  • Luca sounds Canadian.

  • Fantastic, very impressive, I wish I spoke this many languages so fluently.

However, I read a statement which included Dutch as one of the languages in which he is commonly mistaken for a native speaker. I cannot concur, as he is very clearly a non native speaker of Dutch, making small (though not very significant) mistakes in grammar and word choice, and repeatedly mispronouncing several vowels. I would never think he was a native speaker.

Nonetheless, his knowledge of language is amazing!

    They speak Spanish too!

(I have no more options) xD

  • Do you guys want to learn Georgian? Rare language but ancient :) I speak 5 languages fluently so far. Would like to learn some more! Love learning languages.

  • OMG, this in unbelievable, i wish i could meet this guys in person. They're just fabulous, that triggers the desire inside me to not give up of learning languages, i'm learning, 4 languages at the same time, if someone wants to talk to me or have any suggestion, contact me, my e-mail is panda_poot_7777@hotmail.com. I like to receive feedback!! Thanks RIchard and Luca, you're my favorite polyglots!

  • Going immediately from Spanish to Italian is the killer. I get those two muddled up the whole time.

  • Have a contest to see who can learn a new language faster! xD Just kidding. I wish I was a polyglot too!

  • I know it's a random question not really about languages, but I overheard Richard say he grew up on the border between England and Wales. Am I correct to presume that he's from Bristol? I can hear it in his accent as well.

  • What do you think about Luca's english? Does he have accent?

  • @bburago9 almost none at all. pretty much native.

  • @bburago9 Yes, he has a very clear accent to me, at the very first sentence I had to look up what country he was from. I don't see him ever being mistaken for a native speaker. That's only a matter of pronunciation though, his command of English seems excellent.

  • @Spamtubing I met Luca quite a few times here in Paris. 100% of the native English,French and Spanish speakers who talk to him think he is a native speaker of their language. I am from Paris and I have NEVER met a foreigner who can speak French so perfectly (accent AND the rest) I met him at a bar called polyglot quite a few times, and saw him interact with tons of people. Anyway, I think that this discussion on whether he sounds 100% native or not is quite useless. My 2 cents. FP

  • @FelixPotain85 I linked this to 6 native speakers of American English, asked them to listen to the first 10 seconds, then stop the video so I could ask them a question. Every single one said he couldn't pass for a native speaker (without me saying anything beforehand about what they were listening to). Their responses varied from "That guy sounds more Northern European" to "Weird accent" to "Absolutely not an American".

Sorry to burst your bubble, but your "native speakers" were just being nice.

  • @Spamtubing Watch "How Luca acquired an american accent." You can actually learn quite a lot from him instead of wasting your time (and mine, which is far more important) with these useless remarks. Once again, just my 2...dimes ;-) FP

  • @FelixPotain85 So I returned to say thanks for the recommendation, and I'd check out the video. I also wrote an extensive compliment on the language abilities of both polyglots. However, when I hit "Post", it said Luca blocked me. So he actually BLOCKS ppl for commenting that his accent is not native!? Wow, I am astonished at the degree of his vanity. No wonder there aren't more people saying: "You don't sound like a native speaker." He just deletes/monitors/blocks anyone who doesn't praise him.

  • @spamtubing2ndaccount I came back home and I found this. I blocked both you and Felix because I wanted to avoid the conversation getting out of hand. I should have just told you guys to stop, but I am tired and I thought that momentarily blocking both of you was the quickest solution...(I would have unblocked you tomorrow). You are free to say whatever you want on my videos. In the last 3 years I blocked VERY few people. But please, don't make assumptions on my vanity ;-) L

  • @poliglotta80 Alright, alright :)

Either way, the blocked thing I'd tried to post is that accent doesn't matter, functional ability matters most, and I am absolutely in awe of both you and Richard Simcott. You clearly have extensive functional ability in a very wide range of languages. I am very impressed and I'm glad you are both promoting the fun side and usefulness of language education to young people by posting these videos.

  • @Spamtubing He sounds american you pillock,

  • Really exciting video, Luca!

I already enjoyed you two at Facebook.

I love this change from Italian to Dutch most, ha!

  • Wow, these two are absolutely amazing! I would like to know how these polyglots keep all of the languages straight! I'm studying Italian and French and I've studied Spanish in the past and I'm always confusing the languages, using a Spanish word in an Italian sentence or creating words that are part French and part Italian, but maybe that's just because I'm old. :P

  • Me too. Wow! This is the best video I've scene starting the new year. I would like to know what is C1 B2 basically the letters with numbers sounds interesting to know what level you're at. What website can I find more info on that topic?

