I agree, it is the editor of the video who is the problem. The conductor is very genuine. I hope the editor does take note of these comments for next time. I just love this choir
Musicians, please know that I "disliked" this comment because of the speaking throughout your performance, not because of your performance. Whoever edited this video should be ashamed! It's like covering a work of art in a black canvas and then describing it to us in detail.
Ugh, people. This was obviously a promotional video for the university, intended to be viewed by students interested in learning about the university's musical programs. It was never intended to be a perfect video of a piece of music for your viewing pleasure as if YouTube were some sort of PBS On-Demand.
.
Seriously, people should try better to check their entitlement complexes at the door.
Indeed annoying to narrate over the music. Also, what a strange world we live in. Here 'mass' music is being sung by a secular school in what looks to be a non-Catholic Church. Good for them, but why is this type music NOT in Catholic masses any more? Why is banal, trite immature music not of liturgical nature virtually banned from mass, but found in non-mass settings?? Very wrong !!
Yeah, Catholic ritual music since Vat II is an embarrassment (at least, I think that seems to be your point). We will never recapture the glories of Haydn's Esterhazy masses or this by Mozart.
@MrLamontSanford, if you actually want an answer, here goes. If you just wanted to gripe, well, I guess ignore this.
.
Worship is not performance. While it is occasionally appropriate to include such performance pieces in worship, the participation of the believing community is of paramount importance in the Mass. If you know a congregation that can collectively perform the Mass in C Minor, let me know. Until then, your complaint sounds rather, well, banal, trite, and immature.
@sightergoliant I know, I should just shut up and put up with "with 'We are the World' style music at mass my whole life and be 'non-judgmental.' I don't need a lecture as to what worship is or is not. Figure it out -do you think I really meant every parish can or should have Mozart masses? How about this one: how about actually follow ALL the POST-concilar rules and standards, MINIMUM standards, set forth by Rome, which can be done with 1,2,3, people singing, but almost NEVER are, on purpose.
@MrLamontSanford. I am, of course, not entirely opposed to your complaint about "We are the World" music at Masses. I find much of the folk mass music movement not personally satisfying or spiritual.
.
But some people have found solace in that music, deep meaning, and a reason to attach themselves anew to the church and its worship and mission. I know people who think Palestrina is the only acceptable church music; that Mozart is noxious popular music, without artistry.
@sightergoliant Go read 'Jubilate Deo', by Paul VI -the MINIMUM repertoire of Latin hymns and Gregorian chant which should be a part of the Catholic mass, 1970 Missal. MINIMUM. Gregorian chant and Latin should have 'pride of place' in the Roman rite. 'Pride of place' -sound like what you see every week in a typical parish?
@MrLamontSanford. Odious musical purism is uncharitable. I love Gregorian chant. I have spent significant portions of my spiritual life in monasteries using Latin and Gregorian Chant. But your presumption to speak for what is "not liturgical music," strikes me as arrogant. The church has musical jewels in its crown, developed over ages of human history. Perhaps "We are the World" music needs some time to develop in a similar fashion; blanket pejorative is unhelpful.
Speaking through this performance is an outrage. The speaker is an obvious ego maniacal twit. Very disappointing! The musicians and singer should demand it be redone. They sound great but my nerves are shop putting up with the insolence.
I lasted about five minutes. A real shame to ruin this.
The conductor (who is the "twit" providing the commentary) had no control over how this video was edited together. I bet the film makers just interviewed him, asked him to talk about the piece (which he is very clearly passionate about), then put it together as they saw fit. It's not like he sat in the back and talked thorough a performance! Blame the film editors, not the speaker.
I have to agree with others that the speaking during the performance really doesn't work here. It is very distracting, and seems to hide weak spots in the performance. The production may want to create a documentary feel by these interjections, but to do that you don't put the whole performance in and randomly intersperse mostly unnecessary comments.
Otherwise, it is an excellent student production, with most of the soloists being quite good for their level.
There is an information tab provided by youtube for author to provide additional information regarding a piece of work.
Booklets are usually provided during a real concert just for that purpose.
I can accept commentator speaking before, or after the performance, and often, such comments will make a piece of work more interesting and sometimes, neccessary .
But continuous speaking during a performance such as this at Northwestern University, in unheard of and disappointing.
I would like to see you pull together something like this and have to perform for such a long time. We are only human, and are bound to make mistakes. What this truly represents is the true divinity in the art form the human race has created that is music.
Sorry, but sloppy solos. Maybe the pieces are too hard for them, but their high notes and simply excruciating to listen to and they can hardly sustain faster passages. Really sloppy.

Mozart did not write easy music, and this is a noble effort for an undergraduate community of artists and musicians.
