Wow! This is unbelievably intense! I agree with every comment below. This is an incredible performance! And one could listen to this again and again! (The wee hours of the morning all of sudden break into dawn!)
Not my fav part of Akhnaten but fabulous, this ROCKS! I love the mix between the music nerdery of the piece and the rocking performance! It's very much that way the best music for C64 was made (just mentioning) And the arrangement goes kind of circular in this piece instead of linear.
Paul Barnes does the most potent and alive performances of Glass, beyond compare. I can listen again and again . . .If this is a Bosendorfer or any other piano, it sings with such vigor here!
@sky44david Ravel (master of orchestration) make a symphony from Mussogorski's piano work, this guy has made a perfect reverse enginering of this wonderful opera!!!
@SrNutritivo His abilities as a pianist notwithstanding, you can buy a piano/vocal score of the entire opera, including the Dance. It's all already there.
Great performances! I really think that a DVD with similar performances should be done. Maybe I say that because I work in the TV business and also beacause I'm a huge fan of the music of Glass but I pretty sure that it would be interesting to watch a well produced DVD of Paul Barnes. By well produced, I mean performances shot by many cameras at the same time and artistically edited. That would be a dream for me to do such a work. It is certainly something that I would buy.
unreal !!!!

Well done sir. However, the passion and overall feeling of the original piece is impossible to capture with a piano alone.

Thanks for putting this up! I have a copy of your album, "American Piano Concertos", and didn't expect to see your performances on Youtube!
Many thanks for not just this piece, but for all the many recordings you've done of contemporary piano music.

For those interested, the Atlanta Opera will be staging two concert performances of Akhnaten in January 2008

Excellent, of course it's about 100 times faster than it was in the Opera but very cool nonetheless.
