why are the shafts always so narrow?! do you really expect to kill something with that? that think is not heav enough to kill a rabbit much less a deer. the width should be at least 3 inches. if you want to increase the power moddify the spear to fit an atlatl. you know nothing about what it takes to kill something with a spear.
@moofasa1211 if you harden the wood after sharpening the tip would be to brittle because it would be charcoal. the reason you sharpen after is to ermove the ash and burnt wood. the wood under neath is hard but its actually easier to sharpen the hard wood. trust me i know.
It works that way too but i prefer letting the campfire burn down and leaves red glowing embers. You wont risk that the spear would catch fire that way.
Sure good to know but a small metal fish spear is way ot easy to carry in a day pack to worry about making primitive???
becareful also as some state consider spears a firearm and you need a permit to have one, carry one and to have one you must have fishing license at the least.
i made 2 with two 1 or 2 foot sticks, tomorrow im making a longer one....wait...tomorrow is a school day >:( well i guess i found my next weekend project.
great! now kill a bear with it!! odds are its just gonna break as soon as u try to stab it XD 0.o yeah i know u guys are just gonna go like (wow this guy thinks he's gonna try killing a bear!? what a dumbass) good thing you've heard of humour! cuz i was worried for a sec 0_0
anyways, good methode with the hardening but another good way is to try flint knapping and if uve got a nice chunk of rock thats big and sharp you should place it on a fire to harden and tie it to the end. perfect spear!!
Try to find a tree that is not dead and cut off a good long branch and cut off all bark (this keeps it from roting) and then cut on side sharp and burn it till its kinda black and then smooth it out on something and then leave it in dirt for one hour (this cool's it down) and then there you go.
a better way to harden it is to bury the end at an angle before you light you fire..when you do light it do so over the ground where the stick is buried leave it for an hour or so and you done

it's interesting that everyone uses wood with a bunch of knots in it, I easily find fairly clean ash and willow everywhere's, why can't they find it?
flamedrag18 11 months ago
sharpen first then harden in fire no need to fire it before you carve unless you want it to be HARDER to carve the wood...lol

"Shave it off with your knife"
"So you can get down to the actual wood"
"So you can harden it and make it into an actual tip"
"I''l show you the next step"
"Were reheating it and doing the exact same all over again"
That's what she said.
