Actually quite a bit happens. First you get to see the beginning of gas powered race car history. The way it was done in the beginning, the late 1930s. Second, you get to see a car and engine built from scratch. I'm not talking about parts purchased and assembled, but I'm talking about parts that this individual made by melting metal and pouring it into molds he made and machining them. Yes, both the car and engine were built from scratch at this individuals home.

Sheesh last time i was at the narrows i didnt see this area o.o is it near the airplane/shotgun field? ...sure sounds like it is... and WHAT THE HELL IS THAT NOISE
@gromann This area is for u-control planes and is on the tarmac right next to the tether car track. I brought my own pylon for running the car. That noise is a pulse jet on a plane being fired up.
@JBofBrisbane As you can see the pre-war cars are not very fast. The real track with safety fence is behind the camera man. There were a lot of cars running that day on the real track so I decided to run it on the tarmac.
LOL funny! it sounds like hit and miss engines, a valved pulsejet and model airplane/tether car engines all in one place! i just love the WHUUMP at 2:05 and 2:27 from the pulsejet!
The guy in the middle helps the car get up to speed when it's first pushed off. He will "horse" the car by whipping the connecting wire faster and faster. Modern cars that go over 200mph will be horsed over 100mph before they can accelerate on their own.
Yes, the car is push started just like push starting a car or motorcycle, except without a clutch. So anytime the rear wheels rotate, so does the engine. So to get it running: 1) Squirt a little fuel into the intake of the engine. 2) Turn on the ignition system switch over the rear wheel. 3) Push the car by running behind it with a broom and when you hear the engine starting to run, give it a shove with the broom. And that's how it was done 70 years ago.
Your nitrofuel is mostly Alcohol/Methanol with about 15% oil/lubricant and a certain percentage (5%-30%) Nitromethane. This car is running on the same fuel but without the Nitromethane.
Sure, not a problem. These old style engines take a bit to get to run. They have a spark plug, coil, condencer and a set of points. Not to mention the carburetor. If I can get all those things adjusted and get it running, I'm a happy camper. Speed really isn't my deal with these old pre WWII cars but I do have some post war cars that I run Nitro in and they go between 100mph and 150 mph.
The nitro engines are a compression ignition engine and the timing relies on high compression, reaction of the platinum glowplug wire with the methanol in the fuel, and heat of the engine to keep running. The ignition engine (spark plug) uses a timed high voltage spark to ignite the air fuel mixture which requires a trimming mechanism, coil and battery to work. You can convert to ignition but is very difficult and you will lose power. Also take a look at Davis Diesel Development.
Thanks for the feedback. It's great to know there are still people out there buiding their own planes, or car and engine as in this case. Nothing wrong with going to your local hobby shop and buying a ready to go R/C car or plane, but there's a different satisfaction in building something yourself and seeing it in motion. Thanks to everyone for your comments.
There will be a tether car Fun Run & swap meet, Sat. Jan. 12, 2008 from 9:00-1:00 at Whittier Narrows Park in So. El Monte, CA. The park is locate at the 60 Freeway & Rosemead Blvd. Take the Rosemead offramp north. Head north on Rosemead approx. 1/4 mile and look for the park entrance on your left. The tether car track is located in the south-west corner of the park. Hope to see you there.
These cars originated in the late 1930s, before R/C, hence, no R/C. As a rule they are set on a track and push started but a buddy of mine, Larry Goddard, did modified one with a starter and clutch so he could set it on the track, start it remotely, run and stop the car without ever touching it. The modern cars exceed 200 mph which I would think impossible to control with R/C. But the older style cars that go about 50 mph might be a perfect candidate to receive a modern R/C transplant.
whats the point of running a car in circles? why not just siwtch the solid axles into a turning axle and add a couple of servos and play with it witout the string attached to a pole
i wanna cut the fucking string and let the damn thing freeee, this type of racing is lame, and un skillful, all you need to do is buy a good ebay engine put it in, and you can win at competions and shit, this is fucking lame,
Yeah, you really sound like you know what you're talking about. I'm guessing you can say this because of your vast experience with this type of hobby. Maybe you should shut yer yap about things you don't understand because it just makes you look stupid. If it's not your thing just STFU and let folks who like it enjoy it.