Also the sound quality was excellent. Btw where can I learn to add subtitles like that Luca? What is your methods, and daily routine to sound beautiful in those languages you were speaking in this video? If you can send me the link I would really appreciate it.

  • @joshuamercedtv As for those C1, B2 etc., just search "CEFR" on Google and you'll get all the information you need :)

  • @Scallonesi Thanks, I found that out, also is their any way to see samples on PDF files of each level A1-C2. Basically the table of contents.

    Thanks again Scallonesi,

    Joshua Merced

  • @joshuamercedtv Thanks for the nice words! To add subtitles you can use a sotware program called POWER DIRECTOR. As far as my routine is concerned, search for "Thepolyglotdream" or just type "Luca easy way" on google and you'll find what you are looking for :-) . L

  • @poliglotta80 I was just at your blog a few hours ago. You have great information. I will Google that software. I was at Richard's blog reading several blog post prior to visiting yours. Both of you of really a true inspiration to us beginners tapping into the different cultures. I love what you wrote: “who learns another language, acquires another soul” Soon I was continue watching more of your videos, also I subscribed to your blog.

Thanks for everything you do for the world,

    Joshua Merced

  • I’ll have to say it again, Luca, your videos and those of other polyglots remind me how awesome it is to speak so many languages.

Ankaŭ estis tre interese ekscii, ke Richard parolas Esperanton!

Et toi ? Est-ce que tu t’intéresses au Espéranto ?

  • @Edcxjo Esperanto seems like a lot of fun to learn but it is not in my hitlist right now. Maybe one day, who knows? And thanks for the nice words! L

  • Mi ne sciis, ke Richard parolis Esperanton!

I didn't know that Richard spoke Esperanto!

No sabía que Richard hablaba Esperanto!

  • To speak so many languages so naturally is something rare and special. This video is inspirational, and a testament to hard work paying off. Richard and Luca are the reason that I have been inspired to post videos about language learning on youtube..

  • @gaoyoude1 This is one of the best comments I've received so far. Thanks so much! Plus, your videos on learning Mandarin are absolutely outstanding. If you are up for a chat on SKYPE one of these days, please send me a PM here on YouTube. Luca

  • That was fucking amazing lol

  • i need to study more, really, i wanna learn more languages, porque até agora eu mal-mal sei duas, haha, pero yo voy estudiar más.

  • Italiano mostruosamente impeccabile, in ogni senso!!! :O

  • I'm so jealous! I have to study harder! ^^

  • Wow! That was very impressive, really. Excellent pronunciation of those languages!

  • Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Suerte!

  • Thank you for the wonderful video. It contains a great deal of interesting information for language learners. You guys both are great !

And I wish Richard best of luck with my mother tongue - Polish.

    Serdecznie Pozdrawiam

    Rysiek

  • wow l'italiano di Richard è spettacolare!

  • Good job guys! I'd wanted to say, à propos the issue about people who say they speak up to 30 or 40 languages. Don't forget that even though in a western european perspective, this might be fairly impossible, there are people in other parts of the world who communicate in many different languages in their everyday life and, in particular, during their whole life span. I believe, are to be found in various parts of Africa, south of Sahara, or in the India-region.

  • It's easy to find a trilingual person on Mauritius, and it's not common to meet a trilingual person from India, but speakers of unpopular languages (say Sanskrit) are a lot more likely to learn more popular languages in they region than the other way round. I think 4-5 languages are maximum for "native polyglots", people having multiple languages as their mother tongue, and it's in those "multilingual" areas, like Mauritius, India, or Switzerland. 30-40 is a BIG exaggeration.

  • @xalesd2 not UNcommon of course.

  • hello luca! great interview, wise words both of you guys, interesting, funny at moments, great motivation and passion towards the languages. by the way, luca, i have been looking around on your website, how can i say... its simply brilliant, great analysis about the languages, etc.

i want to thank you for sharing your passion, wise knowledge and the way you teach it, i really enjoy all of your videos. que estes bien luca, saludos!

  • Simply AMAZING! Both of you always impress me, keep up the great work!!

Ps, er svenska är extremt bra ;)

  • Nothing to say, as usual these 2 guys keep inspiring me, and making me feel so ignorant :D

You're the definition of the word "polyglot"

  • great vid. keep up the good work.

What is so beautiful about both of you is that you guys are very modest, despite the fact that you have amazing skills. Skills that require years of practice and are the best evidence of richness of your character.

  • Is Richard Jewish? Nope. Great interview, made me smile. Mae fy Gymraeg yn eitha rhugl nawr Richard, ond wi wedi colli fy Ffrangeg! Gobeithio bod popeth yn iawn gyda ti a'r teulu.

