I think C-Town misunderstood. Lupe had recorded a different album originally with different songs. The vocals WEREN'T pasted onto pop production, the songs on Lasers were new ones, after the label denied what he originally wanted to put out. If I'm not mistaken, "I'm Beamin'" and "Shining Down" were supposed to be on the album (I might be wrong there tho).
But I agree that I think when Lupe saw the success of LASERS, it went to his head, and he decided to run with that sound.
Lupe is such a bullshit artist. There is now problem with changing your sound, but don't try to drag me along by saying "It was the label". Let me hop off if I want.
This is what these guys are saying. Lupe should just man up and say he changed his sound, don't bullshit us.
fotp is good especially for a mixtape, lightwork, soundclash in vegas, love life and death are all amazing songs. it's different but thats the whole point

I'm a huge fan of Food & Liquor aswell as The Cool but also dig Lasers & FOTP- i think his music is subjective, progressive and evolving. @LamarTaylor2k12 I think Hop would speak him mind, and Bill would still be caught off guard. Crooked maybe not. But, Crook is fucking ill and his mixtapes are better than many rappers best albums.
i was surprised when i heard that dubstep beat but he still sounded nice just the beat i understand its big at the moment but yeah weird thing is i kindv like sound clash in vegas i dont know
i don't know about yall, but on the Cool, he had some songs that i never liked. Hello Darkness or something like that. But i liked Lasers, just not as much as his first two albums and I liked his new mixtape, but yeah, I think Lupe needs to come clean and just say he likes the punk stuff and be done with it.
Wait...So because Lupe does story raps, obvious story raps, he is fake? I mean come on what about Slick Rick, or Outkast who did/do the same thing? Come on man.
Did you not listen to Words I never said, All black everything.State run radio.letting go??? IF YOU WANT TO CRITICIZE HIM FOR HIS BEATS DO SO WITHOUT SAYIN IGNORANT SHIT LIKE."HE IS FULL OF SHIT". you might not like tht electric shit but others do. that is why it sold millions! AND DID YOU EVER THINK THT MAYBE HIS BEATS R LIKE THT SO HE CAN TRY AND DELIVER HIS MESSAGE TO FOLKS THAT DONT REALLY LIKE THT HIP HOP SHIT TO BEGIN WITH?! i played these songs for class and everyone was fckin stunned!!
@InfamousAct Im not dickridin. all iam sayin is. he is still talkin about significant things in his music. and it is reaching out to millions of ppl. not just in the streets but also in universities n elsewhere. I agree wit ppl sayin he dumbed it downnn.. but he is still delivering. nd the techno beats might sound bad to some.. but if he can use it to expand his fan base. great for him. appreciate him for not giving rap AND blacks a bad image like other corny ass mainstream rappers
@salsabiljihad and thats cool i actually liked lasers but the thing is Lupe blamed it on the coperate thing which is a lie. They're not saying he's a bad rapper there saying he's good but he lied about the music thing its obvious he just needs to admit that he likes the beats and that'd be that
@InfamousAct But did lupe ever say he did not like this type of music? -- which would make him have to admit otherwise.. he said he was bothered by Atlantic.. I just dont think a rapper should be tied to one n only one kind of music. techno.. autotune.. whatever the hell it is.. it doesnt have to be some jazzy type of beats. if its reaching out to ppl.. and if the content is still strong on most songs.. than who caress. Unless content changed.. i don think he needs to say anything.
@salsabiljihad Dude ;upe said he didnt even like Lasers. There not saying that they're saying if he wants to make those types of beats and rap to that style then he needs to just come out and admit that he likes that type of music. but he hasnt he blames it on the record label so for that he is bullshitting us
To me FOTP is a classic mixtape.Thee dubstep influences are needed because now in hip-hop artist keep hitting us with the same beats. Also to be honest most rappers can't rap on different beats but lupe can
This mixtape is the Shit.No Dick Riding Cause i Hated LAsers. I dunno Seems Like Yall DOnt wanna Give Another kind of sound a Try i Guess But Everything Isn't For Everyone.
in replying to mikectown I just feel in the case of hip hop when a fan really connects with an Artist they almost want to A&R that artist career and how their music "should sound" and when that artist deviates from that "they selling out" no disrespect to DEHH for not liking the tape but yall taking x files conspiracy level cats like "I think he made Food and liquor to trick the hip hop audience" that's crazy and I think its reaching dude did what he felt at the time as a artist thats his job
