australia day? what I forgot again. in this land this sunburnt land of bronzed aussies (a cancerous tan), I follow your command, aussie aussie oi oi oi, someone spray my nits I'll shout out me brand. aussie aussie aussie damn
I'm wondering now if the line about "burned you black" is about the fire-stick farming by which the Aboriginals burned three quarters of the continent into a desert?
Why did i ever leave Oz in 83 to come home to England, simple, because i thought life would be better back home, WRONG . The biggest mistake i have ever made in my life. All i can say is i was there in the 80s, the music , the people , the friends i still have for life, will stay with me forever. Maybe one day i will go back.
@redrosecloudy Australia had the one of the highest standards of living in the 1980's. Food was cheap, housing was cheap. Not so anymore. You would saddened & would be in for a rude suprise if you came back to Australia today & compare it to the great nation it was back in 1983. More Australians today are living under the poverty line due to high cost of living in todays Australia.
@marcey666 Yes, and all previous governments as well. The cost of living has rapidly increased since the 1980's. It went up with Hawke/Keating, it went up further with John Howard & now it just keep going up under Gillard.
@TheHappydazz Australia's standard of living is now ranked number two in the world behind Norway, according to United Nations data. The inflation rate over the past two decades has been amongst the lowest in world, government debt is amongst the lowest in the world and the country's relative position to other OECD countries is better now than in 1983. Things aren't marvellous in Australia right now, but compared to Great Britain, the United States, Japan and Europe, they are extremely good.
Instead of my future kids at school standing up and singing "Australians all let us rejoice" , I want my new national anthem to start with "Standing at the limit of an endless ocean" !
@kimmimoore1 and i happen to be american. so of course i've only ever heard this song because of the movie young einstein, but i'm so glad i did. in fact i love most of the songs on that movie. i just looked up the soundtrack because half the songs can't be found on itunes and it's $93. seems i'm not the only one who loves that music.
@kimmimoore1 I think thats the same place I heard the song...or atleast re heard the song, As I had heard it a few times while a was still pretty young.... Great movie, and great Music!

