I watched this performance live, on an afernoon TV prog about 4 yrs ago. She was eighteen at the time. Her mother was in the studio, and about to go home to New Zealand and leave her beautiful talented daughter on her own for the first time. This aria is intended to be sung by a " young " woman such as this one. Read the italian translation - it is about a young woman wanting her father's approval to be with the young man that she loves. There are many older women who have great voices but this was originally intended to be sung by a young woman probably in her teens or twenties.

When the song is sung in the context of the rest of the opera it's actually quite funny. Lauretta isn't really in love with Rinuccio, she's just madly infatuated with him. She barely even knows him and only just met him.

It's a beautiful piece, sung by a beautiful singer here, but it's not some tale of star-crossed love. The opera is a *comedy*.
