we named my dogs after the volcanoes haleakala, mauna kea, mt. kilauea, and mauna loa. my other dogs are named loihi, molokini, and belle. (their all hawaiian names except belle is french.)
My wife and I just drove up to Haleakala on Tuesday Sept 23 2008. There was real bad visibility due to the clouds that overshadowed Maui the whole week. We still saw the sunrise after 15 minutes of the first break of light. This is an awesome video..... try waking up at 230am drive to Haleakala and head down to Hana right after. Ha Ha Ha
Haleakala is the supreme spiritual experience. Most people who go to the MOUNTAIN do not believe that it is a mountain. They do not dress accordingly. All they talk about is the cold. What about the opportunity to touch the stars with your soul and feel the vapors of the universe's fingers on your face. Haleakala is an experience of supreme wonder and beauty if you will only look at it with your heart and soul. Yes it can be cold but so can the city when the wind blows
We just did this a few days ago, be prepared for cold weather, the wind chill is what will make you cold.
If it wasn't for the ranger station opening up at 5:30 I would of stayed in the van to keep warm Just dress accordingly and I'm from Buffalo N.Y cold is what I am used to
Demigod Maui was believed to have thrown his hook from Halekakala out into the sky. He threw his hook far enough to capture the sun. He pulled on the sun and slowed down its flight allowing the peoples Kapa to dry.
Nice video. A few years back when I went to Maui I got up at 3AM to get to Haleakala in time for the sunrise. It was so worth it, absolutely beautiful.
My wife and I went to Maui in Jan-02. The island didn't have much traffic because this was just a few months after 9/11, and travel was way down. Anyway... our visit to Haleakala was one of our most memorable times. Thanks for this nice video.
A true morning rise . May all mankind get the chance to see a Haleakala sunrise.