But Lupe still that dude I highly respect. After listening to FOTP more and more I could care less about the production. Lupe was killing it. The Dubstep beats just kept the energy high for me. Thats my opinion. Lupe still one of the best in the game.
Hip-Hop is great, but not everybody likes that sound. He might just be utilizing his different tastes to appeal to more individuals, but still spreading that awesome content. So as long as he does not switch his subject matter on some dumb shit I'm fine. But like I said before you can't be a free slave and preach the truth. I mean you can, but they'll always be drawbacks. I prefer none that's all I'm saying.
Lupe how can you constantly address the world's problems, and say fight the power, but at the same time be under its control?....ATLANTIC. This man is only half of the revolutionary he can truly be. It's hard to take heed to someone's words when they constantly contradict themselves, but at the same time his intellect and skill compel people to listen because he's unlike any emcee. He's to fucking talented! A slave can't have fun on the middle passage that's a complete paradox. Get off the label
Lupe said in interviews that he didnt like the way the revised album was done. He fought it for a while then he gave up and said he was just gonna continue to write music. LASERS was supposed to be his 3rd album, it wasnt released he moved on to F&L2 which was gonna be his 3rd. Petitions came up and from that atlantic decided to release. So cuz of that Lu called it the ppls album so for the ones that liked the LASERS sound he did this mixtape for them. We will see if he changed when F&L2 drops
Also, he wanted to be a drug dealer until it got real. Re-read that whole Chilly story. I don't know if I ever changed my opinion about an artist more than I did with him.
You guys just got a new fan. Thank @theneedledrop . Nice work on this review. Lupe is more worried about his Lamborghini collection. He saw that Lasers made money and he probably will never go back to F&L or The Cool until he's done making his paper.
Lupe has said that Lasers went through 3-4 phases, listen to Shining Down, I'm Beamin, What You Want, they were supposed to be for the OG Lasers, and the production is different from the current version of Lasers so even if Atlantic had little to do with it they still were involved, and Kick Push's real meaning isn't really what you guys explained it to be...do your homework before you start reaching like crazy. But I do agree that Friend Of The People wasn't good, let's just hope F&LII is good.
Lupe on the wrong label rt Alantic Records. It sad but true. Lupe need go to another label fan of his music. New mixtape was very lyrical the sound did catch me off guard.
also i actually liked friend of the people i loved the beats on it but i like electronic and house music anyway, its no way as cheesy as lasers which i cant listen to at all cause i hate it so much and its just way to poppy
damn why is c-town always right i kinda felt like lupe has always been pretentious like the way he dresses and with those stupid sunglasses its like he thinks hes the jesus of hip hop or something he wasnt like that back on food n liquor and you could kind of see him change after the cool came out
@deadendhiphop Guys I strongly disagree! This mixtape is no LASERS 2, doesnt sound like LASERS to me. The fact that you guys wan't the old Lupe sound is just being unfair, You got to let a artist grow and change and to call him a sellout, lier, or to make a wild theory about him is just not right. Lupe Fiasco is #FOTP, and #FOTP is 100% hip hop. DEHH! Love the reviews and convos keep up the good work guys!
cant WAIT for F&L2 to come out so all yall backtrack on everything you said in this. also that high five after you said double burger with cheese was funny as hell lmao
@mykectown but dude, I just re listened to kick push and Lupe wasn't trying to make skating out to be some deep emotional thing. it was a fun song and besides the point that Lupe made an excuse for his latest album, that might have just been where he was creatively. Do you think it's just bad creatively? and sorry for saying too bad to you the other day i was drunk lol
@tubularguppy I just think the song is hella corny. I know it was a metaphor, but, again, he could have used any metaphor. I think he used skating because it was uncharted territory. If you take song as a metaphor it's a weak one to me. If you take the song at face value it's still weak. But that's just my opinion. No one has to agree. And no need to apologize. I post shit drunk all the time!
kick push wasn't about "skateboading" though............ all my cats out there grinding legally and illegally the song was a metaphor the DEHH yall my people but its ALOT of reaching in this review......
