@808pb you must be talking about the later ones because even with whatever studio tricks they do it stil sounds sloppy and sparse. to me its not overdubs its just that some of thealbums sound more dated than others.. i can't listen to don't tell a soul mostly because of the sound itself not the songs
@drewtotally Yeah, those last two studio albums (Don't Tell a Soul, All Shook Down) were just awful. They were nothing more than warmups for Paul Westerberg's short-lived solo career.
The 'Mats were the best ever. It might sound weird but they helped save my life. Being a severely depressed Chicago punk, in 1986, Chicago's WXRT were interviewing Paul and Tommy about Pleased To Meet Me. They were drunk and giggling, and after coming out of my Sid Vicious stage, I needed to laugh. Then XRT played Alex Chilton. To me it was like saying don't take life so seriously, we are all fuck ups, drink some beer and laugh at yourself, just be yourself. Will always love 'em.
Yeah I saw them at Metro, the Aragon, and yes I indeed saw and heard quite clearly Tommy Stinson coming out and saying "This is the last time you'll ever see us together again!" My ex tried to comfort me, but could not be comforted:)
@tikal302000 I was at those three as well. The 4th show in Grant Park was one of the most bittersweet days...I had an awesome time, but ya know...still sucked. The Aragon show was phenomenal. One of the best shows ever once we shoved our seats over along the side.
@boomboxlamf The 4th show in Grant Park was one of the most bittersweet days...I had an awesome time, but ya know...still sucked. The Aragon show was phenomenal. One of the best shows ever once we shoved our seats over along the side. The first time they opened for Tom Petty in '89 maybe. It was at that outdoor place up north of the city...Poplar Creek or something. Awful. Nobody except for about 50 people knew who they were...and they knew it and played shitty and got the hell outta there.
@mrfiggins I saw them opening for Tom Petty at Great Woods near Boston. They were drunk, dressed in drag, and simply terrible. They had 30 minutes of stage time and chose to spend most of it shooting the shit with each other between songs.
I drove 50 miles with a carload of friends to see them. I went home pissed off and disappointed.
I fuckin' love(d) Bob Stinson, I know he was not the most talented, but he had a truly original style and sound, RIP baby, you are not forgotten ~!~~!!
They just didn't sound like a normal band from back in the day and neither id the pixies,if they were out these days I could imagine them being much bigger, well there's alot of bands that were really underated back then like sonic youth, the cult, smithereens and a whole bunch more. But still all great bands I named right?
His best work happened to be done when he was a drinker. Coincidence not cause. For example, if he was drunk all the time now, his recent great recordings would, in all probability, be a mess.
Like I stated previously, "his best work was done while intoxicated". Just listen to the Mats...every bit of was done while they were loaded and every bit of it is incredible...my opinion. I think it is better though, that he is sober. That is all.
Actually, "every bit of it" is a bit of a stretch, but that's not my point. Nearly every critically important musician hits their peak when they are younger; at least when it comes to composing original material. Age has more to do with "it" than sobriety levels.
I used to have a lot more to say when I was younger...it was a younger point of view. Before we get old and jaded, it is very crucial to express oneself and find ones true identity. Believe me, "sobriety" is very critical. I wrote all kinds of shit when I was strung out. Today, it sounds pathetic. That is primarily what Paul was saying for years after he got "sober".
Agreed, if you look at the history of popular music, the best writing is by musicians in their 20s, and for a fortunate few, into their 30s. Over 40 like me, nah.
But a novel written by someone 45 is a much better bet than someone 25.
Energy, look and need all there for 20Nuthins but we old timers can write better lyrics, edit with savvy, round the blockness. Novels by the very young are almost always poxy, you're right.
How can you tell when there are new posts of them?? I know how I can tell now...you can let me know, if you want? Hahahaha....I am just too dense to figure it out.
"The sheer brilliance and beauty of this period of Replacements work is unparalled in modern rock history" - sounds like BS rock journalism, but so what, they rocked!
The audio/video sync problem is not on my original .avi file, but for some reason the youtube formatting process causes it to happen after I upload it. Wish I knew how to prevent it, but glad it doesn't bother you too much.

God bless The Mats! Warts n' all.
In my mind they're the greatest. Regardless, most will agree that they were, are and always will be a powerfully important rock & roll band.
ps. i'm presently in a Pleased to Meet Me phase

they were the best band of the 80's. paul isn't an asshole and the band continued to make great music after Bob left.
When I worked at Tower Records in the mid 90's
I had lunch with Westerberg and a few of my colleagues he was somewhat cagey but we bonded over jazz music.
