  • poor bob. fucker died. he can be proud of this.

  • Big hair, Hell Yeah!!! sorry bobby, u rock harder than a cialis od anyhow

  • the goddamn best rock band ever

  • bob never looked like a weenie!

  • How the fuck do you favorite videos these days?

  • @xAlyssaJones37

    Press the "save to" button

  • funny to think, today with an average cell phone you could have better audio video quality. This rocks nonetheless!

  • @allrain I know! And the worst part is the studio albums are all overdubbed to death.

  • @808pb you must be talking about the later ones because even with whatever studio tricks they do it stil sounds sloppy and sparse. to me its not overdubs its just that some of thealbums sound more dated than others.. i can't listen to don't tell a soul mostly because of the sound itself not the songs

  • @drewtotally Yeah, those last two studio albums (Don't Tell a Soul, All Shook Down) were just awful. They were nothing more than warmups for Paul Westerberg's short-lived solo career.

  • Sends shivers down my spine.

  • God bless The Mats! Warts n' all.

In my mind they're the greatest. Regardless, most will agree that they were, are and always will be a powerfully important rock & roll band.

ps. i'm presently in a Pleased to Meet Me phase

  • The 'Mats were the best ever. It might sound weird but they helped save my life. Being a severely depressed Chicago punk, in 1986, Chicago's WXRT were interviewing Paul and Tommy about Pleased To Meet Me. They were drunk and giggling, and after coming out of my Sid Vicious stage, I needed to laugh. Then XRT played Alex Chilton. To me it was like saying don't take life so seriously, we are all fuck ups, drink some beer and laugh at yourself, just be yourself. Will always love 'em.

  • being a severely depressed chicago punk in 2006, i felt the same way. you ever see them at metro? how about the last show, in grant park?

  • Yeah I saw them at Metro, the Aragon, and yes I indeed saw and heard quite clearly Tommy Stinson coming out and saying "This is the last time you'll ever see us together again!" My ex tried to comfort me, but could not be comforted:)

  • @tikal302000 I was at those three as well. The 4th show in Grant Park was one of the most bittersweet days...I had an awesome time, but ya know...still sucked. The Aragon show was phenomenal. One of the best shows ever once we shoved our seats over along the side.

  • @boomboxlamf The 4th show in Grant Park was one of the most bittersweet days...I had an awesome time, but ya know...still sucked. The Aragon show was phenomenal. One of the best shows ever once we shoved our seats over along the side. The first time they opened for Tom Petty in '89 maybe. It was at that outdoor place up north of the city...Poplar Creek or something. Awful. Nobody except for about 50 people knew who they were...and they knew it and played shitty and got the hell outta there.

  • @mrfiggins I saw them opening for Tom Petty at Great Woods near Boston. They were drunk, dressed in drag, and simply terrible. They had 30 minutes of stage time and chose to spend most of it shooting the shit with each other between songs.

I drove 50 miles with a carload of friends to see them. I went home pissed off and disappointed.

  • I fuckin' love(d) Bob Stinson, I know he was not the most talented, but he had a truly original style and sound, RIP baby, you are not forgotten ~!~~!!

  • Dude he was way talented.

  • yeah he seriously was, you could have had a band with the stinsons and mars and it would have still been an awesome band

  • moved to Minnesota to go to college partly because of these drunks.......great to go to a SCSU bar and hear the Mats.

  • They just didn't sound like a normal band from back in the day and neither id the pixies,if they were out these days I could imagine them being much bigger, well there's alot of bands that were really underated back then like sonic youth, the cult, smithereens and a whole bunch more. But still all great bands I named right?

  • You're an idiot

  • what the fuck? you clearly don't see the genius behind it all, you just see a couple of drunk kids... but there is so much more than that.

  • the stones, doors, animals, dylan etc. where trying to sound great at every show. the 'mats didn't care if they sounded great or not. :D

  • Hey Paul, if you see this give me a shout. I really owe you a drink or two! b.

  • Paul doesn't drink anymore...for a lot of years now.

  • not true, paul has quit/started/quit/started several times.

  • OK then, since you know him so well...do you not think it is best he stay sober??? I do. Although his best work was done while intoxicated...

  • His best work happened to be done when he was a drinker. Coincidence not cause. For example, if he was drunk all the time now, his recent great recordings would, in all probability, be a mess.

