I read somewhere that this piece was written originally for an episode of the Loretta Young Show but was later used for One Step Beyond. How appropriate and hauntingly beautiful it is.

i have the CD of the soundtrack this music is from,i bought it several years ago from a mail order house and i still enjoy listening to it.very spooky music indeed.
Lubin recorded this in Germany, conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker. This isn't the actual series' theme {"Fear" is}, but this is probably Lubin's most famous cue- every time this was heard on "ONE STEP BEYOND", it meant something supernatural [and unexplainable] was happening.
This music sounds similar to one of John Williams' themes in Close Encounters. That haunted theme that would come in and out. The scene where Dryfuss and the Jillian character see the Devil's Tower on television. I guess even a master like John Williams gets inspiration from others. Has anybody else noticed this eerie similarity?
I have this LP. The incomparable; Harry Lubin Orchestra. Back when Woolworth was King! When a dime would get you a double scoop at Thrifty Drug, and chrome would glisten from our sissy bars.
Unlike the Twilight Zone and the Outer Limits, many if not most of the plots on OSB were based upon "news of the weird" stories from actual newspaper articles and books that collected what were then called "strange but true" events. Nowadays we use the more pleasant term of "anomalies," but such tales are still no less spooky. Hence the music used for OSB had to be equally spooky... and it sure was.

As I've previously mentioned, Lubin originally composed this cue for an April 1955 episode of "THE LORETTA YOUNG SHOW", "Feeling No Pain", when Loretta's character falls into a dream sequence, while in a dentist's chair...Lubin reused several cues from her series for "ONE STEP BEYOND" as well.
q interesante q en la caratula del disco saca una figura como spiral luego colores ¿ no sera un remolino el inicio del chacra, el cual se relaciona con la flor de la vida EL INICIO DE LO DESCONOCIDO Y LA MARAVILLA
I suspect you know that this score is available on CD and has been since the late 90s. I wish they had included some other cues from the show that were also very creepy and which were left off this tv soundtrack. I thought Harry Lubin's music for the second season of The Outer Limits was also very creepy. "Weird," of the two basic OSB themes is easily the creepiest, and yes, strangely beautiful. Wish someone would bring out the complete DVD.
I got up at 3 in the morning to feed him & was watching OSB while I was giving him a bottle. This music scared me to the point I could not go back to sleep.
You deserve a 5 star rating that I'm gonna give you for posting the original theme song. I watched the series as a kid, thought even back then that the music was eerie, sad, but so beautiful. Thanks again.
The same here! It creeped me out, both the opening and closing themes just made my skin crawl. I had to leave the room during those times of the show if one of my parents wasn't in the room with me.
It still sends a chill up my spine to this day, but I love it. As a matter of fact the entire album is very good but the other songs aren't scary.
@VinylNostalgia I used to have every light on in the house when this came on TV. Wait a minute...I have all the lights on now. Some things never change.

My first time hearing it in Stereo.
It still works.

Reminds me of Debussy.
Valjean99 2 years ago
No doubt Debussy was the main influence here but I also detect a bit of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Thanks for posting this!
It's certainly a nice piece- and the way it was used in the show, I cannot imagine anything more appropriate. Just perfect.
Someone left a comment on one of the OSB posts that this music made the hair stand up on the back of their neck. Ditto.
This little gem spooked me when I was 6, and I'm happy to say, nearly 50 years down the road, it still does!
A chill a minute. In Stereo, no less! Powerful stuff.
