Why is there all this chatter and arguing on singers vocal range... why cant everyone just sit bback and enjoy... stop super analyzing every note every note change its so stupid.
@955pokerface oh so every singer that ever lived has to be technically compared to those three singers? Just because she doesnt use whistle notes and riff all over the track shes not as good?
Alto is NOT a vocal type. If u would reffer to someone as Alto, u MUST reffer to someone as TREBLE as well since, both are musical parts in choral music. The Alto cleff is given to: Contraltos, mezzo-sopranos and countertenors. Treble Cleff is given to: Light Mezzo-sopranos, Sopranos and Sopranist (Soprano countertenors). Both cleff are divided in 1st and 2nd parts, where 1st are higher voices and 2nd the lower. :)
@KTWanderlust U meant, contralto :). Alto is not a voice type, is a part in choral music. But I totally agree with u. Mezzo-sopranos are known to be belting voices. Adele´s voice seems to be stronger in her lows
RT soldatojoker85 she sounds airy and strained below f5. DEFINITELY a contralto. a mezzo is vanessa amorosi (a high mezzo though) or beyoncé. sopranos are voices like kate bush.
last part of your video lacked head voice. that was pure falsetto.
@aquamarine11500 no in classical i am correct and in choral music i am correct in pop music there is no Alto classification apart from what people ''assume''.. but as a fact it is not an actual vocal type classification.
@Dam112 Exactly. Alto is a part together with the treble. Its a part of the pentagram, not a voice type. In choir music, they will put un the alto clef or the treble clef, despite ur actual voice type.
Voice type for women: Contralto (Always misunderstodd as "alto") mezzo.soprano and soprano. Adele is FAAAAAAAR from been a mezzo. She is a full contralto as amy was. U can look this info as easy as wiki by "googling" it... :)
@JMQDutary But I disagree, Adeles heavier timbre is not to be confused with a dark voice, her belting all the way up to D5 has a bright and rich tone. Where she has very good lower register her lows belore D3 are not any stronger than other mezzos with great lower registers, and definatley lacks the manly, dark full timbre that a true contralto would & btw mezzo belting doesnt start at C5, Range is only a small factor is deciding vocal type...
@JavJune That's just.. not true. There are only 3 female voice types : Contralto, Mezzosoprano and Soprano. U might reffer to a LOW MEZZO as a Dramatic Mezzosoprano (though, this better suits classical music) but Alto is NOT a vocal type. She's a contralto, Proved by the BRIT school for performing arts & technology where she graduated :)
she sounds airy and strained below f5. DEFINITELY a contralto. a mezzo is vanessa amorosi (a high mezzo though) or beyoncé. sopranos are voices like kate bush.
last part of your video lacked head voice. that was pure falsetto.
@soldatojoker85 The last section was a connected headvoice not falsetto. To end she is a mezzo & Adele's has a heavier voice than some mezzo's but timbre is full round bright, not airy or dark. She doesnt strain 8:00 are clear, properly placed C#5/D5, the ones after that was obviously a stylic choice due to the clip before showing she can hii those notes just fine.
@Dam112 Dude.. Go and tell that to her music teachers at the BRIT school for performing arts & technology in Croydon. They categorized her a CONTRALTO, which is also VERY CLEAR in the color, timbre and tessitura of her voice. To suggest a thing like she is a mezzo is ridiculous (no offense) A real mezzo would be: Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J (happen to be in the same college) and Leona Lewis (Same college as well) By simply listening to a song performed by them, u catch the difference :)
@JMQDutary wheres the proof they catergorized her a true contralto. Her tessitura is in the mezzo range for majrity of her work... she has a bright rich timbre not dark or at all manly (there it is still a clear feminine voice) Jessie J is actually far more soprano than mezzo, Leona lewis is a true soprano as is Jennifer.. beyonce is the ONLY mezzo YOU JUST mentioned. and she has a superior lower register to Adele. ''catch the difference''?....
@Dam112 IF Jessie it's a soprano, which I highly doubt, the Jennifer hudson surely will as well, and she has been categorized as a mezzo. As u said it ur self "Range is only a small factor is deciding vocal type..." Leona might be a soprano.. a darker type. But Adele is definetly NOT mezzo... I'm very sure of it.
