You could sort of do a kind of creepy VR film family tree with Dark City, Thirteenth Floor, all the way through Total Recall to Inception, Matrix, etc. Evolved into its own tech noir subgenre.

The soundtrack by Trevor Jones blends in with the movie so well. I cant imagine how this movie would of turned out without the work of Trevor Jones as score composer.
