  • wal mart is all made in china shit.

  • @betyerass 99% agree.

  • A short sleeping bag strap and buckle will contain the mess kit nicely

  • Never use alumimum for eating, medical studies say it creates brain disease

  • Dumb the so ummms that would make you more interesting.

  • I owned the first mess kit that you show, it was given to me by my dad when I was 9 years old which was given to him from his uncle when he was 16. I gave it to my son when he was six, it has lasted for the 30 + years my son and I have used it plus 20 + years my father used it before me. Same cheap metal only difference being the knob on the pot lid is made of wood. Remember to wash and dry & only use wooden tools (wooded spoons, bamboo turners) and it will last you a life time.

  • You don't have to buy a $80 dollar mess kit! I like that

  • I just modified my Coleman cook pot. I put a different handle on it so I can hold it like a mug and a bucket type handle so I can use it like a billy can. Pretty simple stuff but if I didn't explain it well and you want to see it let me know and I'll make a quick vid and I'll tell you when I get it on my channel.

  • Pretty good videos dude if you keep it up when you get older you probably be better tham a lot of other people out there. Some of my friends made fun of me when they find out bout me 'playn with sticks' as they put it if that happens when you get oldet dnt let it change you. You'll get way better with age good luck

  • Millions of good hikers have used that "cheap aluminum" scout type kit. A few dents usually mean. the user is careless. This kit works and will provide light weight tools. Each item is useful for the novice or experiennced backpacker. Many hikers use only cup, pot, and skillet.

I have kits that cost big bucks, but the standard scout kit often gets the job done with many options. Learn to use the scout kit before you spend big $. You may not need it. Go light - do it right. stonenstrop

Each item is useful for the nocue or experienced packpacker. Many hikers use only the cup, the pot and the skillet. I have many kits that cost many dollars more. But the standard scout kit gets the job done with many options. Learn the BSA kit before you spend big $ - if needed. stonenstrop

  • try a rubber band. that

's cost effective and what i use

  • Good job explaining the differences.

  • You did a good job on your comparison. I had a cheap palco mess kit very much like the one you displayed when I was a kid in the seventies. that kit sucked but it worked and my family didn't have much money so I took good care of it and I used it till I was an adult. I boiled water in it and cooked all sorts of things but things always stuck to it. When I was in my twenties I bought a good sturdy peak one solo stainless kit which I still use today and I'm 48 now.

  • I have tried both of these kits I liked the Coleman stove I felt it was pretty sturdy. Recently I have been told to try the Jet Boil stove and I love it. It's expensive but to me it pays for itself. At night when I go camping I love to boil hot cocoa before I goto bed it helps my inner core to stay warm. But I hate taking out the multiple stoves to do it, it takes to long. But since I got the Jet Boil its seconds.

  • I meant nice

  • Very vid :-)

  • M.S.R. common stainless set from rei or others like fishermans marine $29 stronger than alum.

hardly heavier than titanium, fits coglans esbit stove between top of small pan and lid ^_^

    has toolbox style latch !

  • i have both of them kits i use the first one as a frying pan thre the little pot away cause hed the bbig pot set and they work well together

  • They make a SS BSA kit. I got two from Walmart. I put water bottles in the Coleman pots kinda like a German canteen set. Trying to find right size pouch to fit them. Fox and Max make water bottle carriers. And the Coleman handles will get hot enough to burn you.

  • Look into a Ukranian Army mess kis. I payed 30 bucks on ebay for mine and love it. Canteen and pot.

  • What is that music? I LOVE IT! What is the title and artist?

  • Nice review, what's the weight difference?

  • @Doggieman1111 Not to sure. A lot.

  • I wish they made the boyscout style kit out of the stronger metal of the Colman as I prefer a flat style in my pack as to tall and round. I think that would be a winner in my book. One reason being, keeping the flatter style level on a fire is much easier. Another is in the pan style you can fry things side by side, not so much in the tall style. Nice video, ty.

