btw smart one i have the phone and i have put in peices before the sensor is where you first touched the reason its not disabling is because phone line open (no call), the second thing is the reason why it disables when you touch the top is because the iphone although it has multi touch capabilities it does not apply them to everything soo when you touch 2 places wile running somthing things on it, it will not do anything (when you touch the top of the screen and else in dialer it gets confused
It's amazing that you have the intelligence to analyze this issue, but lack the sense to insert a '.' ANYWHERE in your response for readability. A nit, I know - but annoying.
The proximity sensor doesn't do anything while you are dialing numbers. The sensor only works once the number has been dialed, and sent. The purpose of the sensor is to detect when you have the phone placed up to your ear. Once it senses that the phone is up against your ear the sensor makes the iPhone turn off the screens' display. This conserves battery power. It's another brilliant feature of the iPhone.
The previous comment is true. The sensor is above the receiver speaker slot. The reason you can't dial numbers is because you are touching the screen in two different places. The iPhone won't let you dial numbers when you touch the screen in two places at once.
Anyway, I have a zCover on my iPhone and I like it. The proximity sensor still works. The sensor can "see" through the rubber. The only issue I have is that fuzz likes to stick to the zCover material. I just wash it off once in a while.
Actually the proximity sensor is right above the receiver. This video is completely wrong. If you take the iphone outside when it is very bright you can even see the sensor right above the receiver. Sorry to burst your bubble but the sensor does not block normal use of the phone. All the sensor does is turn off the screen when you are on a phone call and it also adjusts the brightness of the screen. Cover the receiver part when on a phone call and you will see that the screen turns off.