  • Like I stated previously, "his best work was done while intoxicated". Just listen to the Mats...every bit of was done while they were loaded and every bit of it is incredible...my opinion. I think it is better though, that he is sober. That is all.

  • Actually, "every bit of it" is a bit of a stretch, but that's not my point. Nearly every critically important musician hits their peak when they are younger; at least when it comes to composing original material. Age has more to do with "it" than sobriety levels.

  • I used to have a lot more to say when I was younger...it was a younger point of view. Before we get old and jaded, it is very crucial to express oneself and find ones true identity. Believe me, "sobriety" is very critical. I wrote all kinds of shit when I was strung out. Today, it sounds pathetic. That is primarily what Paul was saying for years after he got "sober".

  • who cares whether he was drunk or sober his music is fucking amazing

  • Cheer up emo kid...hahahahahahahaha

  • Agreed, if you look at the history of popular music, the best writing is by musicians in their 20s, and for a fortunate few, into their 30s. Over 40 like me, nah.

But a novel written by someone 45 is a much better bet than someone 25.

  • Energy, look and need all there for 20Nuthins but we old timers can write better lyrics, edit with savvy, round the blockness. Novels by the very young are almost always poxy, you're right.

  • F. Scott Fitzgerald was in his late twenties when he wrote The Great Gatsby.

  • i bought, gave, had a beer taken by bob 1 day before he died at 1st ave. nothing to do with the argument, just wanted to mention it.

  • Wow! I suppose he was pretty messed up??? That sucks he had to die from "horse".

  • no more or less than normal. i think the syringe found next to him hab more to due with his death

  • Heroin aka horse sucks ass...I am glad I got cleaned up. It was a life of misery.

  • Bob's body just gave out from years of abuse and not so much smack or booze but decades of everything.

  • Yeah, okay, whatever you say.

  • just what I heard dont bite my head off.

  • Uh, yeah, whatever yo say.

  • insulin needle found next to the body...just saying but whatevea'.

  • I am so glad his death had nothing to do with drugs...thanks.

  • i love them so much that whenever a new video is posted i could cry. greatest american band

  • I agree with you about being the "greatest american band", but come on already...crying??? There is no crying in rock and roll....hahahaha.

  • okay, maybe the crying was a bit over the top. but i do geek out whenever a new video posts of them

  • How can you tell when there are new posts of them?? I know how I can tell now...you can let me know, if you want? Hahahaha....I am just too dense to figure it out.

  • oh god, i loved this band!

  • they were the best band of the 80's. paul isn't an asshole and the band continued to make great music after Bob left.

When I worked at Tower Records in the mid 90's

I had lunch with Westerberg and a few of my colleagues he was somewhat cagey but we bonded over jazz music.

  • Foshaytower- Do you still do trades for Syd Barrett material?

  • The Mats made the 80s tolerable. Is there a master for this that includes more?

  • Nice Member's Only jacket, Bob...

  • PS the'mats were one of the best live bands of the 80's, drunk or sober...they do blow the roof off, I saw 'em alot.

  • Or like trying to explain orda to someone who doesn't get language evolution.

  • trying to explain the replacements to someone who dont getum is like explaining the chicken orda egg.

  • Best band Period. The Replacements RIP.

  • "The sheer brilliance and beauty of this period of Replacements work is unparalled in modern rock history" - sounds like BS rock journalism, but so what, they rocked!

  • Damn straight.

  • no paul's hair is awesome and it should have stayed that length forever!

  • anyone who dont like this band dont understand rock and roll and you can go and fuck off and wank over bland bono turd twat !!

    tiny / salford

  • This is not at Maxwell's. It's at the 7th St Entry, MPLS. It's a video audition for labels.

  • Yes, it was a soundcheck at Maxwell's. I was there - Jan. 1986.

  • Can you help me stand on my feet?

  • pauls hair is the biggest problem!

  • The fact that the music bed and the video aren't running together only matches the 'Mats fucked-up elegance.

  • The audio/video sync problem is not on my original .avi file, but for some reason the youtube formatting process causes it to happen after I upload it. Wish I knew how to prevent it, but glad it doesn't bother you too much.

  • @foshaytower2 as per doug "fucked elegance". the best kind

  • @doughnutbreath "fucked up elegance" describes them so perfectly! Should be the title of another book about them.
