Jean Brodie is my second favorite performance of Dame Maggie's (the first being The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne. If you haven't watched it, you definitely should! It's the best dramatic performance by an actress I've ever seen). This movie is just such a classic.
Rod McKuen singing the original soundtrack for the closing titles of the film, some versions of the film have the orchestral version at the end without the vocals. :-)
Saw this in 69' when i was 9...and It left quite an impression....Ive never forgot it , and still love and watch it to this day. A captivating film...caught it a few weeks back on T.C.M.
You saw this when you were nine back in 69? How'd you manage that? This film has frontal nudity and adult themes: i.e. teachers tapping their students, teachers having affairs w/each other etc.
I saw it on cable TV when I was in Jr. High back in '78/79--but it was probably edited even then. Definitely one of the best of the late 60s, and the period setting has made it timeless.
Interestingly, I love the movie, and I love the song, but they don't seem to go that well together. Rod McKuen's "Jean" is a love poem to what seems to be a naive but innocently winsome beauty. Maggie's Jean, although beautiful, is a manipulating, narcissistic, insecure coquette. The song captures the flavor of Edinburgh but maybe it's more the Jean Brodie that could have been but was "conqured" by the Marcia Blaine Dictatress.
Loves film yesterday I am now 13 since the 7Th of Feb

That thing she does with her hands at 1:13 is probably the most graceful thing I've ever seen in my life...

I love Maggie Smith as Jean Brodie, as Isadora Duncan, and as the Mother in Ian McKellen's Richard III.

Beautiful! How a song can enhance the warmth and power of a film. A wonderful marriage of sound and pictures.
