I went there two different times with two other friends, so three of us total. The first time two of us heard footsteps crunching the leaves on the ground outside while we were walking through the hallway on the inside. The second time we went, we explored a different building. When walking from room to room, once again only two of us of the three heard something. This time it was mumbling which sounded like was coming from outside. We looked outside and nobody was there. Coincidental?
I've been to quite a few state hospitals and Central State was by far the worst. It was literally a warehouse. My first visit was around 1987. People literally were strewn about the halls. It was poorly administrated and the staff didn't deserve the abuse from the media and general public. They did a heck of a job with little to no resources. There is just as much story in the compassion of the staff than there is in the horror of being a patient. I hate that its become a curiosity.
Interesting video, but it needs a good, factual narration not sappy music. My ancestor resided here in the 1870s. He died in 1876. From abuse? Good question. Was he dumped in an unmarked grave? Another good question. Patients there at that time were treated like animals. It's whole history is a history of monsterous treatment of the mentally ill and a legacy of society's general view that the metally ill are beasts, not worthy of compassion.
you're absolutely right. when i first made this video i didn't know anything about central state, or it's history. i chose music that would allow the viewer to come up with their own inner dialogue. since that video was made i've visited CSH 10+ times and have compiled a binder full of info, stories, and incrementing evidence....some of it's i've posted on my flickr account, and the rest of it i'm just waiting for the right time/way to share it.
The tour only goes through the Indiana Medical History Museum which is on the grounds of Central State. Tours are a $5 donation and only occur during the day. Being on the property is trespassing unless you are going through the museum and the Indiana State Motor Pool is housed on the grounds as well. I work at the museum as a tour guide.....paranormal groups ARE NOT allowed in the museum to do investigations and if they have been in there, then someone has broken in.

We need to reopen places like this! The good ol days when we could get rid of freaks and let doctors do and test as they wanted. They now just let these idiots out and have come up with all kids of new, lame, words, like mentally challenged instead of insane or retarded.
No, it's little pussy liberals like you that think that everyone is sane and can fit into society. Think of the hundreds of places like this that are now closed. Where are those patients now? OUT IN PUBLIC BEING A MENACE TO NORMAL PEOPLE!
@arthurkitchen your an idiot, want to know something Reagen did bad for the country that ties into this? he set forth several cutbacks especially in california that led to closing many mental hospitals and released hundreds of patients to the streets. So how bout you find a real source to blame for an argument other then "liberals" everytime
thank you for your kind words...mental illness has had a white knuckle grip on my family, but my sister and i are trying to break that cycle! some days are easier than others...
Just curious is it still really hard to get into this place without getting caught? I was there about a week ago and was planning on making another trip here soon but I was just wondering if anybody knew if getting caught was a big thing to be worried about?
Ive recently gotten interested about the asylums and all the things that went on in them, its sad that people can consider others lower then them and put punishment on them as if to reinforce some self couinciess thing. The asylums made more mentaly insane people then it cured because of all the corruption and abuse. Those were just my thoughts of it, i think we can all agree that it is appauling and sad what happened to the paitents.
This place was originally intended to be a "Garden of Eden" for the mentally ill. The grounds were almost completely forested. Lush flower gardens were planted. The idea was that patients could be isolated from the stresses of modern society and their minds could heal in a peaceful environment. Unfortunately, the place fell into the hands of those who had no respect for this idea. The forests and gardens were cut. The hospital ultimately became a "storage facility" for the insane.
not only was it a storage facility, but major pharmaceutical companies conducted testing on the mental patients...and many of their bodys were disposed of on unmarked graves thru out the property..
I understand that this was one of your first videos. I think the most important thing you could take from this would be to put more time into your musical selection. No offense, I'm not sure what was available to you, but this music was a horrible selection and does not fit the vibe in any way shape or form... this was a dark place not a happy place, and you have a low quality version of looped wedding montage music. I muted it and enjoyed the video much more.
growing up with mental illness in my family had robbed me of my childhood, so visiting this place for the first time had a profound affect on me, i had chosen the instrumental version of REM's "everybody hurts" becuz of what i had personally been thru, and what the lyrics meant to me, but i understand how an outsider might have very different thoughts and feelings when viewing this...so there was no offense taken....thank you for taking time to view it....
yeah. alot of this footage was shot during my first trip there...and i took lots of pictures from inside the old powerhouse...i've since been back 9 times and have video from inside patient rooms, and the tunnels......
Just some old boiler rooms, an old electric plant, the basement of a large building with a plumbing station, electrical control room, sewage control, steam plant, maintainance area, and etc. What was the TRAGIC part? Dumping patients onto "the streets" / "the city". TODAY - the police horses are kept there (mounted patrol), they have some VA substadized "rent controlled" apartments for our bravest vets, a museam & teaching post from Indiana University. VERY GOOD "GREEN SPACE" 4 INDIANAPOLIS!
i couldn't agree with you more! this was the very first video i had ever made after my first visit to the facility a year ago..i have learned so much since then about photography, and the monstrosites that went on within those walls...i've only really scratched the surface....
haha yeah watch out for "gangsters" too, a hummer full of dudes got out and started after us once while we were going here and we just ran inside and they didnt follow. Also ran into a group of def ghost hunters that showed us around...quite strange.
there's a firefighter convention or something going on over there this week, and i think next week also...so needless to say now wouldn't be a good time to try and get in undetected.
how do you get inside? i've lived about a mile away from there and have always dreamed of seeing the inside of it, but i know the police keep their horses there and patrol the area.
i agree with stehphyn, i went there the other day, got the tours of the museum and dead house. then i went snooping, stumbled upon an impd car, got permission to go inside. the evans and baer buildings are still livable and structurally sound. the dumb asses in charge in IN would rather put ppl in jail than help them. helping cost money, locking up gets the state money. the only thing to be afraid of there is the live bums that live there. always find the cop and ask before u snoop.
yeah, i have this REM tribute CD that was transposed for a violin quartet....i bought it for 2 bucks on a clearance rack at "half price books"....it has "shiny happy people" and "the one i love" and many other well known REM songs....it was the best 2 bucks i ever spent....
During a tour of one of the hospital wards, the group passed a room where a man was lying on a bed with a peanut balanced on the end of his erect penis. One of the new interns asked the head doctor what was wrong with this patient. The doctor replied, "he's fucking nuts".
The entire System from The National Institute down is a farce- I have lived as a hermit for years because of mockery, slander, judging, stigma and ignorance- I have come to believe most so called "mentally ill" are gifted and are too sensitive for this ruthless world- no, I am not delusional- my own family has abandoned me- they just wont talk about it-google "hauntings in Anoka"

