I am convinced that they recorded this and the execs said" its a little too off the deep end...lets dumb it down so everyone gets it", The version that ended up on the album is a watered down version for sure! but still rocksAZZ!
This is badass! It's a damn shame what rock music has become, but this is the REAL Van Halen. Anybody who listens to Van Hagar, please listen to how it's supposed to sound.
When I first heard this song I was 11 years old and my oldest brother had just come home from the Navy with his Technics SL-1950. I was an instant fan. "Atomic Punk" is my #1 of all time. That was the crispiest music I had ever heard in my life. That same day I heard Thin Lizzy "Jailbreak" too. I was an instant rocker. Up until that point I was only allowed to watch Hee Haw and the Dolly Pardon and Porter Wagner etal. Grandma called it devil music hahaha. Only God can make such a perfect sound.
The thing that the old boots and rares tell you about VH is that they wrote most of the music from all of their albums before they were even signed. Damn, they need Mikey back.
Man, while we're waiting for some new material, it'd be great if VH released a bunch of these outtakes along with some early live stuff (the rare stuff when Dave remembered the lyrics to the songs) on a double disc compilation. There's never been anything really comprehensive released offically by the band, and it's about damn time.
I like the fact that it is a little slower than the final version on the album.....Just picked up a turntable and all of their albums with Roth on vinyl again (yes I was stupid enough to throw out all of my albums from when I was a teenager 15 years ago).....they fuckin' rock......Total legends at work!
Ive heard so many covers of this song!!!! EVH is so amazing!!!! Wow!!! This guy wasnt even from this planet!!!!!!!!! Where would rock and roll be today if this guy never showed up??? Thanks for posting this bro!!! God Bless!!!!!
This guy is the Mahamud ali of guitar!!!!!!!!! His rythems will never be matched!!! Is it just me or can this guy make a solo out of one note, on one string with a wammy bar!!!! I'm blown away even over 30 years later!!!!!!! Thank you for this studio version my friend!!!!!!!
this kid was playing guitar like this at 15yrs old, this kid was going to be a phenom regardless of producers, you have to mold a sellable product, and that is what it boils down to....................................
All you have to do is track down the Gene Simmons demos to hear what Ted Templeman did for VH.
They Sound like a completely different band.
TT and Don Landee where able to present them to the listening public in such a way as to capitalize on their many strengths. It was pure genius on his part. Without Ted's contribution it's debateable if van halen would have become VAN HALEN.
Without the investors backing Warner Entertainment, owner of the Warner-Electra-Asylum music division, Van Halen would never have seen the light of day.
In the end, Van Halen came into being for a "listening public" on a grand scale because of bank rolling, capitalist investors in a large corporation.
@TruthAxe True, true, TruthAxe, but in this case I don't have a problem with that. If the product I'm being sold is Van Halen I don't mind being an unwitting pawn in the capitalist machine. Otherwise, it's unlikely I would have ever heard them.
@hanksteelbranch Many cheers for capitalism! Without it, our lives would be short and a brutish hell.
After all, capital merely means any intermediate good, from money, to hammer to copyrights that help someone make a surplus in final goods, which he can trade for other goods or in an advanced economy, cash. ;-)
It's great to live in advanced times, which has given us Van Halen and toothpaste!
@TruthAxe Subprime mortgages? Derivatives? Fast food? Capitalism as practiced in the latter day USA has developed a sales and marketing technology that overwhelms the human capacity to resist. We are defined by what, and how much we consume. There is no such thing as enough or too much. If we are not involved in the continuous practice of consumption, someone, somewhere, is not maximizing their earning potential. The capitalist train has run off the tracks.
@hanksteelbranch The Corporatist-Socialist hybrid that rides on a legal tender, paper money scheme hardly could be called a Capitalist Train.
Politicians and Bureaucrats (aka govt) make all the rules from which subprime mortgages and derivatives arise. True, they do so at the behest of Oligopolists who seek to rig rules and thus control the game.
Yet, this is a kind of Collectivism, yet another Collectivist scheme like feudalism, fascism, socialism, and communism.
Eddie did had a pretty angry / dark tone on that first record though....i will give him props for that. It did influence alot of metal in the future. But VH's only kick ass album was the 1st.
I know people in the industry. This will sum up most pop metal musicians:seriously driven individuals that really love making a racket, that, without a producer, would be a second rate garage band. Eddie talked it all up "it was live man" "it was all magic man" BULLSHIT. Without a producer yr fucked. As far as Death Metal, why would they need to rewrite a song to fit the radio ? They dont. So they do exactly what they want.
