Omigosh, I've never known that they did this--I'm one of Lorin Rowan's fans and have not had a chance to really check out Mr. Skaggs' music a whole lot. WOW. His voice is clear as a bell and this is just beautiful. THANKS FOR POSTING!
I bought Ricky's CD with this song on it because of this posting. It was good, but this recording, with the orchestration behind it, particularly the openning, is so much better.
As a musician who is trained in both classical and bluegrass, I appreciate the way you kept the integrity of both styles intact. Lovely arrangement. Ricky and the boys really stepped up to the plate, too. Thanks for posting.
Used to stand outside the window at my homeplace church on homecoming..the adults would be inside listening to downhome gospel...the songs would stop me in my tracks from... playing....This stopped me in my tracks today ...just like back then
Funny, the audience PAID to see this music...Bluegrassers get to play/hear this music, all over the country, at countless jams (house, city squares, etc) .
And Ricky is just bringing the tradition we grassers enjoy to ya'll!!
Funny, the audience PAID to see this music...Bluegrassers get to play/hear this music, all over the country, at countless jams (house, city squares, etc) .
One of my favorites. If you are the person who did the arrangements for this piece you, through the grace of God-given talent, did the Lord proud in honoring Him from your heart. Thank you and thank the Lord for you.
This is absolutely one of the most beautiful arrangements for a song that I have ever heard! And believe me, I have heard a lot because I love bluegrass (well, all music!) and have tons of old bluegrass albums and tapes. This chokes me up every time I hear it and I try to listen at least 3-4 times a week.
Who would have thought......Boston Pops and Ricky Scaggs. Totally friggin' awesome! It must have been a real treat for those in the audience that night.
Ricky & Ky Thunder, flat out one of the best Bluegrass concerts you'll ever enoy! When they're in your area, you'll regret it if you don't catch them live! Terrific!
David, where can I get a decent audio file of this?...or even an un-compressed video?...actually, I would love to have all 5 songs!!! Wonderful, wonderful arranging!!!
Everybody should hear this song at least once in their lives, it's simply a stunning masterpiece, those harmony vocals are out of this world, this is real music right here.
quantum dave, i think that you should totally put other songs from this CD onto Youtube. The CD is awesome, so i think that you should put just about every song on. I would listen to them :D
Totally dig RS and Kentucky Thunder, and I'm a major rocker/hiphop lover! The entire album "Soldier of the Cross" is excellent, and I weep everytime I hear "Seven Hillsides".
I, David Powell did the arrangements for Ricky Skaggs and the Boston Pops Orchestra. This is one of 5 videos of this concert I have posted. Hope you like them!
I'm not sure why exactly, but this song always moves me to tears...the gorgeous harmonies, the simple power of the lyrics, or maybe the fact that Ricky Skaggs reminds me a lot of my brother, who is a gifted singer himself...whatever it is, I have loved this song since I first heard it
tuff to follow "buttholejones" but as "basketballjones" i feel it is my responsibility. Skaggs has always been a fav and Keith Lockhart of the Boston Pops has a feel on contemporary voices.
Such a great song, awesome performance here. It makes me think about all the mighty ministers of Christ I've known Taylor, Jerry, Mark, Rick, Billy -God bless you.
this has to be the most beautiful bluegrass gospel song i have EVER Heard...When they start out singing it sent chills down my spine! and such a powerful message behind it too... This is why i love this music and especially Ricky Skaggs
it really is.....God is Love and Forgiveness, he puts us in our place from time to time to show us this...but GOD IS LOVE....and he brings love to those who hate
i was just looking around for rickys songs and found this one and im glad i did ....thanks for having it up because i dont think i have ever seen it on here anywhere else ....have a nice day
I am a singer/songwriter. Vocal harmonies are my specialty and I can tell you this is very very good. The guy singing the high harmony is incredible. Whether your a believer or not you have to appreciate the beauty of this piece. The orchestral arrangement is a fine piece of work. I am very moved by this.
Hi mtnwest: A Ricky Skaggs DVD entitled "Soldiers Of the Cross" is available (I bought mine either on eBay or Amazon over a year ago) although it doesn't include the Boston Pops, it features a full Ricky Skaggs concert and showcases many gospel and bluegrass tunes. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it in the meantime, until PBS offers theirs for sale! The Soldiers Of The Cross soundtrack is also available on CD.
I tried to find this video to purchase however because of recording rights of the separate performers (Skaggs and Boston Pops) none seems to be available. What a shame. Hopefully it will be aired again so I can record it.
Thank you. When I first got the project I wasn't sure how I would deal with it. Instead of having the orchestra "back them up", I made them all a member of the band, and I was pleasingly surprised by the way it turned out!
You'd have to ask them, I wasn't there. I will say that a lot of these symphony players are pretty stoic, and many look down their noses at popular music. But I caught several members of the orchestra smiling, and the conductor Keith Lockhart looked like was having an especially good time!!
I think that to have the dedication to get to the Pops you have to LOVE music, so I would think that these players probably loved every minute of it. You don't get to this level by being a musical snob.
You did a fantastic job writing them too. Not to overpowering. Its in there and you can hear just enough to give it flavor but you can hear the bluegrass in it too. Again great job God bless.
wow is about all I can say...added this to my favorites..Love it..thank you so much for sharing...good message in this song...
