Auto IK stands for Auto Inverse Kinematics. Which basically means that the position and rotation for the other bones are automatically calculated based on the bone you are modifying.
i don't waste my time with rigging bones anymore - i think the fun part is the constraint systems...i just run my meshes thru the mixamo auto-rigger (mixamo.com/upload_character). good tutorial tho.
Great tutorial it can still be used on 2.5 but will be a bit confusing for new users an update would be great, I would stress the modes a little more editing and pose mode in particular accessed with Tab and Ctrl+Tab. Also at the end it would be nice to prime people on the copy and paste for the poses this is a very useful feature. Select all bones in the armature with A while in pose mode and then use Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste them at different points in the timeline.

I've got a ninja model, and a set of bones, and as I was following this tut, I got to the part where you add the Armature modifier, but as soon as I do that, my model gets twisted and distorted. On your model, nothing changes when you add the modifier, until you move a bone.

@101spacer101 Alright, I got it. From Pose Mode, select the model, which will send you to object mode and then go to Weight Paint mode. Now you'll be able to select the bone with the right mouse button.
Hold Shift and right click the body and then the armature skeleton. Then ctrl+P to make a parent of , select armature. Don't know where to go from there.
When doing weight painting it wont let me individually select each bone for some reason and when i attempt to right click and select each one it takes me out of weight paint

I modeled a gun and I want to animate the clip to come out, but I aparently can't translate a bone in Blender! I can only rotate and, for some reason, scale a bone.
How do I get the armature to translate without it being a root bone?
@Acefangamestudio But then wouldn't it not move with the rest of the gun, and a hand it's in? It's part of a character model for a game. I would have to reposition it every frame, and with two seperate skeletons I have no idea how the game would handle that.
Hey how i can put multiple Bones i tried but when i put one new and do the same process the bones move the same part of the character i don't know what to do -_-'
Ok...so I made a robotic creature that has a tail on him, I set up an armature only for the tail with the auto IK on to animate the tail smoother, but only the first bone (Closest to the body) will actually animate. When I try to animate the bone at the end of the tail (Where I get more control from) it ignores the keyframes that i put in and stays at the last pose that i set. Any idea why this is happening?
@MagneticCrystal1 Ok, this is what I did to remedy the issue with the armatures on tails.
So I clicked the record button and every five frames I set a new tail pose and it automatically set the keyframe and pose. so try that and see if it works. I'm doing a painstaking fighting sequence with 2 Robots and the one with the tail has a spiked ball at the end that he uses to whip the other robot in the face. It's turning out very nice. Also using Vegas Pro to add health meters and text.
I'm having some trouble adding the modifier, the modifier box wont show up at all, I think it has something to do with the object i made being made out of multiple meta parts, do i need to join them together? if so then how? do i have to convert it into a certain object type? I really need some help.
in object mode select bones first then go to pose mode,then select(right click) the mesh/object,go to weight paint mode,finally select the bone you wish to be affected.....
When I press ctrl+tab, evrything goes black, so i can't see a thing. but in my second object when i trie to color it, almost evrjithing becomes red eaven if i use very small brush.
Press CTRL+A and click on the first option (scale and rotation) Should fix the first problem.
And the second problem, the reason everything goes red is because of how your model is. go into edit mode, select your model. Press W, then click subdivide. Do this 2-3 times. That should fix it. If you need any more help Comment back.
