Reyna was a superb player, the USA's best from what I've seen. As a Rangers it was a privelage to have him wear the famous blue shirt, though he should have stuck around for longer instead of jumping ship for Sunderland.
it was devastating when he injured his knee while playing for Sunderland, back in 2002, he was never the same after that. quite possibly deprived him from the immense future he deserved
it was devastating when he injured his knee while playing for Sunderland, back in 2002, he was never the same after that. quite possibly deprived him of the immense future he deserved
well as a rangers fan i thought reyna was great for us. in 99 and 00 he was part of that brilliant midfield with gio, barry and albertz. we took on the best in champions league and were so close to beating them. only valencia really beat us deservedly. in fact bayern and valencia ended up in the final in 01 and we were only just below them in terms of quality. reyna got injured though and never recovered for us but a great player in his time in blue.
Kind of you to say the I'm a big Gers Fan GO RANGERS!! My boy now is Beasley I love for Team USA as well. What can i say I'm American gotta show your boy some support.
Aye he was a soldier on the field , i 'll be honest when rangers signed him i wasnt happy at the thought of american soccer players playing for my team in the scottish FOOTBALL league as the usa doesnt have the best player production and especially back then , but ill tell all america he done yous & himself proud .
Now rangers have maurice edu & demarcus beasley in our squad , both first class players
as an englishman i have never rated any american player. none EXCEPT for claudio reyna. this man could have slotted into any european or south american national team. deserved to play for a big club side (sorry rangers and scottish league in general) and hugely under-rated. america never knew what they had, great great player little reyna. dont know how a player of his natural ability and calibre was born in the usa, a country that does not have football history or culture in its veins.
Claudio Reyna aka Captain America one of my favorite US players ever along with Clint Dempsey. the only thing i'm disappointed about in this clip was that they included too much MLS crap. i know it was from an MLS team but it's a tribute to Reyna, not Red Bulls. he played his worst in MLS
Reyna could've just played the ball out of the back first time. I'd rather lose the ball 35 yds from the opponents goal than 25 yds from our own. The US played better after he left. Wasn't it Dempsey that scored? Oh yeah, it was.
Then there was all the bad calls the refs made (not just against us, but other countries also), like the PK that was given for Ghana for the final score. So, its a bit unfair for Reyna alone when its their fault as a team, and especially since we were on the virge of being eliminated anyway since nobody on our side showed up to play. Hopefully that changes in South Africa, cuz I never tire of supporting my national team, I'm just fed up with them losing when they have the talent to win.
reyna was at sunderland and hes was a class player.. was guttered wen he left coz he was different clas.. not many americans are good in the premier league but he was mint
Sorry, that he's your idol. Take a look at some of the video from '06 WC. He caused several goals against the US, then faked a knee injury. O'Brien was their best creator in '02.
O'Brien was money in the qualifers and against Portugal when reyna was out, and even when Reyna returned he was good, when Reyna returned he played on another level that nobody else, with the exception of Friedel in goal, compared to. Hell Reyna was named on to the Fifa all star team after the tourney was over. O'brien (as much as I love him), wasn't. Reyna was the captain of the team for a reason, because he was the x-factor for us. O'brien hasn't quite reached that level yet.
In '06, Reyna shouldn't have been on the field. He caused a goal against Ghana by trying to dribble out of the back ( when he faked the knee injury). USA was a fast attacking team, but Reyna completely slowed them down. Thats why they didnt do anything in '06. He was a marking back in Europe
The US team in '06 was a mess as a whole rather thansome people bringing it down (Just like in '98). It's true Reyna has some fault for the goal vs Ghana, but then many others on the team also have to take the heat for not performing well (Demarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan especially) considering that we could have won against the Czech Republic if we had attacked (The US barely brought the ball past halfway being down 2-WTF?) and Italy if we hadn't had 2 ppl sent off.
They were down because of Arena. He got away from the attacking game and tried to impliment a control style, which wasn't our game. Also, Arena only used 1 sub in the Czech game. I blame '06 80% on Arena.
Popularity has nothing to do with it, cuz if it did, we would see the same players on the all fifa team 2 to 4 world cups at a time. The players chosen on the all fifa team for a certain world cup are chosen (by FIFA of course), based on their performances in that cup. Reyna was outstanding in '02, so he was named to it, which is an honor considering Americans get overlooked alot (no surprise, we are not a soccer power yet), Reyna earned that honor,It was not given to him just because of love.
O'Brien hasn't reached that level YET? O'Brien, mate, is out of football. He was a bust if there ever was one, be it down to injury or incompetence. Reyna was worlds better. I'd like to remind the others that Reyna was 33 in '06. For an injury plagued player that's well old (which is part of the reason why O'Brien couldn't even make a shite Chivas USA club at the age of 29).
A pity about O'Brien. In '02 he was taughted along with Donovan as the future of US soccer and while Donovan certainly has lived up to it, O'Brien has not. Shame...shame how injuries can de-rail a promising career. Anyway, no offense to Carlos Bocanergra (He is a good captain), but the US team just doesn't feel the same anymore without old faithful Claudio, leading the team out of the tunnel and more often than not to victory. Best player the US ever had. Thanks Claudio.
