I won't comment on whether he was retarded or not, but forgetting to doublecheck the machinery he was piloting is kind of.. Well, stupid, and especially for a Thunderbird of his status.
He had forgotten to consider the MSL (mean-sea-level) altitude of location at which he took off from. He needs around close to 800 meters in altitude to perform a split s such as the one he was attempting, and as far as I can see, he was only close to 500.
Nevertheless, the presence of mind to eject was mental.
First off, this guy is/was a Thunderbird, which means he had a LOT of flight hours under his belt. Second, the F16 is completely fly-by-wire, meaning that if its electronics systems go down, it is unflyable. So I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that he was a "bad pilot." Especially since he had the presence of mind to eject right before the plane slammed into the ground at well over 100mph.
thats a clearly pilots error, he made it too low in a perfect visibility and all weather conditions, no excuse really, everyone could see its too low. a professional pilot like that cant rely on altimeter only
Aerobatic pilots set there altimeters to show the absolute altitude of the field there at. This guy had his set for the wrong altitude. At least that's what my professor told me.
The problem here was that his altimeter was set wrong. He was trying to put a standard split-S and come out of it just above the ground ( 200-150 ft) but his altimeter was not set to take into account the altitude above see level. usually not a problem since pilots don't use that altimeter so much, but here the pilot looks bad even though it was a techs fault!
It was an incorrect altimeter setting that lead to this. From the cockpit, it appeared to him that he was actually higher but in fact, the aircraft was actually lower then what the altimeter read.
nolifemerc: even a person with no jumps could see his altitude is not enough. And he obviously was aware of situation, otherwise wouldn't ejected himself before the crash.
You dudes saying he's an idiot and american and so on.. You are the idiots.. This is a very hard maneuver to pull off. A single miscalculation and it ends like in the video.. And of course he is showing off ... It's an airshow.
This is what happend: The airshow was in Mountain Home Idaho. The Thunderbirds train in Las Vegas. The pilot set his altitude indicator to the initial altitude of the runway at Nellis (Vegas). The pilot started the manuever at too low of an altitude and he realized it when he was already heading for the ground. I was there...giving tours in the AWACS when one of our crew members told me it crashed...I was in complete disbelief.
@Frankcar11 he made wrong calculations still people need to stop saying he was a bad pilot he just made a mistake and unfortunately for him it was one that let him crash
He's american, but he's also human and humans make mistakes. Rodney got it right, he was used to practicing this maneuver at sea level but he realized he made a mistake and veered the aircraft away from the crowd and punched out. Last I heard, he had a desk job at the pentagon.
kinda true though, he was used to practicing the manouvre somewhere else, which was closer to sea level, and he just forgot how high up the ground was. so really it's a case of stupid american hahahah. not a general comment mind, but this particular american did a very stupid thing.

pilots are trained ever not to panic. cause if you panicked - you're dead.
