This was never designed to be a simple straight line performer, it was designed to be an actual sports car that could go around corners. It sure has the engine of a musclecar and has that awesome musclecar sound, but I wouldn't call this a musclecar, this is definitely a classic sports car. I do love musclecars, though...

The 427 engines,, FE blocks, were center or top oiiler in 1963 and sideoilers came later. This was to get oil to lower end better. The blocks have an oil gallery cast on the side. The camshaft has grooves in #2 and #4 to redirect oil to bottom end.

@rpatton3 The FE block with a C2AE-BD casting number would be the cross-bolted FE. The heads would be C4AE-6090-F, and the intake should be a C4AE-9424-F casting number. The carbs would depend on how it was ordered (Low, Medium, High rise), but should always have C5AE-9510 as the prefix (Though the 9510 will not always be present due to a line change in RPO sometime in 1964.

The original 260ci cobra with the street 260hp engine and bony Goodyears, ran 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. (67mph in 1st). It made it to 100 in 10.8 seconds and 13.8 @112 in the 1/4mile. Top speed of 154mph (observed) with a 3:54 gear. The first few Cobras didn't have the close ratio B/W trans. Road and Track Sept. 1962.

Love these things, especially with the CAMMER motor in them. So so so much love :) A mate of mine has a kit car that he's built with a standard 5L EFI Windsor (same as your 90's Mustang) and 5spd manual, and got kicked out of the drags for being too fast. So naturally his response was to buy a Dart block ready for a 347 crank, rods and 0.030" slugs along with a blower. Bastard..... lol. Hope you enjoy your Cobra for many more years to come :)
