  • (text limit reached, part 2) And that low voice is much lower than mature men's. But both my high voice and low voice have a narrowed range (the low voice couldn't even reach one octave I guess). But when I speak with the low voice, it doesn't drop to whisper, but with the high voice, I would suffer from sound drop to the whisper especially when I want to make a relatively low pitch. Also, there's a missing range gap between the high and low. Please help me if you know how to, thanks.

  • Could someone here help me with this? I have had some of these symptoms since I was 14, back when I was about to break my voice (I'm a boy). But due to me rapidly speaking and singing in high notes, it didn't break, though I found at that time it was much harder for me to reach high notes. And after years, I found it harder to speak fluently, with certain pronunciation dropping to whisper. Apart from that, I found I could also produce an ultra low voice which is extremely low.

  • I always give friends advice how to talk to girls but when it comes to it I can't do it myself because of this. I think I have it a little more than mild and I'm 24, this sucks it sucks!

  • Peak incidence is probably in 50's and 60's but can begin in twenties, and I have a few patients under twenty. Gravelly voice of being older is different from this disorder, which includes squeezing, strained quality along with "catches" or lost syllables--or drop-outs to a brief moments of whispering. Some public persons (who have acknowledged their SD) include Diane Rehm of NPR, Robert Kennedy, Jr, and Scott Adams of Dilbert fame.

  • it seems as if this can affect anyone at any age (given the commenters) but is this a normal part of aging? I often hear a lot of elderly folx talk that way. Personally, I've never heard of this until I looked up Lauren Bacall.

  • I started having problems at about age 30, this has been going on now for 2 years. It has ruined my life. I can't function as I use to, or socialize. It get's worse when I meet new people, I get really nervous because I know I will get starred at and funny looks. I have been to lots of Dr.s and none of them have ever been able to say " this is what you have". The ENT Dr. looked and could find nothing abnormal. So, he sent me to a speech therapist, I went for a couple months seen no change. Ugh

  • Thank you, Dr. Bastian, for sharing this information on SD. There is a very good change that this may be what I've been suffering from for the last year and I'm now awaiting a referral to an SD specialist. I needed to hear the different variations just to assure myself that this is what is going on with me. It's so frustration to be fine physically in every other way except to have your voice taken from, so I thank you again. I hope I can get good treatment for this.

  • I have SD unfortunately, it is the strangled kind of abductor type not sure which one it falls into it kind of sounds like the one described as "cry". It is painful psychologically. This was an informative video and helped with some clarification. Thanks

  • Thank you for recording all the variants. Based on the description, I thought I had this problem, but I don't sound like any of these. My voice is dry takes more effort than it should, but it doesn't seem to have this rhythmic issue.

  • My four year old son has been diagnosed with this, and it makes life very difficult for him. He has a really hard time communicating, and I can only imagine the trouble he is going to have when he gets older.

  • Does Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have this? Cuz he kinda talks like that.

  • Publicly acknowleged that he does . . .

  • can anxiety cause this?

  • Anxiety often amplifies symptoms, but is definitely not the cause. Worsening of symptoms can give the appearance that the problem is psychological or anxiety-related, when in fact it is neurological.

  • @christyj1978 I notice as my anxiety levels peak it get's worse. How, the hell does this even happen I wonder? It didn't hit me until 2 yrs ago. It's so embarassing, well it is for me anyways..

  • @wendee78 I have the same problem! I love talking to people but I am so nervous about my voice and how people will think of it, so I hardly talk, unless I really know the person. I notice I will think about my voice when I am talking to someone and that seems to make it worse. It feels my throat is closing and I willl stop breathing. My voice was actually alot worse 5 years ago and a lot of time people had a hard time understanding me. I still have issues but not as bad. I

  • @christyj1978 I have days I can kinda talk. I feel most comfortable around close friends & family too when I talk. If a stranger knows I have the problem and acknowledges it I am sorta ok with that too. But I still sound horrible, shakey, like I'm gasping trying to pronounce words, studdar etc.. I find myself having to think before I speak. Sometimes I just say forget and dont talk at all, it just takes to much effort and then you still getting that annoying HUH? Could you repeat that?

  • is it common to have sd at age 19 because i have a few of the symptoms, but it could be something else. Thanks

  • Very uncommon in your age group though not impossible. Overwhelmingly likely to be something else. Check with your personal ENT if it becomes an issue for you.

  • is there any way of overcoming this?...if it's not pathologic...

  • I have a friend who thinks that her MS has taken away her voice. She has never heard of SD and nor have her doctors. Thank you for imitating the the various forms. I will play vid this for her. Thank you!! thank you!!

  • Sorry I cannot reply to all comments, and can only weigh in on occasion. MS could affect voice too. But however rare and unlikely, it might be possible to have both disorders. It is not a bad idea for your friend to simply mention the dx to her neurologist or laryngologist. All the best!

  • I came upon this video while trying to find out about Bobby Kennedy's voice. The cry quality sounds just like him (to me, anyway)! I'm a singer, too, and now I know exactly where I'm going to go if I ever have a problem!

  • if you get that toxin stuff does it make you talk slow

  • Hey, did you know that long ago, people found that it was easier to travel on water than on land?

  • Your classic variants of both types seem typical of many ageing persons voices-does age contribute to alterations in the vocal cords and so the sound of the voice as it does to so many other bodily structures?

  • SD is more common in older groups, but can be seen in younger people too. SD is much more than a gravelly or weak voice, but has a lot of instability, stoppages, squeeze-downs, etc.

  • You have a gift there which can help people with voice problems. This video is superb. I also think your normal speaking voice will help people who are hard of hearing to hear what you are saying. I wish everyone spoke as clearly as you.

  • Happy for you. :)

  • This vid is awesome. I'm totally impressed with the Dr's ability to mimic so many different disorders. Interesting and informative.

  • omgosh it would suck if I had SD..

  • i have sd its a nightmare

  • bill clinton?!

  • wow yeah, i was wondering how that reminded me of, that's it. what about fred savage?

  • Thank you Dr. Bastian for sharing this helpful information. It's amazing how you can perfectly mimic the various forms of SD.
