Yes Yes ... 23yr old Jimmy Pages solo, just listen to The Anderson theater version or, even that whole LP period... Jimmy was Soooooooo Faaaaarrrr out there, original & beyond what 23yr old kids were & have done since... Beck was right on the heals But... although I think Jeff has Jimmy "Licked" these Days (Cmon Jimmy WFT??? Ha!) and then Jimi comes into play, Cream and uh, Hmmm... Thats It I think right???
I have this CD and this version of Mr isn't to my liking, especially the solo, prefer Jeff's original or BBC ones or Pages live Yardies solo. The best track for me at least is Slash rendition of "Over Under"
I think only Jeff Beck can be rated as highly as May.
Page played about 10 blues licks over and over again, getting sloppier and worse over the years. Clapton has bascially never ventured out of the blues area, but at least he never really played badly. May pioneered delays, 3 part harmonies and use of harmonisers. He was tapping before Van Halen made it popular. He has used sweep picking. Have Page and Clapton expanded their playing and done these things? I don't think so.
So you judge a guitarist on how "cool" they sound when they play solos? Oh dear.
I judge a guitarist on their experimentation, and variety in their playing. Just playing the same blues licks over and over again may sound "cool" to you, but it gets tiresome for me. A solo they captures the mood of the song is far more appealing for me, and because Queen did so many genres (i know Zeppelin did too, but not to the same extent in my opinion) of songs, the solos must be different to make them fit.
THAT SOLO EFFING SUCKS!!!

Brian May plays with such taste and elegance. He makes hard rock so classy.
