@fewleh don't worry about the v6 engine, if you maintain it well it's a very reliable engine. Mine 2.5 has done 265.000km and running very good. Oil consumption is about 1 to 3000 and still reaches a max speed of 235 km/h (gps).

What oil do you use out of interest? 10 x 40 is the normal recommended...but I heard on the older engines it's good to change to 5 x 40 I think it was? This is because I'm getting a bit of tappety noise on start up for 20-30 seconds...until the oil manages to get properly into the piston heads...
wheels can be bigger and the speedometer show biger speed, as faster U go also it cheats for about 5-10% anyway V6 have a 260km/h counter not 240 like in this one so I think some MODs were made in it, for me real speed should be proved by the GPS system... :) than we will be sure :D sorry for My English :D
This is for SURE a alfa V6 engine according to the sound !!! But time 18.5sec in acceleration from 100-200 km/h is much more quicker than a time of the stock 2.5 V6 ! The 156 GTA is NOT in 100-200km/h acceleration as quick as this or very similar ! This must be tuned or swapped engine or just taken on a downhill highway.
I said "faster" and mean that speedometer will show diferent speed than U go... :) and biger wheels dont burn more fuel, if u ride on 205/55/15 u will burn the same as on 205/45/18,
@wim038 What is the defenition of an overdrive? It's the top gear which has a fall of about 2000 rpm as to the lower gear. Its for reducing fuel consumption, engine noise and increase of the engine lifespan.
I can tell you, that my 156 v6 doesn't have a fall of 2000 rpm from 5 to 6, but only 500 rpm or so. So in the 156 v6 with 6 gears it is just a gear and not an overdrive.

With these values you can calculate your theoretical max speed in every gear. I thought the max speed in the 6th gear at 7000 rpm is 260km/h (3500rpm in 6th is 130km/u)

Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 and the top speed is only 250km/h???.....i think that you should really change your fuel and water filters..because they must be in really bad cheat seeing that I have de 156 1.6 T.Spark version and my top speed is 255km/h (the pointer dosen't go any further) and my filters are in medium shape...
Don't dis the 156. My 2.4 V6 lasted until 150,000 miles before it started to give me problems.
Everyone who loves cars should own at least 1 Alfa for the driving experience. Just listen to that engine sound.
If you want to reliability buy a beemer or audi and look like all the other pricks on the road that drive them. If you want something more exclusive and to feel part of your car then buy an Alfa.

You clearly have never owned an Alfa. The rust problem went out in 95 (last being 155). I have owned several Alfa since then & unless you are a cowboy owner (which sadly there are alot of) then they should not rust full stop!
Also contrary to the many stupid comments i have read Alfa's are totally reliable - you just need to look after them & ideally get them checked / serviced twice a year. I trashed the shit out of my 156 GTA & it has not let me down once. Done 50K in my GT & its fine

french???? you are sick boy, peugeot has one of the most reliable engines. well my dad still has peugeot 605 2.1 turbo diesel and it has almost half a million kilometres on it and engine runs perfectly and the best thing is that it takes only 4.5-5L of diesel on motorway and about 5.5 in the city.
Guy, the build quality wasn't the best in the 156 1st series, ok, but it was improved in the 2nd and 3rd series.
Then: you are only talking about vibrations and build quality..what do you say about the speed and the acceleration of this engine? Did you know some other V6 2.5 engines with top speed 230 km/h and 1-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds in 90's years?

Obviously this IS a 2,5 v6, you can hear it ,clearly a v6 sound and a 6 speed gearbox. These accelerationtimes don't belong to a 1.8 or 2.0 TS.

visto che sono un maniaco del v6 alfa romeo, la 156 2.5 v6, 1° o 2° serie sul tacchimetro segnava la bellezza di 260 km/h, e non 240.

si mi sono documentato, l'unica a segna i 260 sul tacchimetro è la 2.5 v6, non c'è nessun 2.0 che va oltre i 240 delle alfa 156!
cmq anche se fosse un 2.0 mi sa che è un pò sballato il tacchimetro, a meno che sia elaborata, ciao.

It may reach the legal speed limit, a few seconds before a nissan micra, but who gives a damn, once your at 70-80mph, you have to watch your speed, so unless your a trackhead, there a total waste of money, nothing worse than sitting in a traffic jam, with a 300-500bhp car, burning fuel and going nowhere:)lol

Then...I had two Alfa 156 in the past, 1.8 T. Spark and 2.0 JTS, and I didn't have any kind of problem you are talking about.

french???? you are sick boy, peugeot has one of the most reliable engines. well my dad still has peugeot 605 2.1 turbo diesel and it has almost half a million kilometres on it and engine runs perfectly and the best thing is that it takes only 4.5-5L of diesel on motorway and about 5.5 in the city.

Guy, the build quality wasn't the best in the 156 1st series, ok, but it was improved in the 2nd and 3rd series.
Then: you are only talking about vibrations and build quality..what do you say about the speed and the acceleration of this engine? Did you know some other V6 2.5 engines with top speed 230 km/h and 1-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds in 90's years?
The project of this engine was a jewel of the motor engineering,this clip shows it, and you just talk about vibrations.

I know a few guys here in Finland,who have driven over 250km/h by 156 2.5 V6.
156 2.0 Twins Spark and 1.9 JTD can easily make 230km/h.156 1.8 ~210-220km/h

its 2,5 V6 Alfa 156. In first year of production, speedmeter was only to 240 (year of production 1998 and first half of 1999). Visit my web, and you see my V6 Alfa ;)