imo Lupe overall is a dope mc and really goes in depth with his lyrics but deep down he is struggling to find a certain style of music that he can stick to at this point in his career. I don't understand why a good artist like Lupe has to change his sound when his chi-town-influenced sampled-based hip-hop sound from 06-07 was what really made him shine in the first place. Yes its good to experiment with different sounds but don't overdue it and try to pass this techno/dubstep noise as hip-hop.
I like the mixtape I don't care. Lupe should be labeled as Experimental Hip Hop because doesn't use trendy beats and drums most of the time. The boy can rap that is too obvious but I like this. I understand why a lot of people dislike this mixtape.
I don't have Food and liquor but I have that cool and I can listen to The Cool continuously over and over throughout the day and not get bored.
I was a fiend for F&L and TheCool.. Seen Lupe in concert like 8x during those 2 albums. He started to slowly switch up his shows with some weird ass beats/songs and after a while I just stopped going. I only fuck with 4 songs on Lasers. I listened to FOTP once (skipped on EVERY track) and deleted that bullshit.
You know what I don't understand about the Kick Push shit? Why is it okay for people to lie about killing nigguhs, fucking bitches, having money, and all around exaggerating their wealth but it's not okay for Lupe to make a song about skateboarding with a social message tied into it even if he don't skate? That's corny, but artists lying about their lives isn't? Really?
But with that said, I agree about Lupe's current state, and even though I did like FOTP I do feel like he lied about LAZERS.
In my opinion this puts Lupe at 2 strikes. Friend of the People had its bright spots but I agree with most of what you guys are saying. I'll save my last opinions for Food and Liquor II.
damn I love yalls channel but what's up with a DTMD review? I would love to hear yalls opinion on that album. those dudes are doin somethin different enough approach to hiphop that iam sure it would be a great review.
theres nothing wrong with dubstep lazers had kinda euro housey type beats the mixtapes more dubstep in uk dubsteps very popular and im quite fond of dubstep i dont think dubstep is as big in the us as it is in the uk tho i dont mind the mixtape
I couldn't disagree more! I thought this mixtape was dope!!! It actually didn't remind me of Lasers one bit! I am actually really suprised at this review!
Lupe shines with his lyricism & His content is what drew me to his music & is pretty much going to keep me listening to him. For me..Lasers was 25/75 for me..its only a few songs that I liked and the others just wasnt doin it for me. I do think that Atlantic did somethin to Lasers to steer it cuz songs did get taken off that he used on stepping Lasers tour. FOTP, ya he spit over a dub beat but for me, he lyricism saves his songs nowadays & thats what I focus on with him.
Lupe actually said in an interview that his message isn't as deep and intense as Immortal Technique lyrically. Lupe doesn't know what to do creatively. He was always on that Kanye, Pharrell, Tribe type of vibe but he was always looked at as second tier in that lane. He doesn't have the best hooks and his flow isn't that engaging. He has the talent and influences but he doesn't have the taste to put it together.
Lupe is still real, He is branching out, He even said he was getting into dubstep lately he admitted it, only a 1/3 of it is electronic rest is old Lupe - He is still imo one of the best lyricist this decade...Food and Liquor II is going to be a blend between FnL and The Cool. Also Original Lasers was recycled and thrown out - Real Lasers would've been stuff like Shining Down, What You Want and Im Beamin. I respect your review tho nice job as always!
FUCK these guys! How they gonna make a vid about my fave MC boo Lupe based on opinions and not facts? Why didn't they call Lupe and ask him? He woulda talked to them and told them everything! He's a friend of the people! These guys are stupid! Ole college attending gay ass hairy nut face fuckas! I bet they wear argyle socks and drink chai tea and shit! They don't know hip hop! I love Lupe and they should too! Here's a rhyme 4 dat ass: If you don't like Lupe you must be gay! Lupe all day, bitch!
he always pushed the boundaries lyrically and he's experimented with techno/dubstep sounds the past few years and made a rock album as well. it's only natural he'd want to push the boundaries with his music. if you don't like it, that's cool, his lyrics have been subpar for him on Lasers and FOTP, but F&L2 will be the style he came up on with SoundTrakk on the boards. the people in this vid don't seem to be so bright
Really generalized opinions, but logical. All-in-all I thought this was pretty on point, people who love these releases are going to love them because they're hipsters or something and didn't know lupe before, they just knew that he was good before because people who appreciate the music know its good, so they will come to you acting like this shit is hot when they probably only listened to a track or two.