  • @unclearless I agree man. Check out the MSR cook pots. I think that's what you (and I) are going for.

  • @unclearless its not a coleman, coleman mess kits are garbage if you like slim shape go for a palco

  • i use a Stainless Steel Cocktail Shaker i picked up at a yard sale for 5 bucks just put wire around it to hang it over a fire for cooking stews or steaming vegetables and always have a Stainless Steel water bottle with me to do my water purifying ;) i never use aluminum or anything with non stick coating i dont know why but i just dont do it good video by the way bro keep up the good work man

  • Great comparison! Something I didn't know but learned on "Mess Kits.wmv" by BlackOracle69, is that there is a big difference between a mess kit and a cook kit. The Boy Scout mess kit isn't designed as a cook kit, as it's thin and food sticks. It's much better used as a mess kit! Your round, K-Mart cook kit looks to be a much better kit for cooking and eating from.

  • That Boy Scout style mess kit is WW1 style junk. The coated mess kit is trail worthy. The heavier aluminum will cook quicker. Use a green scratchie pad to scrub nonstick aluminum.

  • why is the camera shaking?

  • Dave has a somewhat unique vocal cadence and you are subconsciously imitating it. It's nothing bad, it's completely natural. It's kinda like picking up a British accent after you move to England or talking in a southern draw when you are in Alabama. I can definitely tell you watch his videos =) I do too, I like the Yurt ones... I also downloaded all the dual survival episodes and am watching those.

  • @Ockall Haha, I guess after a couple hundred of his videos I would pick up a few vocal similarities. You're right brother, I can't get enough of the Yurt! I really enjoyed his overnight scout that he did with Jeremy yesterday, that one was good as well. I just watched 2 episodes of Dual Survival last night too!

  • You are picking up subtle Dave Canterbury speech patterns - better stop watching his videos. lol

  • @Ockall Haha. Like what kind of patterns? I do watch about 5 to 10 of his videos a day so, you might be right!

  • great video, I havent yet seen this mess kit

  • LOL! WALMART MESS KIT IS BETTER THAN NOTHING!

  • I meant one quart.

  • Can you tell me if a one pint paint can will fit inside of the iodized mess kit?

  • Soda crystals can clean your pots up quite nice

  • Dont use steel wool on your cook set,use the green scrubby..

  • @dustmudder I had concerns about whether or not steel wool would be too abrasive. Turns out I still can't get some crap off even with steel wool and there is no sign of the coating being anywhere close to coming off.

  • Bring all you want, carry all you bring.

    Continue to improve your process.

    Critique your mission.

Eliminate one item, Save one ounce, Do it faster.

  • Nice comparison.. Id keep both sets tho. The better one for cooking and coffee and the cheap just for eating out of

  • @martialartist34, I'd loan the GI mess kit to a junior hiker, then I'd show him my Snow Peak TREK900 Ti Cook Set, Spoon, alcohol stove, fuel, ferro rod kit, I put together that weighs under 12 ounces, in the bag.

  • @borderraven Then I'd show you my MSR Stainles Steel cook pot and a ferro rod. All that I need right there. Then I'd let the junior hiker use it.

  • @BraveTheWilds, Right give the junior hiker a list. On the top of the list tell them the bring all you want, carry all you bring and let them pack their packs. Give them the heavier gear. End of trip, l tell them to unpack their pack, and decide what to bring next trip. Next trip teach them ultralight hiking.

  • @borderraven Or tell the junior he can only bring 20 things. He'll be a pretty smart packer, bring only what he needs, and I guess he would have taught himself ultralight hiking.

  • i have the same kit as on the right exept made by a different compony DO NOT BUY IT IT IS A PIECE OF SHIT!!!! i used mine ONCE and then i went out and bought a different kit DO NOT BUY!!!!!!

  • @171RAVEN Haha, would have to say I kind of agree with you. Pretty soon Dick's is where I will be heading to buy Dave Canterbury's mess kit.

