@jjp009 Musically, yes! But startlingly intelligent and articulate with very well adjusted kids. Check out his interviews, specifically on Crossfire and a multi part series when he addressed the senate committee on censorship in opposition to the PMRC.
FZ did not have his voice lowered by 3 octaves nor anything like 3 octaves! Most humans are lucky if they possess a 3 and a half octave range and that's at the extremes.Frank did have his range lowered by the attack on him(some brainless twat jumped on stage,in London I think, and pushed him off) but it would have been less than an octaves difference. By the way, you can see him on the back cover of Waka/Jawaka still in his wheelchair!
@terrypussypower How on earth was his voice lowered by that incident? I think he lowered it purposly because it made him sound cooler. I am not a factbook though, so please tell me how his voice got lowered from falling off the stage
@superkulmedkniv25 Well now, before I go any further, if FZ lowered his voice purposely "to sound cooler"(whatever the fuck that means), why did he wait until 1971 and 10 albums in, to do it? Anyway, if Zappa was any "cooler" he'd be frozen solid! But to answer your question, in the aforesaid 'incident', Zappa fell 15 feet into an orchestra pit breaking his leg and crushing his larynx, resulting in his voice being a third of an octave lower. Read "The Real Frank Zappa Book" for more info.
I wished there was more here. I read the rest of the interview in a magazine. Right after this, he says a fellow veteran (in the audience) started crying in the front row and they stopped the show right there.
@micmore007a No he didn't, he thought it would be funny, but no one laughed. He didn't, he hated those who commanded them to do what they do. They were drunk Marines, and would have never done it if they weren't. He knew this and thought the audience would laugh, but they didn't.
Could you imagine a incident like this causing such a fuss today? I mean, Frank had to explain what went on with the marines and the doll for decades! Perhaps it was shocking in the 60´s because of the Vietnam war going on, but 20 years later? That´s just as stupid as those people who know Frank as "the funny guy on the toilet".
Frank is the coolest motherfucker!

Zappa didn't do drugs and neither did anyone employed by him while on the clock. You cold learn a lot from him if you open up a little.

@anastyschoolboy Fair enough. Gotta admit...he was a little strange, wasn't he?

@BMayhew60 Yeah, it doesn't sound like him b/c this was before he fell a stage and busted his ribs, lowering his voice by 3 octaves.

One fine example of a thing that happens on stage that you don't necessarily support.

He looks pretty disgusted when he talks about the doll. It would be interesting to see that performance.

You're right ganjaganja879! The clip that followed this interview is «Set the controls for the heart of the sun» from Pink Floyd. Good ear!