i feel like even when lupe drops bad projects like lasers and fotp(fotp wasn't as bad, but still), he at least will give you some songs that give you hope. all black everything was a fantastic song. and friend of the people had that san francisco song, double burger with cheese... i feel like there's still hope for food and liquor to be a return to form
I agree with you guys on this one, I'm a fan of Lupe's first 2 albums but lasers was shit and this mixtape is unlistenable to me, i can't even get to the lyrics cos the beats are offensively bad.
@lwjohnson94 yea that intro is tight...hope he doesnt ruin it with something like.....(prod. by Skrillex) lol no offense to skrillex fans just making a joke about the dubstep beat Lupe's been using
Also, this is a prime example of why hip hop is dying...EVERYBODY is too damn judgmental when it comes to hip hop! Rappers have to dress a certain way, rap over a certain kind of beat, have certain kinds of hooks etc...NO matter how DOPE your music is..if it ain't what ppl think it should be, they're gonna talk shit & discredit whatever you do. THAT SHIT'S WACK AS FUCK 2 ME!!!! Ppl talked shit about Andre 3000, & Kanye West when they switched up their style to. Smh. This world we livin in...
EVERYBODY's talkin bout "I wanna hear this from Lupe," "I want him to make music how he used to"...but if ya'll bought his shit when it dropped...he would've done better #'s!!!! Like it or not, Lasers was a #1 album becuz his REAL fans went out & bought it to support him & what he stands for. An asshole can make a noise...but doesn't say a word..this review along with MOST of the Lupe bashin comments are NO different. NOBODY has said anything of value & credibility yet. Jus shit talkin
@MonteCarlo4eva "but if ya'll bought his shit when it dropped...he would've done better #'s!!!! Like it or not, Lasers was a #1 album becuz his REAL fans went out & bought it to support him & what he stands for"
Please explain to me how that statement makes any sort of sense. These guys made some very well thought out and valid points. Just because they're not sucking Lupe Fiasco's dick like his stans do doesn't mean that they're "jus shit talkin". Don't be so retarded.
@MonteCarlo4eva Lasers was #1 because his REAL fans bought it thinking it was gonna be as good the previous 2. stop trying to defend his bullshit since you're so full of it your damn self
This video in NO way, was cool, fair, or in good taste. I understand everyone has their own opinions but when u speak your "opinions" as if they're facts it's a problem. NONE of ya'll spoke with Lupe to confirm why he's doin what he's doin. He's not selling out jus cuz he ain't makin albums/mixtapes 2 please ya'll. I for 1, LOVE Food & Liquor, The Cool, & FOTP! Then again, i don't listen 2 music from ANY artist, expecting it 2 sound a certain way...but i do expect it 2 be dope...& FOTP is DOPE!
@jayflysociety101 I don't care about their subject matter.. Sure Kendrick has more.. Los still has meaningful songs though. Los created his own style of rap that's fucking insane. He also is a way better lyricist and has a better flow than Kendrick. By far too. This shit ain't even debatable to be honest.
As far as the retirement issue, what about when he stated that contract issues wouldn't let him retire? And the "I'll stay in it for the fans" references in Beautiful Lasers
@Cptkirk94 i wouldn't think so. Both of them were at Occupy Wallstreet a couple weeks ago and it seemed like they were chillin and showing respect towards one another and overall being just normal people having a convo. Even though Tech might be more political than lupe he definitely respects his music. (i know this has nothing to do w/ the video just saying that there's probably no chance he'll ever make a diss track to lupe lol)
as a FORMER devout lupe fan...i mean i was a freaking advocate for this guy..i started having suspicions..about him..but i'd blindly disregard them..50 billion people can say they don't like this or that without giving it a chance..but you all gave VALUABLE reasons for your dispositions..instead i was blindly running around with this shit JUST because it was lupe...i REALLY WANTED to like this..but after hearing you guys discuss it..i feel like my eyes have been opened! thanks..
I disliked this video, most times I enjoy DEHH videos but, here's why:
I hate it when artists don't change their style at all!
My favorite Lupe album was The Cool. I still enjoyed this mixtape. Also I hate when people say so-and-so is not a "hip hop" beat because it's not cliche. Lupe is challenging himself and his listeners to try something new. The beat to Lightwork is just as good as the beat to He Say She Say just in a different way.