Part 2. Go listen to Edge of The Hatchet by SIX FEET UNDER. Remember DLR saying VH was about furry and kicking ass in the begining ? Well that was yesterday. Today its about anihilation. And im no 14 yr old kid. 37yrs old and loving the hard shit.
I dont understand comments like this last guy. I dont know what you listen too, but when you have rewritten the guitar like eddie, you can criticize. How many world tours have you been on? How many times has your music been on the charts? How many professional contracts have you signed? Just another armchair philosopher.. know everything, but never been there
@maicotim I hear you maicotim. I understand what cobias means in the sense of the "magic of producing" and how they can take even a so-so artist and make them sound amazing. Still, the talent has to be there in the first place to sound like VH. Having been exposed to the engineering end, I will say that most bands sound like "garage bands" without a good run through by a good mastering engineer. Our ears have become so accustomed to hearing pro-mastered music, music sounds like junk without it
Thank you for posting this! Obviously the song sounds better with the album version chorus but this version sounds killer and it's a reminder that VH recorded all their songs from the floor. Unlike every band out there now. Including Metallica.
This is a prime example of how VH used to play this song during the club days. I take it Ted made them clean it up for the record release but this version is much hotter!
I have said many, many times over the last 31 years the very same thing: Eddie Van Halen is indeed form another planet! The alien genius of the mighty Edward Lodewijk Van Halen!
@PumpkinPuffer Most great rock vocalist aren't technically great, but they have a distinctive style that can't be taught or learned and Roth has that! He was also second to none when it came to stage presence and incredible acrobatics!
@PumpkinPuffer Roth had the most unique, likable voice for me. Sammy Hagar's voice is too grating for me. The only thing I didn't like about Roth's voice was his weird falsetto screams and when he talked in the interludes all the time.
@PumpkinPuffer Roth was a great vocalist, he wrote some really good lyrics , his voice was more than solid and he was perhaps the best showman in hard rock of the last 30 years.. People consider Ozzy Osbourne a great vocalalist and the guy couldn't hit a high note or sing in tune if his life depended on it and his "showmanship consisted of waddling around the stage and occasionally biting the head off an animal. lol
@matador919 yeah man it's like that with almost all my favorite old bands, but i guess it was def leppard that really went to hell the most i.m.o.but man, this version of this song is so heavy and raw,i wish they had left it just like this for the first record!whats your favorite van halen record? mines 2.
@matador919 Dude, thats all part of life!!!! There is nothing like the energy and creativity of youth!!!! I cant even bust a nut anymore!! And if I do, I dont feel anything!!!! They were the greatist in thier time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Wilkster5150 You Sound like"linus"from "The Peanuts" Cartoon. the great pumpkin is coming! you'll all see he really is!! you'll all see. Fact: There Is No Great Pumpk'in,...
@bongnbud You sound like an idiot. Have fun with your hip hop, pop, rap, modern rock bullshit. Older VH willblow away all the crap out there now. Atleast they know how to play their instruments.
@bongnbud micheall just told my neighbor that eddie VH. doesn't now you from adam, looks like your just another fucking poser on you tube who claims that he knows rock stars...busted ASSHOLE.
@bongnbud hey you lame ass stoner douche, stay the fuck off my page you lying asshole, nobody's gonna believe your fairy tale telling ass anyway. if you haven't the balls to leave your page available then stay the fuck off of other peoples shit. dumbass
I remember very well when this album came out... I was 10... instantly I had more street cred than any kid in the 4th grade !! they were listening to sissy Kiss... actually I already had cred, I had "Give us a Wink" by Sweet before VH.. this song in particular was INTENSE for 1978... still love it !
Where did you find this? Ive heard the Gene Simmons demo, but Ive also heard that there are "dry" uncut versions without added effects of the first album out there.
Fuck....this song possesses such great talent and creativity.......blows my fucking mind away \m/ Respect for the band and Eddie! \m/

I was 10... instantly I had more street cred than any kid in the 4th grade !! they were listening to sissy Kiss... actually I already had cred, I had "Give us a Wink" by Sweet before VH.. this song in particular was INTENSE for 1978... still love it !

Where did you find this? Ive heard the Gene Simmons demo, but Ive also heard that there are "dry" uncut versions without added effects of the first album out there.
