Asphalt concrete is in fact very elastic, it's made from stuff called bitumen mixed with some rocks aka gravel as a solid filler. What's so special about bitumen in fact is that it can be morphed with a long lasting force (pulling on it, standing on it) it's very pliable then. But when you apply a short force (aka. hit it with a hammer or jump on it) it will shatter like rock or glass.

Can anyone explain this to me? How is it possible for this to occur? If it's made of concrete (or steal) then this shoudn't happen coz those materials are solid.. How is it possible for it to bend like that?????

@SidneySage93 It is made of something elastic: steel! Steel is quite elastic, and will bend pretty far before failing. I don't think there would necessarily be a lot of concrete in the bridge, roads are usually mostly asphalt, which is much more flexible.

Elasticity doesn't just apply to rubber, many many types of solids exhibit elastic properties. You couldn't make a rubber band out of steel, but you can twist it further than you would think.

@SidneySage93 Yeah, the wind transferred more energy to the bridge during each vibration than it could lose during the same vibration. This caused torsional vibrations (where one side went up, the other down, and the middle remained at rest), eventually building up enough energy to cause extremely large amplitudes of vibration, causing the bridge to collapse under the strain. Hope that cleared it up :)

@danieldoak95 Both steel and rubber are elastic materials, so no wonder they behave alike when you deform them. The difference is in the _magnitude_ of the forces needed for a given deformation (strength). Twist a plastic ruler and then a steel ruler about the same size (length, width and thickness) to feel the difference. Now a 40-MPH wind blowing on very large flat surfaces generates massive forces... large enough to twist 8-ft high H-beams made of very thick steel as if it were rubber.

Tubby a black male cocker spaniel was the only fatality of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge disaster Professor Farquharson and a news photographer attempted to rescue Tubby during a lull, but the dog was too terrified to leave the car and bit one of the rescuers. Tubby died when the bridge fell, and neither his body nor the car were ever recovered. Coatsworth had been driving Tubby back to his daughter, who owned the dog. :( they stupid!
