yes this works, i  just shoved a netgear usb wifi inside of a metallica coffee cup,

although i did not carve a hole (the mug belongs to my friend angie)

i have the wire traveling though the mug but it still works fine.

i got about 2 levels higher because its not directional .

And to be honest it does work...i had all programs xept the high frequency ones ..i found in my basement an old TV antena..and compared..the pic. was even better on some channels than with the real antena..so this must work :D

Try changing the channel ur router in on. Default channel is 6 but they go from 1-11 so changing to a less crowded channel can block interference from other networks especially in an area where you have a lot of other networks around.

You've changed an omni-directional antennae (recieves signal from 360 degrees but weaker)into a directional one otherwise known as a cantenna. Pros are a higher signal strength but it must be pointed at the signal source.