i think i speak for a lot of people when i say that there is slight difference between today's radio electro-pop and the beats that Lupe used on this mixtape. Artists such as Justice and M83, that were sampled on FOTP, might sound drastically different to the soulful instrumentals that were all over The Cool, but it doesn't mean they should be lumped in the same category as the shit on lasers.
People, people, people...please ignore this Crab @MrCrownmeking11 lol, he literally just joined youtube today to go back and forth with ppl...Now on the count of 3 everybody give him your last lil bit of attention that he wants, then chunk the deuce up to this freggin guy, lol...really dude
Lupe didn't fall off. He never was there. Pure hype...Pretentious, his boost never came from the streets but from those masquerading to gain access. Props for finally realizing it.
his lyrics will probably never go down hill. he just needs some better production. when you go from a sample like "daydreamin" to the knock off dance beats on this i just cant handle that. even his last mixtape enemy of the state had great beat selection so i dont understand what hes up to. lets hope he steps it up on his next release.
the thing about lupe is he acts like he hates hiphop and if atlantic made him put out lasers why is he even on a label lupe has a big enough fanbase to be independent if he really cared about his sound that much he would of signed to no atlantic it just proves lasers was all HIS music
@dmdpro5 Like, i don't know how much you know about the music industry but u can't jus say "hey, i'm leavin the label so that contract, u can shove it up your ass." It doesn't work like that. Lupe has to finish his terms under atlantic first...he has 2 more albums to do. & correction, he said he "USED" to dislike hip hop, NOT hate it. Also,he put out 2 albums wit atlantic that sounded totally different than his last one so obviously he had no clue they'd want him to change his sound.
I get why people are so disappointed with this mixtape, but honestly I like that electro/house kind of music so I gotta admit the mixtape wasn't a total disappointment to me.
@MrCrownmeking11 so funny how dudes act so tough on youtube comments. Did you really have to talk to her like that bro? That comment was not called for at all.
@beezy430 man what u think about that dumbass move my detroit pistons did ? they sign prince to a 4 year deal..instead of trading him for some young players
@beezy430 do you know what's the song you guys used on this episode ? I went to check all the Pajozo beat vol.1 and I wasn't tripping it wasn't there.
@MrCrownmeking11 ME 2!!!!! I jus can't support ANY1 that'll bash & accuse ppl of opinions..not facts. They "THINK" Lupe's actin. I'm an artist, so i understand that it comes a time where we wanna do somethin different. Lupe has grown as an artist, 2 me, FOTP was dope...it was different, but it was dope still & all. & ppl that are quick 2 jump on the bandwagon are gonna do just that & try to find ways to say Lupe's selling out but i been a fan since day 1..i see/hear the same guy
@Naomi468 Muslims have Jesus as an important person to. He's one of the most quoted in the Qur'an. However, Muslims don't think he was son of God, or was killed, but they believe he was just a prophet. Anyways the cover is that way since Jesus was a friend of the people, and Lupe is also "supposedly" a friend of the people. So he's just being cleaver by having the cover say that with mixtape title.
I think C-Town misunderstood. Lupe had recorded a different album originally with different songs. The vocals WEREN'T pasted onto pop production, the songs on Lasers were new ones, after the label denied what he originally wanted to put out. @salsabiljihad and thats cool i actually liked lasers but the thing is Lupe blamed it on the coperate thing which is a lie. They're not saying he's a bad rapper there saying he's good but he lied about the music thing its obvious he just needs to admit that he likes the beats and that'd be that
InfamousAct 1 month ago
@InfamousAct But did lupe ever say he did not like this type of music? -- which would make him have to admit otherwise.. he said he was bothered by Atlantic.. I just dont think a rapper should be tied to one n only one kind of music. techno.. autotune.. whatever the hell it is.. it doesnt have to be some jazzy type of beats. if its reaching out to ppl.. and if the content is still strong on most songs.. than who caress. Unless content changed.. i don think he needs to say anything.
salsabiljihad 1 month ago
@salsabiljihad Dude ;upe said he didnt even like Lasers. There not saying that they're saying if he wants to make those types of beats and rap to that style then he needs to just come out and admit that he likes that type of music. but he hasnt he blames it on the record label so for that he is bullshitting us

