Phelps is a great 400 and 800 freestyle swimmer too, he is also ranked 3rd in the world for 200 back. IF he had the time he could have won 11 or 12 golds at beijing.

Pierangeli had it right, except Thorpe was able to swim anywhere from 100-800m freestyle. He was the greatest swimmer of the time.

please give me a break man. Thorpe greatest swimmer of all time? are you kidding me? Michael phelps is hands down the best ever having won 14 gold medals in olympic history plus 17 world championships +30 world records or more. Thorpe is just a quitter who maybe will be remembered as the best middle distance freestyler of all time. Saying that Thorpe is the best of all time makes you look ignorant and a fool. No question in most people's minds that Phelps and Spitz are the best two of all time.