@JMQDutary Please dont patronise me and refer to be as boy ok
Leona - soprano JHud - soprano JessiJ - high mezzo, could be soprano, her twangy tone is misleading but her tessitura is quite high
Adele - does NOT possess a dark manly tone, her low notes are resonant but not as strong as a contraltos, and just because she hasnt belted above D5 doesnt emply she cant when her B4-D5 are bright rich supported healthy and that of any other mezzo. She has been compared to Amy stylistically.
@Dam112 Adele is not a mezzoprano boy! Remember she is only around 23 and her voice is far mature! She is been compared to Amy which was CLEARLY a contralto (Am I wrong?) Adele show the respective normal sights of a contralto voice: Dark and smoky timbre, powerful lows and lack of highs. Even her Range (even though is not a main factor to say if she is or not) LIES in the contralto (Chest: C3-Roughly E5). Tessitura? Her tessitura lies in F3 to C#5... Contralto. Switch to head: A4.
@JMQDutary Source: Someone Like you (Comfortable low voice F3), Set fire to the rain (Switch to head voice at G#4) Don't you remember (Highest belt, C#5) all of those are in her best "texture" of the voice. She will, however, sounds better in a lower sense rather than in a higher sense. You can clearly see that in "He won't go" where she sounds passionate and beautifuly dark. The song has C3 as the lowest note. "Someone like you" has an E5 as the highest note and u can clearly hear the quality..
@Dam112 BTW... Beyonce's lower register is NOT stronger than Adele's.. it might be wider, which contradicts your own belief about range (Range is only a small factor is deciding vocal type...) but ts not the same quality! Just click on a random vocal range video for beyoncé and listen to her High C and Adele´s High C. Beyoncés High C sounds as an Adele´s Middle G (G4) which means that Beyoncé has a powerful quality of sound and real BRIGHT color in her highs, unlike Adele´s, pushed ones!
@JMQDutary Beyonce has hit resonant, projected, full B2 with ease and freedm which Adele hasnt even shown on a C#3... so yes Bey has a stronger lower register I didnt say that comment in terms of having a wider lower register so do not assume i did.
I am going to stop replying to you now, so n need fr you t ''try and get the last word'' or ''to patronise''..
Adeles lower register is not that strong - her belts are BRIGHT full round - her headvoice bright on those F5s = mezzo
@joannini8me Regardless of people's voice types, they'll still need some decent amount of training to reach their full vocal potential. Not hitting high notes doesn't mean anything.
@BrenTheGorgeous well Alto isnt a vocal type classification.. but yes i agree she is a mezzo. People confused a heavier tone with a 'dark' tone and her limited use of the 5th octave as a 'limitation. when the notes she does display in the 5th octave are resonant & bright. She has a 'mezzo' that has a heavier tone not a Contralto
I think that Adele is a contralto because she does have a quite dark and rich tone. Her timbre is dark. She has a beautiful tone and her voice is very unique!
@ThePianoguy89 her voice is not dark.. She has a 'heavier' tone than another mezzo like Christina. But she does not have a true dark contralto timbre. Its definatley that of a mezzo
@Dam112 I really do think her voice is dark and heavy, especially when hearing her sing next to Alicia Keys, which Alicia is also classified as a contralto. Her voice is darker than Alicia's voice. Adele's voice is similar to Etta Jame's voice because because of the depth that it has. Etta James is known for her contralto voice and Adele was inspired by Etta James too, but I'm not saying that it's the reason why she's a contralto.
@ThePianoguy89 I think she is just a heavier voice Mezzo:
1. Her tessitura is that of a mezzo
2. Her LR is rich but would be alot stronger as a contralto.
3 Her belts resonate higher, listen to A4-C#5s XTina, Whit.. Alicia hasnt always been classed as a contralto her voice has matured shes not TRUE contralto, As I think Adele has a heavier tone than some, but thats not to be confused with a DARK timbre. cause well hearing other dark voices, hers isnt
@Dam112 I am aware that Alicia was not always classified as a contralto, but I was not saying that Adele is a true operatic contralto. I think of Adele as being the typical pop contralto. Her voice may not be dark as other singers like Cher, Toni Braxton, or Annie Lennox, but I still think that Adele is a contralto to my ears.
She isn't a mezzo/contralto (almost the same besides a few notes and other qualities). Adele is an alto and you can tell from the range. Look at other singers who have been classified as contraltos or mezzos and they have a higher range belting wise mostly, still there's a difference. Also take into account that she reaches only an F5 last I checked contralto and mezzo are around B5 or higher in head voice. I do adore and worship Adele's music I just want to set the record straight.