  • @surferg1rl Da iawn! :) Diolch am y compliment! :)

  • Amazing, encouraging, simply a pleasure to listen to. Thanks guys, a belated Christmas gift for all language enthusiasts, I guess. Hope to talk to you soon again. Das war ein fantastisches Interview - Gratulation!

  • Is he Jewish ?

  • Leuke video, jullie twee!

  • Madre mía, Luca..... ¡cada vez hablas mejor! ¿Cómo lo haces?

  • Aww po-russki)

  • Haha goed gedaan Luca!

  • Incredible interview!! I mean, that was crazy!! Envy on you both!! So, when I learn a language, once I have an advanced level, as you mentioned, I'll practise it or read something, at least once a week. & if I have chance to speak to some native, better!! So, 16 languages from Richard, great!! Somebody, they might exist those who speak like 40 or 50, like Moses McCormick. He speaks that quantity. Anyways, congratulations & probably I'll be in that interview with Luca. May God want. Kind regards!

  • Luca, I've seen most of your videos now and thus have had quite a bit of exposure to your American accent. While among the best of any foreigner I have heard, and certainly laudable, it was still subtly foreign. During this last question, however, your accent was almost perfect! I say this with very critical ears.

You two are inspirations to all of us who wish to learn multiple languages. Thanks for taking the time to upload this interview!

  • This is incredible. Extremely impressive. I love languages as well, but living in the US, we aren't exactly surrounded or exposed to very other languages. I've taken high school French for more than 3 years, and I understood pretty much everything in your French interview. I plan on going on to learn many more languages though. Latin-based languages especially intrigue me. So thanks for the awesome interview, it was really interesting!

  • I am so glad I saw this video. That is why it irks me when some polyglot want to learn over 10 languages in a short period of time. The more languages you learn, the harder it is to maintain. And you can't be fluent in all of them. I see many polyglots on Youtube keep picking up languages, but the more they learn new ones, the forget the old ones. I just don't see the point of buying tons of books in 10 to 20 languages to learn and never learn well.

  • I just want to speak Italian, French, Japanese and German, and maybe Irish Gaelic, After that, it seems excessive to learn more languages than that. And right now in my life, I don't see the point to learn more. The Italian, French, Japanese and German is for work related benefits, but the Irish is truly for fun only.

  • Richard sounds like a Macedonian or Bulgarian while he speaks Russian... interesting :)

  • Such a brilliant interview! Thanks for the upload Lucas/Richard

  • From 8:05 to 12:15 you both sound 100% native! I'm from Argentina, therefore Spanish is my native language. I hope you both write a book or a method together because the way you both approach language learning does work. There are so many 'magic' methods out there to learn languages, and you hear the audio files and they sound so bad and people still buy them. You two are the best polyglots, and it's always great that you let people know that there's no magic method, it's all about hard work.

  • Luca's American accent is just so good. I'd never know he's not native if I didn't know him.

  • @TheTrieutran, and he said he has never been to the United States. LOL

  • @TheTrieutran Really?? Are you a native speaker of English? Because from the very first two words "Hello everybody" it was immediately obvious to me that he's not a native speaker. I had heard less than a second of him speaking before deciding to scroll down to see what country that accent was from.

  • @Spamtubing It wouldn't hurt to exaggerate a little bit when complimenting someone. You said you'd only listened to the vid less than a sec, so why don't you just listen to the rest and see why many ppl are impressed with his accent. Not trying to be rude but it's funny how you can judge his accent based on only 2 words. I'm not saying that he pronounced the 2 words with a perfectly native-like accent, but the way you immediately jumped to the conclusion amuses me.

  • @TheTrieutran I noticed within two words that he was not a native speaker. This is how the great majority of native speakers respond to hearing someone speak with an accent: You don't take a full minute to decide. Either they have an accent, or they do not. It makes no sense whatsoever to suggest another minute of listening makes any difference once you've already detected the accent.

  • @TheTrieutran Also, my use of the pluperfect should have made it clear (unless you are, as I asked, not a native speaker of English?) that I listened to all, most, or at least MORE of the video: "I had heard only two words when...", not "I have heard only two words". By the time I posted my response I had watched this video in its entirety. (As evident from my other comment on this video, made before my response to you.)

  • @Spamtubing And I really don't see how you keep insisting on whether I'm a native English speaker. I may not be "native" as how some ppl would put it, that is being born in an English speaking country and growing up with native English parents. No I have neither of that. But does it mean I'm less likely to understand your comments or distinguish different English accents? I might not be born in the US but I have grown up here...if that counts....

  • we have been waiting for a video like this since you visited richard...it was well worth the wait. thanks guys.