  • LOL! I have the same problems with keeping the lid on that little GSI type cookset, but if you take a piece of innertube and cut a half inch piece off it fits around the top with no problems. and it holds extremely well. also keeps the water out if you keep your spices and whatnot in there like I do.

  • @Ghillieinthebush Thanks for the comment, I'll try it out!

  • Very nice review, I wish we could have some of that rain here. : ) I have the coleman set and love it. A little post smut just adds character. Most of the time, I just use the two smaller pieces though and use the extra room in the bag for alcohol and a sponge. : )

  • @saradreaming I also keep my alcohol stove and steel wool in that mess kit! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate your support greatly!

  • The first one is very similar to the Boy Scout mess kit. I'm not much into mess kits. When I actually use one, I use my old MSR kit. Typically, if I need a cooking vessel, I will use my canteen cup, otherwise, I like roasting on a stick or baking on a rock.

I do however, like the teflon coated Coleman kit. Don't sweat the burn marks. If they do bother you, it will come off with oven cleaner. It will clean it and make it look new.

Bro, as always, great job on the review.

  • @Heavyb2u Thanks Brian! Actually I prefer a little rugged look on my equipment, it gives it character. And I agree with you, I don't use mess kits mainly unless I have a few friends out in the woods with me and we're doing some serious cooking. Generally I'll use a canteen cup and the tin cup in my EDC bag video. God bless Brian, I hope everything is going well with your tumor and progress has been made. I'll be praying for you.

  • Oh I might also add stainless seems to clean up pretty easy and has no need for a coating that will eventually chip, scratch or peel off over time

  • @donaldphinney I agree! Dave Canterbury's mess kit is stainless.

  • I have issues with aluminum even the hard anodized likes to fail when you need it. I would recomend either stainless if your on a budget, or if you need light and have cash got titanium. I like the look and shape of the Solo you have, but aluminum is garbage for the woods. try a msr stowaway pot goo.gl /T6yoW and a GSI cup goo.gl /ZJpFB you could get both for almost the same price as you coleman solo, the GSI will fit over your nageene and the msr locks closed rattle free.

  • @donaldphinney Thanks! I'll look into it. I would defintely agree stainless is the way to go. Soon I will be purchasing a stainless pot that Dave Canterbury uses as his main mess kit. I'm sorry I don't know the name of it. If you're an avid fan of his channel you will have seen it. Thanks for the comment brother!

  • @BraveTheWilds Another option I prefer to the cheap aluminum is the billy can. Pathfinder School has a video on "the common mans billy can" . I prefer to use the quart size with the bail handle (sometimes a little harder to find quart with bail handle) to the gallon size, but either is usually under $5 and a lot more durable and reliable than the thin crappier of the 2 cook sets you featured,....

  • @donaldphinney I have actually made about 5 or 6 billy cans with bails on them. It's a lot cheaper than 5 bucks, it's free!

  • @BraveTheWilds the new paint cans have a lining inside them that is nearly non stick, and the bails on them are a lot nicer than the ones I have done with bailing wire punched through a coffee can, and the lid on the paint can fits nice and tight and if you set something heavy on it can almost work as a pressure cooker. there are a few advantages to the new unused paint can, enough I think to warrant the few bucks spent, but I still think if possible it is better to go stainless or titanium.

  • Great video my friend. God bless. John

  • @snaponjohn100 Thank you for the kind words!

  • I like the coleman max solo cookset.I don't have a problem with the stuff sack as a way to hold it together, doesnt bother me.But I think mine is slightly "damaged",the lip has got a tiny dent on the lip of that largest pot, which actually keeps it all from falling apart when its all nested together, lol. After spending money on two cook kits,I have a tendency to use a stainless steel water bottle or home made billy can more now.

  • @ChannelTheron Thanks for the comment! I actually also don't use these mess kits in my main pack as well. I tend to stick with a canteen cup and a tin cup. When I have friends in the woods with me or if I'm doing serious cooking I will definetely bring these with me.