@16kurakura you obviously dont know what your talking about.. ALTO is NOT a voice type... Also voice type is not classified by vocal range. She is a mezzo. look at other mezzo ALL factors of her voice, from tessitura, range, belting all match to other mezzos NOT contraltos. Her just hitting an F5 doesnt mean that is the highest note she can hit... you need change your record because it aint right mate. sorry
You deleted my comment with correction. I checked it carefully and I was right. You confused many notes in low register. Lowest is C#3. And C3-F5 gives 2 octaves, 2 notes and semitone, not 3 notes.
@Dam112 Okay, maybe it may touch C3, but many other lows are wrong. I compared them with piano emulator. You didn't do any mistake at chest and head voice notes, but when i was listening and checking lows i was like WTF? ;p
@fuckingbrill I checked with AP, piano, by ear & replication... I double, triple & quadrouple checked most notes. WIth Adele its so easy for her to Touch a note, they are notes listed, not the primary. They are correct, but thanks
@Dam112 Your piano could be a little of tune or sth. I could prove you that there are some mistakes, but i'm too lazy to compare your notes with notes recorded from piano of taken from other songs. Nevermind, forget it ;p
@Slaychelle I am fully aware that range doesnt distinguish vocal type. As i said ''other people'' only think shes contralto because of her limite range.. and say ''oh she cant hit upper belts but she hits lows - she must be contralto''
1. Her tessitura is that of a mezzo
2. Her LR is rich but would be alot stronger as a contralto.
3 Her belts resonate higher, listen to A4-C#5s XTina, Whit, Bey(even though bey is lighter) etc their tessitura/tones match
Such a great voice. She is a true musician in many ways, musically and vocally. Definately is bringing back some real, and meaningful stuff :) love her.
@SjoerdRAWR I didnt want to, Im doing a seperate video for that concert. I dont think she hit any lower/higher note anyway. But ill double check and post it just after christmas. But thanks :)
she's probably gonna be super careful for a while. i've got my fingers crossed hoping her voice will be the same when she's healed and trained up again. ^_^
@TLPOMNIMEDIA She is on the mends, just waiting for doctors go. I think she will work on her next album alot though to also pass more time for her voice to rest.
@TheTomimomi455 I wouldnt class them as belts, could be mixed ''technically'' but its the enunciation ''eyyyyeeee'' instead of ''ooooo'' that gives that impression i think
- but i dunno really, theres still Minie Ripperton, Chaka Khan, Debelah Morgan, Kelly Price, Anastacia, Tony Braxton, Jessie J, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Mary J Blige, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Lynn...
Loves her voice. Her lower registry is beautiful and her chest voice is everything. Also, isn't she a contralto? Her voice, especially live, gives contralto.
@VaunTV Her vocal characteristics seem to lie between contralto & mezzo/soprano, not really match with contralto. Her use of a limited range I think is a reflection of the style of singer not voice type. But judging from her C5/C#5 and studio D5/E5) she can hit upper belts
1. Her tessitura is that of a mezzo
2. Her LR is rich but would be alot stronger as a contralto.
3 Her belts resonate higher, listen to A4-C#5s XTina, Whit, Bey(even though bey is lighter) etc their tessitura/tones match
@Dam112 Okay. The whole mezzo/contralto line is always a blur with me, Lol. When I hear Mezzo I think Whitney, Beyonce, ect... Adele's voice just reminds me so much of Etta & a bit of Ewa Podles.
@VaunTV Look up the classifications for conralto and mezzo and they are the same. Mezzo has a thicker and darker tone than soprano and contralto is a higher alto and they fall in the same category. I personally believe adele to be an alto because of her lack of range. She also doesn't have the belting qualities of a mezzo (such as beyonce).
@16kurakura Contralto IS NOT the same as a mezzo. Mezzos lie between contralto and soprano. Contraltos are the deepest and darkest type of voice in female singers classification. 'Alto' is a section of a chior where contraltos and mezzos & sometimes sopranos are all singing together.
So, the is contralto-mezzo-soprano & within each there are dramatic, lyric, colouratura.. where you can have (for example) a mezzo that has a darker timbre than another mezzo.. but they are stil both mezzos.
