Holy crap! I cant believe there's a video for this song! I thought maybe, just maybe a small chance that someone would put a video together for this. I have the single on Dreamland Records. I remember listening to Casey Kasem do the Top 40 and hearing this song and having to buy the 45. Awesome sone and it sitll sounds good. Should have been a bigger hit. When I get my jukebox, this single is going in it! Thanks for putting together the video...awesome!
Holly Knight cowrote it, but, I guess she felt she couldn't sing it well enough. She did go on to sing in her group called 'Device.' HIt #39 in Billboard. God bless!
if a band called widow does this song put it up on youtube. the video for this song is now up thanks to amanda leigh( blue) but it needs to be aired on classic vh1 to get heard by more people.
Seeing this video again is like seeing an old friend...the year was 1979 I was a senior in HS, they made my year......I lived in L.A. and Friday Nights were late night Rock World........
Anton went on to play drums for Cyndi Lauper and Holly well....she went on to become one of the best song writers in 80's era music history
I have the 45rpm. I wish I'd bought 2 of them. I've worn my copy out. The back side was a good song too. Crossfire. I never saw a video to this song. :( This is awesome that it's at least the audio posted here. Didn't think it would be. Now all we need is Maureen Steele Save The Night For Me and my day is complete. Or "Friends Like These" by T'pau. Hint hint! :)
@john4951 - I think that because this song might've been ahead of its time, it along with the band were virtually ignored. Don't forget that many radio stations were playing it a bit safe as disco was imploding that year.
pat benetar, the pretenders and blondie all got radio play at the end of the disco era and this was rock not dance so i do not know what rado stations were being so "safe" about. 2 women fronting a rock-pop band was really cool like Heart., it makes no sense.
there is even a video for this song and the song was still not played much. it got played about april -july 1980 but not very much. i never forgot this song as it sounded so good to me when i was 15 years old.
@The096757 - Don't forget; Blondie and Pat Benetar were still considered 'safer' bets than a band like this. Don't also forget that they, as well as Heart and Fleetwood Mac were all on major labels; Spider wasn't. Moreover Pat Benetar at the time had just one album out. Yes, "In the Heat of the Night" got her recognition, but she wouldn't really make it big until late in 1980 when "Crimes of Passion" was released. Her 'tough girl' image also played a role.
i blame this on the radio stations not being willing to play this and then mtv for not picking up the spider videos in 1981 when they launched. i've been around long enough to know whoever gets heard gets to sell. i see no connection with this to disco other than the back cover (something i and others observed THEN ) had a leather look with a somewhat sexual connotation. again, these were observations i and other made THEN and not 30 years later when it is easy to see things in retrospect.
also the pretenders had a leather look too. pat benetar... i like some of her music but the jutting chin and " i wont take nothing from nobody" may have impressed many but not me i value music on how it sounds. the image matters later.
the quality of spider's first album (2nd was fairly good too) was really good quality music and should have been right up there with Heart and The Pretenders. blondie and benetar used gimmicks and were not as good as heart, spider and the pretenders.
Back in the early days of music video, there was a channel on the local cable system called "Video Jukebox".."Garbageman" by The Cramps was ALWAYS paired with "New Romance" by Spider. This was ~1980...What the hell were they thinking?!?
wow- haven't heard this in ages-remember my roommate had this vinyl.Should of been a bigger splash....If I remember right, weren't they signed with a new label on the block and right after this came out the label chief was killed in a car crash and the whole label/roster suffered because of it??
I believe the person and label you are describing are Neil Bogart and Boardwalk Records. Neil had Joan Jett in her prime and Ringo Starr after "Caveman". Neil died in the early 80's and the label folded shortly afterward.
My Billboard Top 40 book lists the catalog number for the song as Dreamland 100. I believe Dreamland was headed up by Mike Chapman & Nicky Chinn and was affiliated with RSO. The label only lasted 2 years, 1979 to 1981.
I believe you are correct. Suzi Quatro, Spider, Michael Des Barres (McGuyver's nemesis), and Nervus Rex were the only artists I could find on that label. Mike Chapman produced all the recordings.
I suppose that Mike Chapman resurrected the Dreamland label with RCA later that decade. Lita Ford's albums 'Lita' and 'Stiletto' were released under both labels. I do know that PolyGram folded RSO sometime by the mid '80s.
Either way, while this song was released at the end of my ninth grade year and it's possible that I might've heard it back then, I can't say that I recall it. It's pretty cool, nonetheless.
LOVE THIS SONG! I remember seeing the video way back when - it involved mannequins I remember that much - too bad no one has it posted. But nice to know this song is still appreciated !
thats so cool..youtube has given regular folks an opportunity to share tunes on a global scale..man this is great there is sooo much talent out there.
I have more tunes in my collection to pull out like this one. I included this song in part of my "should have been bigger hits" collection from 1980. So many people requested that I make a standalone video that I did.

@DaveWollenberg
Yep, Device had a couple of hit songs in the mid 1980's. If I recall correctly, I believe their biggest was "Hanging on a Heart Attack"
Holly wrote many hit songs in the 80's and 90's.

Why the hell did I confuse Anton Fig with Butch Vig? Because both were previously backing members for a great female vocalists, I guess...
