An Arc De Triomphe winner and a Breeders Cup Classic winner going at each other hammer and tong!! The back to back Breeders Cup Classic's that Tiznow won in 2000 and 2001 are still 2 of the best ever run since the inception of the Breeders Cup races. He had to beat the "iron horse" from Ireland, Giant's Causeway, in 2000. Which he did by a head. Then had to come back and beat the Arc winner, Sahkee, in 2001. Which he did by a nose!! Speaks to the greatness of both the Euro horses, too. IMO.
The best US horses have been able to win on both grass and dirt. Secretariat and Barbaro are shining examples. In fact, after only two G1 wins on turf, Secretariat's jockey declared him superior on grass. How many UK or Euro horses have been able to win big races on both surfaces. Anyway, the US breeds the best - including Sakhee and Giant's Causeway. Always has, always will.
It's funny how the stupid Euros on here keep saying that Americans give races like the Arc "the swerve" because they'll get trashed there! (LO!!) Why the hell would US owners want to make the long, tiring and potentially dangerous trip to Europe when they have the best tracks and opposition right here?! - that's why the Euros send their stock over, only to get beat by the likes of Tiznow! Sakhee and GC are US bred and adapted well to dirt, but just got beat by a superior horse.
If euros are so good on grass and the should be........ the how come their record against american based horses is 13-13 (counting the high chap-johar tie for both) in the turf and 10-15 in the mile. not to mention 0-1 in the turf sprint.
Good Point but the breeders cup turf events are typically America's best turf runners vs. Euros second, third stringers but sometimes Euros bring thier best and they rightfully school us.
have you seen the 3yr old filly Zarkava from France, would destroy Big Brown. Europe will dominate the Breeders cup this year. Henrythenavigator and Ravens Pass for the mile. Duke of Marmalade for the Classic.Rip van winkle for the juvenile. Asset for the sprint and zarkava for the filly and mare turf. America listen up, you goin down!!!
i mean henrythe navigator wont get the 1 mile 2, but looks unbeatable over the mile. the duke is in the form of his life 5 g1s this year, big brown showed hsi true colours when flopping in the final leg of the triple crown.
The Dubai World Cup is held, as is the Breeders Cup races, out of sync with the European racing in general. The Dubai WC is held in March and the BC races are held in November. Its a pity they cant sort something out and get a World Racing Series that incorporates all the Major racing nations.
@frankschlanker, they held the Breeder's Cup in October a few times like in 2007 (Monmouth - October 24th and 25th) and 2008 (Santa Anita - October 26th & 27th)
you know, thats a possibility..but Tiznow held his ground and if giant's causeway had enough in him, he should've passed him..but i realize what you are saying..
He'd 'smash anything in the gate' if the Arc was run on dirt over 10 furlongs, might be a different story on turf over 12 furlongs.....not saying he cant win the Arc but he'll be stepping into unknown territory
Curlin is being pointed for the Arc, at least as of this writing. He'll smash anything else in the gate. I wonder what would happen if Big Brown was sent over, as unlikely to happen as that is? What's Europe's answer for Big Brown?
Gee, great reply carloalgatrensig (what the heck is THAT supposed to mean?) We have drug tests here in the US, too, in case no one went over there and told you. From that name you use, I have to wonder if YOU could pass a drug test.
So Rick Dutrow doesnt give all of his horses Stanazalol on the 15th of every month then?
If that were to be done in every other horse racing country in the world his horses would fail drugs tests. What I'm starting to wonder then is what drugs do the US tests actually try to find.
Do you have ANY clue what Stanazalol is? Or how it performs on an animal, as opposed to a human? That's the problem with Europe in general-always running your mouths with nothing of substance coming out. If it weren't for America, you'd all have German coming from those mouths.
To hopefully stop the argument between ludenwic and bigroan.
You have to remember that the European and American racing scenes are very different, The most valuable European races are turf races over 12 furlongs where as in the USA they are 10 furlong dirt races.
Maybe this year with the arc getting a new sponsor and it becoming the second most valuable race in the world after the dubai world cup some american horses might come over for it.
If any of the US horses mentioned had turned up at Longchamp for the Arc running right handed on turf they would have been completely and utterly annihilated -- that's why they ALWAYS give this race the swerve.
umm Dylan Thomas really showed how tough it is to win the Arc. I think he may have beat 1 horse. Dont get me wong i have much respect for europeans on grass but dont start trashing american horses.
It's obviously pretty tough to win the Arc because I can't recall the last time a US horse was even considered as an enterant let alone ran a decent race!
