Have a look at my videos / channel - I had a similar noise in mine which I'm pretty sure was down to piston slap (based on a complete strip down). No harm to have a listen and make your own mind up. Mine went for years with the noise.

I would take of the fanbelt and powersteering belt and listen for noises, to rule out altenator etc. then open one by one injector tube while running and listen if the noise goes away, (it could be an injector stuck open), if the noise is still there I would take of the valvecover and check how tight the timingchain is and if the rockerarms are to loose. This is how I would diagnose this car. Good luck!

I had a knock like that in my 84 SD and turned out to be the vacuum pump.

I once had nocking after a tensioned the v-built, it was the water pump.
But I also heard it can be the vacuumpump (after +/-1980).

Any idea what your noise is? I have a very similar sounding noise, if not the same exact noise and I'm trying to figure it out as well.

@capflya
I asked around and it could be:
1. Chain tensioner broken. The chain tensioner could be pushed in, which isn't good.
2. Chain stretched so that the tensioner is at its end.
or
3. Camshaft bearing
4. Waterpump (unlikely in this case).
Next step is look at the chain through the oil fill hole with the engine running.
