everyone's a critic.. great song.. pivotal album.. fuck billboard unless I'm looking for pop music.. which the surfers never were.. thx for posting it..
Hmmm...I always thought the lyrics were "I don't mind the sands of time, the images it shows.....you never know just how you look through other people's eye" The meaning of the song kinda changes depending on how you hear it :P
They are basically underground and have been since the late 70's . This was their first main stream hit , Although a great track a different style then what they are known for but it is similar crazy style and strange grunge rock style .
smallblockmania ive been listening to these guys for a lot of years and they have soo many variations of there music its mindbogling ive seen two versions of this video and all there european album cover art is different if you can ever find the video of this song where there walking and singing the choris that is the old old video let me know.
I know its a little late. But im just know getting into this band and i have noticed that this song is very different than most of there other songs. Maybe its just cuz i dont know much about them but this doesnt even sound like them to me.
@roughpastels A song that is unlike anything else in the mainstream yet still achieves popularity is not a "sell-out" song; "Pepper" was an anomaly on both the album and the music charts.
lyrics should read "they were all in love with di and they were drinking from a fountain....."
di is dianne, a person. it's debatable whether di was the fountain they were all drinking from or if they just put their mouths up to the great firehose of life. all we know is it was pourin' like an avalanche coming down the mountain.
Just my idea on the lyrics-they are about youth and risky living that involves drugs, guns, STD's & other violence. the desire to push boundaries even to the point of risking your life-- i.e. in love with dying then when those come out on the other side they fall in love with life etc. One of the greatest songs eva.
The song is about dope. (heroin) Cinnamon (spelled sinamon) Sugary, and Softly Spoken Lies were all stamps on bags in the NYC area when this song came out.
i used to listen to the Butthole Surfers backin 85" im just saying they are timeless and treaet your girls like good sluts... i mean girls... rock on... BLACK FLAG
They got that effect by reversing the guitar track once it was recorded- same thing the Beatles did near the end of their career. I don't think the Surfers were trying to make guitars sound like bagpipes. They probably just thought it sounded trippy... and it does. If you listen closely, you can also hear a reversed drum machine in the second verse. Don't forget the reversed vocals during the bridge. Sometime I'm gonna have to play this whole song backward just to find out how it sounds...

The Butthole Surfers are pretty much the 80's version of The Bloodhound Gang and The Lonely Island.

@SmallBlockMania It's not like the rest of their cd. It's the blacksheep, so if you decide to purchase the cd know it's not like the rest.

@Hahazombie yeah. i have 3 of their cds. and to me it just doesnt sound like them at all. i dont even think the vocals sound like Gibby.

@Hahazombie It's not the black sheep, it's the sellout song. Still good though...

eojmiz 2 years ago
@eojmiz Very good interpretation...especially where it says
Some will die in hot pursuit in fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit while sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down a mountain
is also talking about the choice people will make between dope a.k.a heroin whether life is more important than the drug.

The annotations are nice. It's easier to follow the lyrics when they show only when they're heard.
