  • I tried to like this band. I mean, they are making sea music popular. I am a true lover of shanties and sea songs, but this is pure shit. I mean pure un-alduratred crap from the depths of hell. If satan himself did a cover of a traditional shanty I would challenge him tro do a worse version of captain kidd.

  • You know, for most of my young life I never understood the "EH?" stereotype for Canadians. I mean, I'm a Newfoundlander. We don't say it. So, it took me years to figure out that the mainlanders do. And yet they say we talk strange?

  • @Masterkavi That makes sense. We don't say it on PEI either xD

  • Are any of those people relatives of the band?

  • @busterpiggle Yep! The man at 0:44 is Alan's father, Bernie Doyle. :) Not sure about the others though.

  • @GBSfan278 Thanks! That's pretty neat. Isn't the band missing a member there?

  • @busterpiggle Are you thinking of Darrell Power (the one who wore glasses)? He left the band several years ago to spend more time with his family. Not sure what he's up to these days.

  • @somegalfromcan Yup! That's the fellow I was thinking of. Too bad he left.

  • @busterpiggle I agree - I was pretty sad when I heard he had left. He's an amazing musician. I met him briefly after a show - seemed like a really nice guy.

  • @somegalfromcan He gave his own flavour to Excursion Around the Bay, and now Alan is too! It's great they've kept classic favourites, but changed them up.

  • LOVE THIS GROUP! First heard and saw them at Celtic Festival in Chicago - maybe 2002/2003. WOW!

  • @x0callisto0x I'm addicted to this song too... Only recently learned of GBS as a result of watching Robin Hood. Good movie, better band. Very talented and versatile! Simply wonderful!

  • @MiraiBennett They're a very addictive band. I stumbled across them on Pandora a couple months ago & haven't been able to stop listening. xD

  • I think the best part is that all the smiles are genuine. I love GBS and they're gonna be coming to my area really soon! I need to go get some tickets and someone else that's willing to go see them with me.

  • @TheNewKeylaleigh Hell YES! They're touring. Got my tickets for the 25th. Can't wait!

  • @albatrossforlife REALLY? That's when I'm getting my tickets for!

  • @TheNewKeylaleigh Sweet! It's going to be awsome! Hurry though. I'd say "I'll see you there"....but we wouldn't know each other from a pothole.

  • @TheNewKeylaleigh Did you make it? They were Awsome!

  • @albatrossforlife Unfortunately, there were no seats left when I went to get my tickets... I'm upset. Hopefully they come around again.

  • i love this song....video, lyrics, happy people. thanks

  • My musical interests are expanding everyday. Out of everything I've heard in my life, so far it's added up to punk, old school rock n roll, and this! :D

  • @JESSESEIBEL Loves it by.

  • haha, it's customary to smile during a sea shanty.

  • thanks for the lirics!!!!

  • great song!!!WHERE can i find the lirics???

  • Who are they playing with??

  • @koyukimaho911 - The banjo player at 2:36 is Fergus O'Byrne, of Ryan's Fancy fame. (He's credited on CK, and also on the GBS song "Turn." ) The dark haired male fiddle player is his son, Fergus Brown O'Byrne. Father and son can be seen at 2:23. Alan Doyle's parents are playing guitar (father) and accordion (mother.) The curly haired girl is Jenny Gear, who was on "Canadian Idol." Alan's black dog is Molly. That's all I know. The others may be friends and relatives of the band.

  • i have the same last name, Kidd

  • The black dog that's sitting with Alan in 1:26, I groomed her! I'm a dog groomer.

  • @ThePoPsIcLeXD Actually they know how, they just missed it accidently ;) lol

  • i love this song i makes be think of pirates but i look at this video everyday thanks for posting it

  • Kidd was not English, Irish or American. He was 100% SCOTTISH.

  • CAptainKidd was my Ancestor

  • @xXFallingBackXx Then you know he was a Scot, Hollywood insists on making him English.

  • @locheelad2 ya he was born in Greenock and he was actually hung but the song said that they cut his head off

  • @xXFallingBackXx Right, Greenock, west of Glasgow had a head start on the London ships, for the voyage to the America's. Today Greenock folk are still tough as nails. They traded and smuggled Tobacco, and gave the colonists money up front, unlike the English who wrote scripts etc. and made the poor colonists wait. As for songs we must allow literary license.

  • @xXFallingBackXx He was not hung out to dry on a clothes line, he was hanged to death.

Pet peeve. But seriously, it's hanged.

  • @xXFallingBackXx it's hard to write a song using the word "Hanged."

In the morning I was hanged

    for the prostitutes I'd banged

oh I was quite hugely wanged

    as I sailed.

  • @xXFallingBackXx thats hot loves it

  • im proud to be a newfoundlander

  • @TheSheba12 Me old man be from Newfoundland. I wish I could say the same. I was born on the mainland.

  • His voice does not match his face.

  • im a newfe

  • as I sailed.

  • yeah

whas with all the up in your face and sad music

  • Why are there only three guys in this video? I thought there were 4 in the group.

  • There are 3 founding members and two added members, and they are all in the video.

  • i like this song:)

  • Jenny GEAR!

  • they do smile idoit!

  • Canadian music is the best EH!

  • @comanche119 hell yea ^.^

  • @comanche119 most definetly!

