They are basically underground and have been since the late 70's . This was their first main stream hit , Although a great track a different style then what they are known for but it is similar crazy style and strange grunge rock style .

smallblockmania ive been listening to these guys for a lot of years and they have soo many variations of there music its mindbogling ive seen two versions of this video and all there european album cover art is different if you can ever find the video of this song where there walking and singing the choris that is the old old video let me know.

Just my idea on the lyrics-they are about youth and risky living that involves drugs,guns, STD's & other violence. the desire to push boundaries even to the point of risking your life-- i.e. in love with dying then when those come out on the other side they fall in love with life etc. One of the greatest songs eva.

They got that effect by reversing the guitar track once it was recorded- same thing the Beatles did near the end of their career. I don't think the Surfers were trying to make guitars sound like bagpipes. They probably just thought it sounded trippy... and it does. If you listen closely, you can also hear a reversed drum machine in the second verse. Don't forget the reversed vocals during the bridge. Sometime I'm gonna have to play this whole song backward just to find out how it sounds...