@peliculero74 I could change wikipedia right now to say she's a male soprano... Don't rely on wikipedia anyone can edit the information and it's not all accurate.
those A4s in someone like you are brilliant! now she is The great singer, without having to run her voice over the melody or push her voice and raise her larynx to scream out high notes just to prove how she can sing! your videos are amazing :)
@kelvinpyaeko Much appriciated :) Yeah although I do hope she explores & shows us more of her voice, her mixed E5s in Someone Like You (studio) were so niice & her headvoice is a beaut, I dont think shell ever be a ''let loose' vocalist. But the more confidence she gets the more she'll sing to her natural limits instead of staying purely safe (but I aint complaining, I just look forward to that one day)
@Dam112 No problem :) I just think she is showing restraint, which is still fine to me :) but getting out of her comfort zone somewhat wouldn't be too bad either lol let's see what's up to in her next album
I really like her. But I'm not gonna say I'm the biggest fan, because I would be being a bandwagon because I just recently start listening to her music & I'm not really a fan. She seems like she can belt higher. She belted those C5's & C#5's easily.
The ONLY THING that matters when we are listening to a singer is the vocal tone, not the range or the vocal acrobatics... Adele has a GREAT tone in her voice. Stop.
@MenichiniOfficial Oh you have to love her vocal acrabatic and innotations, they are pure class, each riff & phrase is used specifically for the lyric. Musically shes just superb
@Dam112 - ^_^ I juat said that the most important thing is vocal tone... and I think all riffs and runs are just added to give more color and more importance to a phrase. I'm a singer too, and I sing soul music, so I know very well that vocal acrobatics are just right in this genre ;-) If you want you can visit my channel ^_^
oh HTTN HAHAHA JKJK!!!! but u do have a point. maybe amy winehouse is the 2000s white queen of soul whereas adele is the white princess of soul. adele is like the lady gaga of soul music since gaga has only been named princess of pop adele should be named the white princess of soul lol! :P
Even if she has not a big range I think she is one of greatest artists of today, I mean look at other artists they all do the same music (electro dance) and use auto tune. Adele uses her voice, her natural talent that's why I appreciate her.
Overrated and overhyped as a vocallist imo i find nothing special about her voice or singing

Her just hitting an F5 doesnt mean that is the highest note she can hit... you need change your record because it aint right mate. sorry
Dam112 2 months ago
You deleted my comment with correction. I checked it carefully and I was right. You confused many notes in low register. Lowest is C#3. And C3-F5 gives 2 octaves, 2 notes and semitone, not 3 notes.
fuckingbrill 2 months ago
@fuckingbrill I checked them many times, also they are correct. C3 touches a C3, it is primarily a C#3 for majority of the note, but touches a C3
Dam112 2 months ago
@Dam112 Okay, maybe it may touch C3, but many other lows are wrong. I compared them with piano emulator. You didn't do any mistake at chest and head voice notes, but when i was listening and checking lows i was like WTF? ;p
fuckingbrill 2 months ago
@fuckingbrill I checked with AP, piano, by ear & replication... I double, triple & quadrouple checked most notes. WIth Adele its so easy for her to Touch a note, they are notes listed, not the primary. They are correct, but thanks
Dam112 2 months ago
@Dam112 Your piano could be a little of tune or sth. I could prove you that there are some mistakes, but i'm too lazy to compare your notes with notes recorded from piano of taken from other songs. Nevermind, forget it ;p

@Dam112 People think any female that doesn't belt g5's constantly is a contalto.. kind of ignorant..
BrenTheGorgeous 2 months ago
@Dam112 It's not just the range but the timbre and weight of the voice. She has quite a dark, rich timbre
Slaychelle 2 months ago
@Slaychelle For some reason people tend to perceive thicker voices as lower voices. Heavy tone however doesn't make Adele a contralto. She's a mezzo
ksionc100 2 months ago
@Slaychelle I am fully aware that range doesnt distinguish vocal type. As i said ''other people'' only think shes contralto because of her limite range.. and say ''oh she cant hit upper belts but she hits lows - she must be contralto''
1. Her tessitura is that of a mezzo
2. Her LR is rich but would be alot stronger as a contralto.
3 Her belts resonate higher, listen to A4-C#5s XTina, Whit, Bey(even though bey is lighter) etc their tessitura/tones match
4. She DOESNT have a dark timbre.

TheTomimomi455 2 months ago
@TheTomimomi455 I wouldnt class them as belts, could be mixed ''technically'' but its the enunciation ''eyyyyeeee'' instead of ''ooooo'' that gives that impression i think

her tone is so amazing and unique. Killer middle chest voice. Nice video! :)
0AspiringStar0 2 months ago
Loves her voice. Her lower registry is beautiful and her chest voice is everything. Also, isn't she a contralto? Her voice, especially live, gives contralto.
