Once upon a time, my NES was fucking up so badly that it would glitch up and give you random weapons and shit you didn't pick up, like the sweater, or a pitchfork would just appear outside.

That was the only way I was able to beat this game, and I couldn't even see what the ending said, cause the screen was all scrambled. Good old NES games for ya.