no, many of the patients were relocated into various nursing homes after the facility was closed by the state after loosing their battle with allegations of patient abuse and also due to controversy over funding.....
and lastely, i'm not sure so about central state being a traditional hospital like you were saying...i've never read anything about that....it was a facility to treat the mentally disabled, depression, schizophrenia, the criminally insane, but i've read nothing about it being used for hospice....
since going into the powerhouse, i've also gotten into the admin building, the evans building, and the bahr building....and i must say, the powerhouse definately had a heavy feeling about it.....and there was an uneasiness i felt inside the bahr building...
i've never been at nite either, and i totally agree, that you must be respectful at all times when on the property....i was able to find my way to the tunnels by myself which ultimately led me inside a few buildings, and yes there are cops everywhere so you do so at your own risk....i've been back about 4 times since and have so much video i need to go thru..but haven't had the time....recently i was inside the bahr building, which was built to contain the criminally insane, talk about creepy!
Also I would like to add that you need to be respectful of anyone or thing on this property people have died here. I would never go there at night. I feel like something always lures me to the old power plant.
How were you able to get footage? There are always cops everywhere in there. All the buildings are locked except for the boiler room bldg. Just wondering. You can't get into the tunnels unless you know someone who will let you in down there.
I have been wanting to get in to take photos but I want permission from the company who owns it so I can have written permission, I do believe there are spirits there. I fell something heavy when I am by the guard shack thing when entering, I had my truck door shut by itself. When I was in the medical history museum I had something go up my back by the autopsy room. The one thing that worries me I have seen a black shadow go into the old power plant. And this was during the day.
Alot of people don't realize this was a hospital for the insane but later it was used as a fully functional hospital. My dad's friend said that he was there in one of those alcoholic treatment for 30 days. I think it was used as a hospice. They turned it into a hospital when other facilities in other counties were being constructed. When it was an insane asylum it was best research facility for syphilis plus the best medical museum in the nation. You will have to go there and take a tour
i totally believe you..i had some experiences myself that if it hadn't happened to me, i wouldn't have believed it...that place has such a negative energy surrounding it...and no wonder...it was originally a sacred burial groud for the miami shamans indianas...and they just built central state right on top of it...
I went there on Friday and i got kicked by somehting...I went inside the tunnels and heard a guy saying somehting and it was only me adn my friend..so i took a picture and in it was a guy but no one wasn't in there...than i heard a guy yelling, a girl laughing adn a kid crying, it scared me to death b.c i saw alot of things there and no one wasn't there but my friends....
You really did a great job of getting some clear footage both inside and out. Terrific info, too. It is sad that we still have a system that processes humans who are not wanted or understood, often people on the losing end economically. This is a monument to that. Thanks.
the name of the video is "inside central state" and it is a montage of photos and small video clips taken from my perspective, inside the hospital..it wasn't entitled, "the world's most informative video on central state".....if that is the sort of thing you're looking for than go google it, do the research yourself, and stop being such a hag.
Is this video gonna talk about anything, or show us something more than just "scenery"? If so can you point me to a more interesting and informative video, thanks?
Indiana is a really messed up place for mental care. Seems to me from my experience, that they treat it as an economic stimulus.
I checked into rehab, voluntarily in Lafayette Indiana when I was young. Next thing I know they are trying to pump pills into me, saying that me abusing drugs wasn;t my problem, that is was something mental. When I refused medication they threatened me with the state hospital in Logansport.
I guess me not cooperating pissed them off, they ignored me till I left.
the things we do to one another just breaks my heart.....those in charge seem to get the most pleasure out of other people's pain....i just don't understand it, and i hope i never do..i'm sorry you went thru such tribulations, but maybe you can become an advocate for better patient care, and turn this into something positive.....
In May, I was poisoned by a doctor...given a prescription for a dangerous drug Bupropion, and the result was that I became irrational and suicidal. I was taken to St. Patricks Hospital in Missoula, MT, where I was shoved into a locked room for the better part of an hour, then roughed up by a Male Nurse named Sam...then spit out. to add insult to injury, I was billed $710.00 for the pleasure.
Bupropion is Wellbutrin, a widely used antidepressant/smoking cessation medication. It was being used initially to treat for depression, then researchers found the people who smoked while on it simply lost desire to smoke, so it is prescribed for dual purposes. If you had a negative reaction to it, its simply because it is altering chemicals in the brain and it may not be the drug for you. Maybe another should be attempted. It is one of the lightest stabilizers in the antidepressants category.
If you want to blame the medication for your poor behavior, that is fine, but it sounds like you may need to try others to help you. I am sure no one tried to poison you - you might want to consider a drug for paranoid schizophrenia, as that is what it appears your diagnosis should be.
i'm not sure who your comment was aimed towards, but i was gonna say that those suffering from bi-polar disorder can also sometimes experience delusions of grandeur and exhibit paranoid behavior....
hey man i just got back from central state about 40 minutes ago. Me and two friends went to go check it out. It was very interesting. We went at about 12:30 t night. FIrst we checked out the cafeteria. It was pretty cool. But it had been ransacked and had paintballs everywhere. We then checked out the admissions building. Which was way fucked up. When we first entered there was chairs in a circle and a gas can in the middle. Then we stepped inside the receptionist office.
But anyway, there was a meth lab set up and a coke can used to smoke crack. And a instruction booklet for a revolver and a holster. So we left just in case there was some guy high running around with a gun. But yeah i plan to go back and check out more in the future. Is there any buildings you would recomend?
yeah...the majority of the footage in this was taken inside the broiler room...the last bit at the end was shot inside the APS building...but we could hear someone running back and forth frantically upstairs....my sister and i were worried it might be a deranged homeless guy so we took a few shots, and skeedaddled! this last week we went and i got a bunch more footage from inside the bolton building...and you are also correct about the police patrolling the premise..they're all over that place.
Everyone can walk through this open area now. Though it is abandoned, it is patrolled by city police with cameras everywhere, so don't try and go in the bldg's as they are seriously unsafe.
Worked there as an intern, lived in old nurses quarters in administration building, know the layout of the property well