  • @comanche119

Canadian music is F*ckin EH! :)

  • @Davidthewalker2160

I'm getting a tattoo on my shoulder of a Canadian flag and the words Fuc*in EH! underneath

  • @comanche119 Especially from Newfoundland ;D

  • @comanche119

im canadian so i don't know if i should thumbs up or kill you

  • @theruder9 HAHHA!! im Canadian too. in fact, i hate it when people (im looking at you USA) make fun of us for saying "Eh" because its actually a habit that ANYONE can get.. i just said it just to see if anyone would say something. and thank go you did :P

  • @comanche119

I agree with you. A lot of Americans make fun of Canadians and Brits for the way they speak. I've adopted a few speech patterns of both nations, and I'm an American. People I know often comment when I say "eh" or spell something with a British spelling. I'm glad someone other than me is annoyed by that. =)

  • @EruannaKay Living fairly close to Ontario, Grandfather came over from Ireland, and Father living in New Zealand, I tend to slide into different English idioms and accents, depending on whom I've been talking to most recently, or where I've been for a while. It's on somewhat of a subconcious level now. Just wanted to let my neighbours to the North know, we aren't all as ethnocentric down here.

  • @EruannaKay im canadian, i think we talk pretty normal, but brits are fucked

  • @goteggs1234 We know we are. The classic british eccentric is a stereotype for a good reason. But that doesn't change the fact that english originated in... Well i'm sure you've heard the rest before.

  • @DepOpt1988 hahaha i was just kiddin, canadians are just as fucked as brits, well, almost... haha anyway, no hard feelings

  • @goteggs1234 FUCK YOU MAN !!

    YOU MUST BE AMERICA

    PUKE!!!!

  • @goteggs1234 You aint kiddin' mate now pass the bottle an' lets get down the footie.

  • @theruder9 thumbs up, of course.... because you are so polite. ;-)

  • @comanche119 EH?*

  • @Garren16 -_-

  • @comanche119 Stereotype.

  • @nickSH0TLitKerosene You have to admit though that we do say 'eh' often. I don't, but my family practically breathes the word. >_>

  • @comanche119 yup. thats fur shure man!

  • It is nearly impossible to stay sad watching these guys!

  • @ErisDiscordia42 darn right man!!

  • this makes me smile :)

  • agree

  • alan doyle you rock man

  • SHEHT.

  • The music & singer's voice are crazy good! I don't know much about sea shanties, but I imagine most of em are about rebellion & violence in some way!

  • I love this song, the lyrics are such a contrast from the upbeat tune :)

  • awsome song :D

  • this was the first song I heard from GBS and was hooked

  • My dad sang this song as lullaby for me when I was a baby. Other parents disapproved, but I like it, my son will get it too. XD

  • i love this song :)

  • great big sea is one of the best bands out there

  • Notice the video has nearly nothing to do with the lyrics of the song but about the good time you can have while listening to this awesome band.

  • This is a good way to show the importance of music in Newfoundland.. and how much people enjoy it. I don;t think the intention was for it to reflect the song.

  • Well despite the lyrics, the melody itself is sweet enough to make you smile anyway.

  • ah gotcha thought u were being sarcastic since they're all smiling constantly thru the video

  • more people need to smile in their music videos...

  • @aussieallystar its called enjoying what u do and it is a catchy and upbeat song despite the story it tells :P hell i cant help but smile watching the vid lol

  • i'm saying its good that they're smiling and that more people need too, since no body ever does..

  • @aussieallystar It's hard not to smile while singing sea shanties.

    XD

  • @aussieallystar i agree. looks like he is singing because he loves to, not for money or fame.

  • @aussieallystar right on

  • theses guys blow my mind

  • what r u @?

  • such a catchy song!!

  • ships of the day had gunners and runners and such so he killed someone who was the gunner (usually of cannon)

  • ships of the day had gunners and runners and such so he killed someone who was a gunner (of cannon usually)

  • Not to sound like an idiot, but when they say "The gunner I did kill", who are they refering to?

  • actually William Moore was the gunner... after a disagreement kidd killed him with a bucket

  • accounts vary but the testimony of the quartemaster(which was supressed at the trial and found about a hundred year later) said that Kidd rightfuly killed an attempted mutineer who want to turn the legal privateer to a pirate VS all flagsand Kidd as the holder of the letters of marque was perfectly within his rights to supress the attempted mutiny with violece.Kidd later took the fall for the rich tory lords and merchants who literally hung him out tt dry to save their own skins and positions.

  • When I was a kid (npi)my Dad had an 20 volumne encyclopedia called "The History of Crime and Punishment".It had a several page article on the good Captain (even including court transcripts)wherein they concluded that he'd been railroaded .Actually made him out to be a bit of a hero, bravely facing death with dignity, head held high and all.All in all I thought then, and still do,that he'd done nothing but serve his country and was ill paid for his efforts.

  • Captain Kidd was privateer funded by several ords, from what I've read they wanted to take eveything and leave kidd with nothing. Yees it's true he stopped a muntaniy. If anything the way Kidd was handled it would be and in my veiw is a miscariage of justice.

  • Yes, Kidd was, if memory serves, an accidental pirate. He raided a ship that was either under the protection of his patron or something similar, he had no way of knowing the truth but that didn't matter.

  • William Kidd was a privateer under the English throne.

However, he stumbled upon a English Merchant Vessel that was sailing with French flags (I can't recall if he was hiding or the captain was just English). William, furious about this, allowed the crew to live and when the Captain returned to mainland he told the tale and William was thus a pirate. He was brought to "justice" and hung at the docks in London, strapped in chains to make an example out of him.

  • He was an English privateer. He attacked a ship which was flying the french flag. The ships crew was English however. He did nothing wrong there since they were under french protection but during his trial the ships French papers were "lost". He would have been convicted of other charges anyway since he killed a crewman out of anger.

  • What a great song. Love it.
