When it came to Olympics, there will NEVER be anyone to top ABC and Jim McKay in terms of the art, inspiration, and human emotion and drama. McKay WAS the Olympics for many, many years. (Sorry, Costas and co. with NBC doesn't come close this. They are technical and information they're good but so BORING in comparison). This montage of video and Ode to Joy is superb, the BEST ever! And who can forget those Olympics with "Eddie the Eagle " !
Damn this brings back memories. ABC knew how to capture the majesty of the Olympics better then anyone especially NBC. I love how they would always play Ode to Joy when they finished their coverage of the Games.
At the end of this clip, the original olympic theme is played, not the re-done version. Does anyone know where I can get the rest of it? ( I don't like the new one now). I think this version was from the 1972 summer olympics and ABC used it up until after the 88' olympics.
They did offically finish in last due to the crash and they elected not to compete in the 4th and final heat. They were well within the top 10 before the crash.
the second half of the track reminds me of "A Clockwork Orange" when they have buddy in a chair with his eyes forced open watching film of the Nazi's....good times.
Fittingly, this marked the end of the 20-year reign of ABC as America's Olympic Network(CTV had the host broadcasting rights in Calgary that year). It's a tribute, not only to Calgary's games, but also to ABC's presentation of the Olympics over 2 decades!
I too love this highlight finale to Beethoven's 9th! I don't understand why they didn't do it at the end of Torino. If they think the closing ceremonies took the place of it they're crazy! Thanks for the video post!
How so??? Money?? What ever. There will never be another "Eddie the Eagle", or the Jamacain bobslede team. The battle of the Brians. The last olympic gold by the Soviets, in hockey. Katria Whitt, Elizabethe Manley, Alberto Tomba. Lillehammer was good, Calgary was the best.
The Jamaican bobsleigh team actally came back to both Albertville and Lillehammer, so they were'nt so unique to the Calgary games. And the many golds by DDR and USSR may have been won by doping -- I don't know, it's just a thought.
mmm, iagree with you sherisheri..but why was everything soo Laidback..mm,oh sorry..with this Olympic..do you know what i mean?,, i have never experienced the same thing in any other Olympic Game... :-) ps,im Swedish!!!
Oh my God, I loved this when I was 14. My sister taped tons of stuff from this Olympics and we would watch it all over and over again ... Thanks! :)))

Without a doubt ABC knew how to end an Olympics much better than NBC. Tonight we got nothing even similar to this from NBC. Thanks for the post.

ABC was the Olympic network that not even CBS nor NBC could hold a candle to it!