ok, this song is NOT about South Africa! Icehouse are Australian and the "Great Southern Land" is Australia! The video is also all places found in Australia, not in Africa... get ur facts right!
When a lad I heard stories of Great Britain being just one great landing strip for The USAF which was strategically acceptable for the times as The UK had close proximity to The CCCP. These days I see Australia as one great mine for the likes of Coal Seam Gas Mining, which is far from strategically acceptable for Australia !
@meri7361 Yea cuz South africa was a prisoner island.....sheesh. its written about australia by an australia. What is it with people intelligence levels nowdays
@MJAussie360 Take a little time to research. I saw a Doco where they confirmed this was about South Africa. Iva had to be careful what he said about the song at the time. And YES, I do agree with you - what is it with people's intelligence levels nowadays...
@meri7361 Unless you can confirm 100% which documentary you are talking about then I don't see how you are so sure.
Great Southern Land is about Terra Australis. Plain and simple. Iva even made versions of the song in aboriginal. I know this as fact because I own them.
Only thing I can think of is that you may be mixed up with "The Flame" which was about the South African shootings in 1985. Iva stated he had to be careful with the lyrics since it was a delicate matter at the time.
@meri7361 There is no way this song is about South Africa. It is about Australia. Anyone will tell you its a prisoner island hidden in the sun for a million years.
For some reason when I here this I want to be transported back to the 80's. Just to start a band similar to this. Funny though there are a lot of bands that are coming out with a similar sound. The Presets, Muse, M83 , Foster the people. Hmm hey the first 4 groups I mentioned, are they not from Australia and New Zealand? This kind of music must be in there blood down there. Shit I need to go down there !
back in my day before they had the fancy pants internet...me and a few mates would come home with a coupke of sheelas after a night on the piss...and watch rage and this came on..true blue cober
ahhhh, 1 of the great joys of youtube - the opportunity for worthless tossers to anonymously slag each other off, without the threat of getting their head kicked in. you lot need to pull 1 off. you'll feel better. true story.
@MrKlufty ...huh? What the hell does the government have to do with it? If anything, the government-regulated local content minimum is the only thing stopping your radio station from being wall-to-wall Gaga/Rhianna/Usher.
@MrKlufty how the hell can you blame the lack of new talent along the lines of ACDC and Icehouse on politians? you cannot. we have had good bands not epic ones like the 70's and 80's produced. maybe talent have a life span and next decade it will respawn.
Australian music rules!!!! love the music, specially this song, just shows how much australia is appreciated and it's beauty of this country......love it!
This song has so many memories inside of it. Whenever I hear the line "Great Southern Land..." I instantly think of my childhood memories of travelling around Australia and camping.
it's funny u get all these kiwis coming on here complaining. most of them wish they were aussies anyway. after all they are practically our 9th state anyway. It's not like they achieve anything globally
@bartmitsfer I am Australian, however its morons like you that make me feel ashamed to be so. For such a small nation New Zealand has made many significant contributions to the world that surpass Australia such as Lord Rutherford starting nuclear fusion, the banning of the US nuclear vessels, standing up to French nuclear testing, the highest loss of life per head of population in both World Wars, not to mention the fact they were the only nation to really stand steadfast beside Australia
@AlfredGonzales1788 I'm from New Zealand, we've just had our general elections, i don't have too much hope for our right wing government, I wish they would take a page out of Australia's book on issues such as homegrown produce and higher wages for our own citizens. We need to value our people as much as Australia values its own!
This song is Australia. My first memory of it was on the Aussiest day of my life. At the Boxing Day Ashes test, watching the boys run on to the field to this song, getting ready to face the poms, with Warney getting ready to take his 700th wicket. Love it.
I live in the U.S. and I love Australian musicians....They have something totally different than other areas of the world. Very special....Iva Davies is a genuis.
This song - and the others from "Primitive Man" has followed me ever since the release in -82. Got the album as a gift from my auntie. I was twelwe at the time...I was hooked at once and have been all these years...whenever I feel stressed out I listen to particularly this song...the sound and Iva's voice combined eases my high-speed mind and gets me back to my normal again...Thank you Australia! // From Sweden with love
This song evokes memories of several musical tributes to Australia of the same era, like Ganggajang's 'Sounds of Then', Goanna's 'Solid Rock', The Church's 'Under the Milky Way', The Triffid's 'Wide Open Road', Midnight OIl's 'Beds are Burning', Cristine Anu's "My Island Home", Australian Crawl's "Saturday Night" and of course Men At Work's "Downunder". Ah, good times, great memories.
@I3FX you do realise that f*** all of the convicts sent over here had kids over here aswell?... most of their kids stayed in England
The VAST majority of the people that were here came here by choice and were not prisoners... so once again Ignorance has prevented a simple minded fool such as yourself from knowledge.... bravo good sir bravo
@SGCgunner15SGC That makes them immigrant. ie: American's isn't a race (again, except for natives), people went there by choice, but that doesn't make them american, they are still technically from another race/country.
@I3FX makes them a nationality... also something i should have said.... the actions of a persons Ancestor has no real bearing on what they're like... cause i have some people in my family that have done jail time and has had no effect on me, so when you said that everyone here was either a criminal or native doesn't make any sense.... cause most of the natives are crims anyway XD
@tamiyabuggyracer doodlebanger, it was a joke. No sense of humour, you sheep rooting, possum eating, haka fearing, bloody strewth tha flamin crows talking, world cup -less wallabies.
@TheJamiemills1 Yeah but they didn't say East Island so they could only be talking about Australia. Shouldn't you be posting over at a Dragon video somewhere? :)
DONT READ THIS CAUSE IT ACTUALLY WORKS. YOU WILL GET KISSED ON THE NEAREST POSSIBLE FRIDAY BY THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE. TOMORROW WILL BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE HOWEVER IF YOU DO NOT POST THIS TO THREE VIDEOS YOU WILL DIE WITHIN TWO DAYS. NO, YOUVE ALREADY STARTED READING SO DONT STOP. THIS IS SCARY PUT THIS ON FIVE VIDEOS IN THE NEXT 143 MIN. WHEN YOUR DONEPRESS F6 AND YOUR LOVERS NAME WILL APPEAR ON THE SCREEN IN BIG LETTERS. THIS IS SCARY CAUSE IT ACTUALLY WORKS
Theres an underlying synthesiser going throughout this song (mostly during verses, and is the first instrument heard in the song before the beat begins), this I remember gives me a warm fuzzy feeling as I walk along the coastline thinking of a city on a rainy day down in the harbour. I was way to young to hear this song first hand, but as an aussie classic its always out there on radio. The synth line that comes straight after the chorus, and is constantly repeated is what sets this song apart.
A few days ago, I got the original LP of 'Primitive Man'. I was lying on the floor and kept listening to those sounds while my heart was beating faster. Their New Wave is so different from many other bands but has still such a depth that I still can't explain by myself. I miss the 80's. Even though I lived in them for only 2 weeks ;)
I love this song to bits.

Sorry to say but the convicts came from britain so best u check ur history before u call aussies convicts :p
LikleJewels66 3 months ago
@LikleJewels66 convicts of uk sent to Au, and theres only 2 types of aussie, the natives and the crims
I3FX 3 months ago
@I3FX you do realise that f*** all of the convicts sent over here had kids over here aswell?... most of their kids stayed in England
The VAST majority of the people that were here came here by choice and were not prisoners... so once again Ignorance has prevented a simple minded fool such as yourself from knowledge.... bravo good sir bravo
SGCgunner15SGC 3 months ago
@SGCgunner15SGC That makes them immigrant. ie: American's isn't a race (again, except for natives), people went there by choice, but that doesn't make them american, they are still technically from another race/country.
I3FX 3 months ago
@I3FX makes them a nationality... also something i should have said.... the actions of a persons Ancestor has no real bearing on what they're like... cause i have some people in my family that have done jail time and has had no effect on me, so when you said that everyone here was either a criminal or native doesn't make any sense.... cause most of the natives are crims anyway XD

TheJamiemills1 3 months ago
@TheJamiemills1 this song has absolutely nothing to do with New Zealand. It's all about Tasmania

@TheJamiemills1 Yeah but they didn't say East Island so they could only be talking about Australia. Shouldn't you be posting over at a Dragon video somewhere? :)

People, at the end of the day, its just an amazing song, look at the effect and emotions it has evoked in all of us. I'ts what keeps this song alive,
Simpley its not a song from a boy band about young love, Its cultural. It's about the truth in all of us.