VaunTV 2 months ago 11
@VaunTV Her vocal characteristics seem to lie between contralto & mezzo/soprano, not really match with contralto. Her use of a limited range I think is a reflection of the style of singer not voice type. But judging from her C5/C#5 and studio D5/E5) she can hit upper belts
1. Her tessitura is that of a mezzo
2. Her LR is rich but would be alot stronger as a contralto.
3 Her belts resonate higher, listen to A4-C#5s XTina, Whit, Bey(even though bey is lighter) etc their tessitura/tones match
Dam112 2 months ago
@Dam112 Okay. The whole mezzo/contralto line is always a blur with me, Lol. When I hear Mezzo I think Whitney, Beyonce, ect... Adele's voice just reminds me so much of Etta & a bit of Ewa Podles.
VaunTV 2 months ago
@VaunTV thats no prob but thats because of style of singing/genre ... not vocal type
Dam112 2 months ago
@VaunTV Look up the classifications for conralto and mezzo and they are the same. Mezzo has a thicker and darker tone than soprano and contralto is a higher alto and they fall in the same category. I personally believe adele to be an alto because of her lack of range. She also doesn't have the belting qualities of a mezzo (such as beyonce).
16kurakura 2 months ago
@16kurakura Contralto IS NOT the same as a mezzo. Mezzos lie between contralto and soprano. Contraltos are the deepest and darkest type of voice in female singers classification. 'Alto' is a section of a chior where contraltos and mezzos & sometimes sopranos are all singing together.
So, the is contralto-mezzo-soprano & within each there are dramatic, lyric, colouratura.. where you can have (for example) a mezzo that has a darker timbre than another mezzo.. but they are stil both mezzos.
Dam112 2 months ago
@16kurakura Beyonce is a soprano...
pedy19 1 month ago
Mezzo? , I would consider her more of a Contralto

peliculero74 2 months ago
@peliculero74 Wikipedia isn't the most trustworthy source of information.
fuckingbrill 2 months ago
@peliculero74 I could change wikipedia right now to say she's a male soprano... Don't rely on wikipedia anyone can edit the information and it's not all accurate.
hessounusual95 2 months ago
those A4s in someone like you are brilliant! now she is The great singer, without having to run her voice over the melody or push her voice and raise her larynx to scream out high notes just to prove how she can sing! your videos are amazing :)
kelvinpyaeko 2 months ago
@kelvinpyaeko Much appriciated :) Yeah although I do hope she explores & shows us more of her voice, her mixed E5s in Someone Like You (studio) were so niice & her headvoice is a beaut, I dont think shell ever be a ''let loose' vocalist. But the more confidence she gets the more she'll sing to her natural limits instead of staying purely safe (but I aint complaining, I just look forward to that one day)
Dam112 2 months ago
@Dam112 No problem :) I just think she is showing restraint, which is still fine to me :) but getting out of her comfort zone somewhat wouldn't be too bad either lol let's see what's up to in her next album
kelvinpyaeko 2 months ago
I really like her. But I'm not gonna say I'm the biggest fan, because I would be being a bandwagon because I just recently start listening to her music & I'm not really a fan. She seems like she can belt higher. She belted those C5's & C#5's easily.
LifeisMusic07 2 months ago
adele has probably the best mid-chest register(after christina)! :D
MimiXtinaChelleKRow 2 months ago
The ONLY THING that matters when we are listening to a singer is the vocal tone, not the range or the vocal acrobatics... Adele has a GREAT tone in her voice. Stop.
MenichiniOfficial 2 months ago
@MenichiniOfficial Oh you have to love her vocal acrabatic and innotations, they are pure class, each riff & phrase is used specifically for the lyric. Musically shes just superb
Dam112 2 months ago
@Dam112 - ^_^ I juat said that the most important thing is vocal tone... and I think all riffs and runs are just added to give more color and more importance to a phrase. I'm a singer too, and I sing soul music, so I know very well that vocal acrobatics are just right in this genre ;-) If you want you can visit my channel ^_^

Even if she has not a big range I think she is one of greatest artists of today, I mean look at other artists they all do the same music (electro dance) and use auto tune. Adele uses her voice, her natural talent that's why I appreciate her.
