To maintain that level of humor in that tense a situation speaks to his level of commitment and dedication to his job.

I like this video because it shows how the passengers and crew appear to have acted calmly and swiftly to get people to safety once the plane hit water.

Seriously, within 1 minute of when the place hits the water (once the camera zooms in) there are already dozens of people standing on the wings, and inflatable life rafts in the water.

The ferry's were very quick in getting there too. Applause for human-kind all around.

You know how the plane pivoted when it went in the water? Me reckons that happened when the left engine snagged the water. If future water landings are anticipated, perhaps a new safety feature for planes (akin to the watertight button on this one) might be a feature for dropping the engines. Plane doing water landing with no obstructing engines would suffer far less structural stress and add to the desirable probability of the floating airframe remaining intact. It's just good engineering

As a pilot, I'd have to say your arguement has merit. As a student of aerospace engineering, I'd have to say it's possible, but you'd be looking at a major increase in cost on the entire fleet. Retrofitting alone would pay for a few more planes. Maintenance of a detachable mounting system that could support the thrust over an acceptable period of time would be a nightmare not to mention risk of premature release or failure to release. Not bashing you, just too costly and difficult in my opinion.

Are not the B-52's wings held on by only 2 large bolts bearing the attachment load? Amazed that 1549 didn't sink, read about the airtight switch. That's not cheap. Blowoff engine retrofits would be costly, but if no more than 3 or 4 explosive shape charges could be brought into future designs, it might avoid having to scrap the stress twisted airframe. Rare incident/risk cost, though, and fuel cutoff would be a big factor. Non-incendiary charge?.

Not sure how the BUFF's engines are attached. I'm basing my thoughts on the amount of MIL jettison failures there are. There aren't too many premature releases (remember that F-18 pilot who dropped that practice bomb into an apartmet bathroom and didn't realize it had lost it?). The MIL uses explosive bolts to release weapons, but too be effective as a powerplant jettison you'd be replacing them left and right to ensure they are good, bringing that dirty little cost factor back. :)

My F-18 comment got me side tracked. :) What I was going to say about the explosive bolts failures was, if one engine failed to release or only partially released, you'd have asymmetric drag making the really big glider even harder to control (imagine having an uncontrolled slip on final...yikes!!). Like I said, these are just my thoughts, I'm not trying to argue with anyone. If there were some kind of manual actuated control (like the landing gear has) it could be quite feasible.

Actually, it's possible... or more likely, you rush to judgment. It might be hard to remember now, but the Twin Towers were far taller. Remember, they were the tallest buildings in the U.S., giants among skyscrapers. The Time Warner Center towers, which you see there, are only 55 stories tall... much shorter than the WTC.
