Kind of funny how they are hiding in ambush- and singing at the top of their lungs. LOL.
That's the cool thing about opera: rather than just dialog between people, they speak their thoughts and feelings out loud in a way that would never be plausible in spoken drama but somehow comes off remarkably well in opera.
I'm not so sure I would nominate Di Luna as the villain of IL TROVATORE. That would have to be Azucena, surely...she KNOWS Manrico is the Count's brother...
It's been said that Verdi preferred baritones, he felt the voice was more natural and I would have to agree with him! =) He generally wrote great music for the baritone roles.
The only complaint to this performance is that Leonora's cavaletta of act 4.1 was cut. Whether she is stupid or not, for not choosing Il Conte di Luna, I don't know (If I were her, I will choose Luna by Ettore Bastianini's of course, but then this story will not move the way librettist wrote....so....).
But she is the most brave woman, who is ready to sacrifice herself for her beloved. I am not sure if I can do it.
The North American ear is certainly different from the Southern European ear. Americans would almost certainly get in a line led by baritones Merrill, Warren, Tibbett, JT Thomas and Shore but the folks from the hot countries of Europe would certainly flock to Ruffo, Bastinini, DeLuca and Scotti. Put them side by side in 2 opera houses and I have no idea who'd consistently win as :greatest baritone." Ruffo? Merrill? Not MDM! Tenors are next week.
Oh come on, both Bastianini and Del Monaco were the best- but Bastianini was the very best of the best- I'm partial to baritones. But Del Monico was absolutely amazing too. Both men were not just great singers but were so handsome too! Sigh!
Bastianini is as great as any other baritono, but Del Monaco was great also.... Why do people make such uneducated an disrespectful comments about these legends?
Was there ever a better baritone? NO!
Was any baritone hotter than him? NO!
He's the greatest!

The first time I ever heard this, I couldn't bellieve Verdi gave the most beautiful aria to the villain.

Well, this Leonora must have been the most stupid woman of all time. To prefer Manrico to the sexiest di Luna of them all - I'm without speech!!!

Actually, I'd be hard pressed to have to choose between these two great performers- both can sing and are so handsome.

I would so choose Bastianini over Del Monaco in a heartbeat. Bastianini can sing!
