I am a dane. I don't really understand the point of this open letter, but I appreciate where you come from. I too think that intolerance is too great in Denmark, and that Dansk Folkeparti need to step down. But I also believe that more young danes are becoming aware of this fact - I hope so. That said, in 2007, crime (murder and rape) in Denmark was at the same level as 1995. There is no clear linear trend that an increase in immigration had resulted in more crime. What is true is that the Danish media has created a fear of crime. The media's creation of "fear of crime" is something I learned in college 20 fucking years ago. In the U.S. crime has been decreasing but fear of crime is increasing, due to the media. This is the same in DK. Listen to the few Danes with sense & education.
As for crime, the only spike in crime I see (in Interpol stats) was in 2005, when the cartoon incident happened. One thing Danes need to learn about freedom of speech is that this is an issue of government censoring people. If you offend people and they react (boycott, violence) that is different than free speech. American loudmouths like Farrakahn or Rush Limbaugh have body guards. Note that the murder rate in DK has been going down steadily. Also, keep in mind, the Danish government does not account for race and religion in crime statistics. I am a dane. I don't really understand the point of this open letter, but I appreciate where you come from. I too think that intolerance is too great in Denmark, and that Dansk Folkeparti need to step down. But I also believe that more young danes are becoming aware of this fact - I hope so. We have religious freedom, and so young islamic women can choose to wear a head scarf, if they want to. Just like I can choose to wear a cross. No different. Don't punish them, because of extremists.

I think the "KKK is OK" jazz is taking moral relativism too far. Maybe his ethnographic experience with the Klan was nice, and they accepted his black wife. That's great. I actually really dig Holdt's work. I was unfamiliar with it, but it's like a photographic version of Harrington's "The Other America". That said, in 2007, crime (murder and rape) in Denmark was at the same level as 1995. There is no clear linear trend that an increase in immigration had resulted in more crime. What is true is that the Danish media has created a fear of crime. The media's creation of "fear of crime" is something I learned in college 20 fucking years ago. As for crime, the only spike in crime I see (in Interpol stats) was in 2005, when the cartoon incident happened. One thing Danes need to learn about freedom of speech is that this is an issue of government censoring people. If you offend people and they react (boycott, violence) that is different than free speech. American loudmouths like Farrakahn or Rush Limbaugh have body guards. The government doesn't censor them, but people want to kill them. Something Theo Van Gough learned the hard way.

And the sad thing is -- I wish Danish racism was a minority, fringe movement. It's a huge mainstream movement that most Danes seem to subscribe to. I see it in the policy, the growth of the DF and the coalitions they have formed in government. I see it on the net. 90% of posts are in favor of racist and nationalist (a nice euphemism for racism). Look, we have assholes like Louis Farrakhan who say that white people and Jews are devils. We have Christians who say that women asked for rape because of how they dress. Most Americans are pretty good at sorting out extremism from the mainstream. We know Farrakhan is not like most Muslims and Koresh is not like most Christians. If Muslims treat women so poorly, why have Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkey had female prime ministers and presidents? Denmark has not had one female prime minister. Note that the murder rate in DK has been going down steadily. Also, keep in mind, the Danish government does not account for race and religion in crime statistics. To me, the statistics clearly tell the story that as immigrants have come to Denmark, most crime has gone down -- particularly murder. Rape has not increased either.

Apparently, white, ethnic Danes are desecrating the graves of Muslims, and this is a real, well documented problem that the U.S. diplomacy is aware of. The report also notes that immigrants are being ignored by law enforcement when THEY have a crime committed against them. Just like DK's hate speech laws, when immigrants are victims in DK, they are ignored.