in replying to mikectown I just feel in the case of hip hop when a fan really connects with an Artist they almost want to A&R that artist career and how their music "should sound" and when that artist deviates from that "they selling out" no disrespect to DEHH for not liking the tape but yall taking x files conspiracy level cats like "I think he made Food and liquor to trick the hip hop audience" that's crazy and I think its reaching dude did what he felt at the time as a artist thats his job

2dahiphop 2 months ago

You guys just got a new fan. Thank @theneedledrop . Nice work on this review. Lupe is more worried about his Lamborghini collection. He saw that Lasers made money and he probably will never go back to F&L or The Cool until he's done making his paper.
peaceatmosphere 2 months ago
Lupe has said that Lasers went through 3-4 phases, listen to Shining Down, I'm Beamin, What You Want, they were supposed to be for the OG Lasers, and the production is different from the current version of Lasers so even if Atlantic had little to do with it they still were involved, and Kick Push's real meaning isn't really what you guys explained it to be...do your homework before you start reaching like crazy. But I do agree that Friend Of The People wasn't good, let's just hope F&LII is good.

@mykectown but dude, I just re listened to kick push and Lupe wasn't trying to make skating out to be some deep emotional thing. it was a fun song and besides the point that Lupe made an excuse for his latest album, that might have just been where he was creatively. Do you think it's just bad creatively? and sorry for saying too bad to you the other day i was drunk lol
tubularguppy 3 months ago
@tubularguppy I just think the song is hella corny. I know it was a metaphor, but, again, he could have used any metaphor. I think he used skating because it was uncharted territory. If you take song as a metaphor it's a weak one to me. If you take the song at face value it's still weak. But that's just my opinion. No one has to agree. And no need to apologize. I post shit drunk all the time!

imo Lupe overall is a dope mc and really goes in depth with his lyrics but deep down he is struggling to find a certain style of music that he can stick to at this point in his career.

I listened to FOTP once (skipped on EVERY track) and deleted that bullshit.

@EMPOR5615 Oh, SLR was made before Lasers. It was a respond song to Soulja Boy so yeah.
jhonrobert96 2 months ago
You know what I don't understand about the Kick Push shit? Why is it okay for people to lie about killing nigguhs, fucking bitches, having money, and all around exaggerating their wealth but it's not okay for Lupe to make a song about skateboarding with a social message tied into it even if he don't skate? That's corny, but artists lying about their lives isn't? Really?
But with that said, I agree about Lupe's current state, and even though I did like FOTP I do feel like he lied about LAZERS.

The beat to Lightwork is just as good as the beat to He Say She Say just in a different way.
sidthekid2009 3 months ago in playlist Dead End Hip Hop Conversations
i think i speak for a lot of people when i say that there is slight difference between today's radio electro-pop and the beats that Lupe used on this mixtape. Artists such as Justice and M83, that were sampled on FOTP, might sound drastically different to the soulful instrumentals that were all over The Cool, but it doesn't mean they should be lumped in the same category as the shit on lasers.

dmdpro5 3 months ago
@dmdpro5 Like, i don't know how much you know about the music industry but u can't jus say "hey, i'm leavin the label so that contract, u can shove it up your ass." It doesn't work like that. Lupe has to finish his terms under atlantic first...he has 2 more albums to do. & correction, he said he "USED" to dislike hip hop, NOT hate it. Also,he put out 2 albums wit atlantic that sounded totally different than his last one so obviously he had no clue they'd want him to change his sound.

And can someone explain why he put the name "Jesus" on the album cover?? Aren't you Muslim, Wasalu??

@Naomi468 Muslims have Jesus as an important person to. He's one of the most quoted in the Qur'an. However, Muslims don't think he was son of God, or was killed, but they believe he was just a prophet. Anyways the cover is that way since Jesus was a friend of the people, and Lupe is also "supposedly" a friend of the people. So he's just being cleaver by having the cover say that with mixtape title.
