  • And it is exploitation by not paying the actors for their hard work each time a programme they are featured in is shown...And also bear in mind the amount of money these people got at the time was quite modest, and compared to the US and the UK it is way below average...They want to continue to sell the shows to overseas markets, then pay the poor bloody actors..And quite a few of the original artists from 30 years ago are dead now anyway.

  • I agree with this, performers here in the UK still get royalty payments when the shows they acted in are repeated on television or released on DVD...Many actors, especially women, have a hard time finding good long-lasting roles on television when they reach a certain age and in Australia they do not have the actors retirement homes and care facilities and it is wrong...Grundy's or Fremantle Media as it is now make a fortune from overseas sales.

  • This woman expects to be paid for a show that was shown over 20 years ago because she now has no money? whos fault is that? if your an actor or actress, go and get another job if you cant get acting sons and daughters was on years ago.

  • I guess a complication may be, if you pay people again for more release of the show would that include set designers, carpenters, technicians and other crew?

  • wonder if some of the prisoner cast got anything when the whole series got relaesed on dvd, I don't think any other Australian show has had the whole series released on dvd. So it is an interesting topic, YES they should get something

  • wish they would sort this out, were missing out on one of the greatest soapies of al time, wnat it in its entirety!

  • Beryl Palmer has aged very well IMO. I think they should get their dues. Another tight-fisted tv company.

  • Hated Beryl but yes paying them would be decent

  • @batbreath77

Why she was such nice character

  • I never liked beryl nor the atcress who played her, I like her even less now still they should get summat if money is being made from reruns.

  • I wonder how they'd work out the royalties. Sons & Daughters had such a huge cast...it was essentially an ensemble piece.

  • This is terrible! The actors in these shows SHOULD be paid!

I own many of these DVDs, including Prisoner Cell Block H, The Young Doctors, Sons and Daughters, Number 96, Return To Eden, Chances etc...

I get a lof of enjoyment out of these actors performances, and they deserve to be acknowledged...I am very shocked!

  • That's disgusting. At the time they were made the actors had no idea that the shows would seen more than few times. How could they know they would be seen all over the world and sold on DVD. No mater how little they make from the shows they should still pay the actors even if it is only 23 cents a DVD.

  • Why can't actors work after their acting career in a regular day job like supermarket, restaurant or cleaning like everybody else?

  • Leila Hayes is 67 years old and she has taught acting since Sons and Daughters...The others would be in a similar position and no doubt doing bits of work but they are being ripped off

  • The actors SHOULD get something!! I agree with booth2710. Those actors put their all into it (especially S&D), and loved working on the programme for Grundy. THEY didn't choose to end the series, Grundy did. So why should they miss out on all the profits - which I am sure there are plenty. Let's face it, S&D, Country Practice all still have a lot of fans out there! Look at the websites!

  • they should get royalties just for how bad they act....but that's what makes aussie soaps so good :)

  • They act well.

  • Hell, I'd give Beryl/Leila Hayes 50p for the wonderfully bad delivery of the line "How dare they.... RIP... US... OFF!" Classic.

  • With respect & not on anyone's side: if they sue, they'll lose, and have to pay costs. Why? There has not been a breach of contract. There are many cases where the small people were 100% likely to win a legal battle against a corporation, but the small people were too timid to proceed.

However, this is one case where the small people are very unlikely to win.

**Hm, I guess they're not so small as people, having once been stars, and now having so much support from fans.

  • No kidding, come on - PAY UP GRUNDY! It's disgusting. Sue the bastards. "Not making anything on the DVDs" BULLSHIT!

Actually, Leila Hayes looks pretty good!

  • where can you get hold of a dvd of sons and d would like 2 know...ta.

  • that's a bit embarrassing that leila is that broke that her daughter had to buy her house...although i thought she was an acting coach!

  • With respect & apologies: a thought just crossed my mind: Too many of us are even MORE broke--we have no daughters to buy us a house. We will try to rent and work until we die. We worked hard, and honestly, but the rewards of our initiative went to the boss's friends. And we lost jobs because work was 'outsourced' to our black brothers who jumped at one-fifth the wages because they're still suffering from poverty caused by white colonization decades ago.

  • It is the skill and craft of the actors that have captured our imagination and fascinated us. It is the actors that have won our continued loyalty long after these shows went out of production. They deserve their royalties just as much as those in the music industrty. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS - I say GIVE THEM WHAT THEY DESERVE !

  • I've never really had alot of sympathy for actors who have been paid well in the past and not banked money for "rainy day" when they have had it rolling in - but I think it stinks that they do not get the royalties they deserve when these shows are rerun or released on DVD regardless of the intended market. It is the actors in these productions that have captured our imagination and fascinated us and it is through the skills of their craft that have won our continued loyatly to these shows.

  • For the entertainment Sons and Daughters gave us in England in the 80's they all deserve every penny they can get!! Good luck to them!

  • They desperve their loyalties. Loved Sons and Daughters
