wow! You are quite an inspiration sir! :D I absolutely love this painting of yours of a dragon. It is just amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this video on how you did it! It's been enormously educational for me. Thank you thank you!! :D :D :D
heya pj! Ive just started to watercolor and paint again and your work has been a big inspiration! My favorite book you have illustrated is "Ignis". Its still my favorite children's book today. i am most fascinated on your watercolor and i would like to learn more. Keep up the great work!
how did you manage to tranfer the sketch on to watercolour board? is what i see some semi-transparent paper? chercoal paper? the result would then be mirrored or?
i saw part 1&2. amazing work! i always was interested in water colors to paint with. im writing my own story and this gave my an idea in which direction to go to. i was initially going to make it into a graphic novel. but maybe i can merge this style of story-telling and my own. thank you so much!
i only can do the initial sketch and only that, i wish i could learn how to color thmy drawings, theyre just so lifeless without colors and shadings, cuz id unno how to, can u give me some advice?
too many videos of how to... this is one of the best for me, many usefull tips, and a great talent display, this is what you tube is good for, theaching good things and not stupid things.. thanks for taking the job..
I recently found a way to skip all that hard work. I bought an Epson 1290 A3 printer. This takes moderately thick watercolour paper, up to A3+ size( a little bigger than A3).So now I scan or photograph my roughs, manipulate them in the computer and then print out directly onto the watercolour paper. The ink runs a little so be sure to let it dry and don't make it too dark.
Thanks for the nice comments and very good luck with your Illustration. The dancing is great too. Did you know that my nephew Caolan is a world champion?

PJ, "East o the Sun, West o the Moon" was one of my absolute favorites as a kid. It has always influenced me as an artist and ultimately made me come to the realization that illustration is what I really want to do. Thank you.
Also, I'm wondering what method you use to transfer your drawings? For me this is always the most horrible, mundane part and if you have some less horrible way to go about it, that would be amazing!
You are definitely my favourite Illustrator. I am from Germany and first came across one of your books on a trip to Ireland. Ignis is still my favourite. I even painted him on the wall of my daughters room but I love your other books, too. Thank you so much for your wonderful illustrations and for putting the 'making of' on youtube. I've always wondered how you do it.
Mr. Lynch, I've been rather curious about something. What kind of paper do you use for your watercolor works? I can't say I've seen paper like that, it almost looks like a sheet of leather from it's thickness and it seems to hold water rather well.
In the meantime though, I can't wait to see more videos and books with your artwork in them!
I love your stuff. I've been collecting your books since I was 7. Granted, thats only ten years ago, but it is still thrilling to see this. It's certainly very helpful, especially for me to learn how to paint. Thank you so much for posting this. You cannot realise how much this will help me with my latest project. Thanks so much. :)