Yeah, the police are starting to arrest people who go inside, take stuff or shoot unauthorized video.

the things we do to one another just breaks my heart.....those in charge seem to get the most pleasure out of other people's pain....i just don't understand it, and i hope i never do..i'm sorry you went thru such tribulations, but maybe you can become an advocate for better patient care, and turn this into something positive.....

Then we stepped inside the receptionist office.
chicknhuntin420 3 years ago
But anyway, there was a meth lab set up and a coke can used to smoke crack. And a instruction booklet for a revolver and a holster. So we left just in case there was some guy high running around with a gun. But yeah i plan to go back and check out more in the future. Is there any buildings you would recomend?
chicknhuntin420 3 years ago
yeah...the majority of the footage in this was taken inside the broiler room...the last bit at the end was shot inside the APS building...but we could hear someone running back and forth frantically upstairs....my sister and i were worried it might be a deranged homeless guy so we took a few shots, and skeedaddled! this last week we went and i got a bunch more footage from inside the bolton building...and you are also correct about the police patrolling the premise..they're all over that place.

Most of the inside video was posted from the the old "boiler room" styly bldg I'm guessing from the looks of it. all other bldgs and hammered up.
gregsdaone 3 years ago
Everyone can walk through this open area now. Though it is abandoned, it is patrolled by city police with cameras everywhere, so don't try and go in the bldg's as they are seriously unsafe.