The bottom line is, that the European horses have managed to beat the US horses in their own back yard a damn sight more often thet you have done in Europe.
US horses are like fine wines...they don't travel well.
There was a horse back in 2002 named Hard Buck that went from the US to Europe and ran a really good 2nd in the King George and QE. The main reason US horses, even turf horses, do not head over to Europe more often is that the purses in Europe are comparatively low. Of course, Euro turf horses are far superior to US turfers. But even if there is a US turfer of such quality, why go to Europe for a million Euros when there is more money in Asia and comparable money against weaker in the US?
Annihilated-interesting choice of words. The following is a list of every Arc winner who has come to the Breeders Cup to 'annihilate' American competition:
American owned, American bred? Trained in England and that's all that matters son.
A European 'raider' is a horse trained in Europe, dosen't matter where it was bred, it's where it was trained that counts. Shows you know next to nothing about horse racing pal.
You've NEVER sent a horse to Europe an won a race of any value.
But the European have done in the US on dozens of occasions.
Guess those 5 Dubai World Cup winners don't count, in your eyes, eh? You are dilusional, son, and what you know about horse racing would fit neatly into a thimble. Get yourself a Beckham jersey and follow football-oops, forgot, Europe couldn't keep Beckham, either...
@Lundenwic Omaha, who won the Triple Crown in 1930 endured a long boatride to finish 2nd in the Arc, only one of many examples. The Jersey Act, for 36 years, discouraged NA from sending horses to Europe as well. Where would European breeding be without Northern Dancer?
Try to follow along this time-American OWNED-by Paul Mellon, and American BRED. Who cares where he was trained, does that mean when Euro-runners come over here they are American trained? Your logic is faulty and your comments a bore. Perhaps you should stop hanging on the internet all day and look into a job, get off the dole!
Americans don't race in Europe-no money. Dubai is as close to Europe as an American horse with any self respect would get. Oh, by the way, need I mention Curlin 5 minutes ago? Just another American who can't win abroad, right?
Fourstars Allstar won the group 1 Irish Guineas in 91'. Hard Buck ran 2nd in the group 1 KGQE in 2002. But over the last 10-12 years I agree that Europe has had the superior classic runners.
Man, I almost hit the 280,000 pick six that day. I got 5/6, including Tiznow, but it was that stupid Johannesburg that messed me up in the BC Juvenile. I had Officer and Siphonic. I couldve bought a house, instead I paid off my car.
Its so inspiring. i love this race becuase he beat all of the middle east horses after 9/11 and they cut it off but it says "Tiznow Wins it for America!!!" i love it!!
The comments here are hilarious! The level of competition was too high for Sakhee in America? LOL- He almost won the race! His stable mate Fantastic Light would have gone off as the favorite, but they switched him to the turf two days before the race. Fantastic Light shattered the track record that day clocking 2:24.3-won the Eclipse Award Turf. As for Tiznow- I agree with Beyer, he should have been Horse of the Year! Point Given never beat anybody and wasn't even on the board in the Derby!
NYCBladerunner: you name me one european champion horse and i will name you many americans that will trash him anyday, damn straight the level of competition is way too high, he doesn't even stand a chance for the mile 1/2 which is the distance he is known for "oops turf", by the way turf is not a premier horse race more like secondary,as for Point Given award, he won the belmont forget the rest, that is good enough for me lol.
Once upon a time there was a horse called Exceller- the highlight of his career was finishing third in the King George at Ascot behind The Minstrel and Orange Bay- after that he has shipped to the colonies and made cheap hay beating third rate nags like Seattle Slew and Affirmed.
exceller took advantage of the match race between slew and affirmed "it almost look like exceller's team paid affirmed to burn out slew" still slew came back n few more yards he would have taken the lead from exceller "I am with Exceller on this one, cause the way he died" u r right he was the better horse that day RIP Exceller.
The greatest horse bar none? You must be smoking crack. Man 'O War would destroy any of those with ease. Nothing like eurosnobs believing they are superior - Oh sorry, I forgot that Sheikh Mohammed owns everything over there...
I'm American and I completely agree with you. Europe has produced at least 10 superstars THIS DECADE that were as good as any US runner. The last 10-15 years have been a golden era in European racing. And Europe is producing the type of classic horse that is becoming so rare in the US
Tiznow-what an amazing horse. I bet him that day, and he showed so much heart after being lame 5 months before. One of the all time great horses. TIZWOW!
