  • OH I remember this clip live when it was shown on Midnight special. It was the summer before I became a freshmen in HS. My mom and cousin were just blown away how guys like this can let their hair grow long. I was very ticked off I wanted them to shut up because I wanted to hear this song. Such great memories of a perfect era in music. And also the start of Steve Perry with Journey just an awesome lead singer with a tons of vocal talents.

  • I love it! And that look by the way is back, you watch it this summer. Ha,ha... Love it all!!!

  • love it all ways have all ways will my fav

  • Hot hot hot!!! Love that Steve! Whatcha talkin about Neil's hair...I think it's dope, baby.

  • sounds just like the Album , 'cough'

  • Steve Smith on drums everybody!...Steve Smith everybody....Give the drummer some. Loved Aynsley, loved Steve Smith even more.

Steve Perry will always... and I mean ALWAYS be Journey. Without him they are just a step up from a Holiday Inn Immation band. That guy that sang on the Today Show couldn't hold Steve Perry's jock strap....er, whatever, let alone take his place in the band. And WHAT'S UP with Neils hair here. Friggin Chia pet....LoNG LIVE THE TWO STEVE'S!!!

  • @Tikitiki200 LOL!!!!! Chia pet lololol!

  • @Tikitiki200 Couldn't agree with you more!!! Loved Steve Smith... but you know I honestly believe if Greg Rollie would have stuck around they would have been bigger then they were. Their earliest stuff is the most amazing I think. Its all great no doubt though! =)

  • @fastfallingstar89 Here, here... I second that emotion.

  • @fastfallingstar89 no way

  • what is Steve Perry doing now adays? Really sucks he left Journey.

  • @martialfan36

Just produced the new greatest hits volume 2.

  • I don't think they were lip syncing because at the end it gets the live sound of the people clapping and screaming. i think that the studio songs were placed over this video because u couldn't here him sing. Look at his mouth on the very last note at the end. you cant hear it.

  • Steve Perry is one of the best male rock vocalists!

  • OK - Steve Perry, YES, he IS perfection, thank you phxdivine! OMG did I LOVE THAT MAN when I was a teeeeen ager! He just IS. SO. AWESOME! I like the new guy (hard to believe he sounds so good when Steve Perry is such a hard act to follow, right? But he's terrific!) I knew EVERY word, every nuance to EVERY Journey song when this was popular. THANK YOU JOURNEY, THANK YOU STEVE PERRY (WE MISS YOU!!!) Thank you balbuf for putting this up, and THANK YOU YOUTUBE for being YOU, TUBE!

  • My favorite part of this is at 2:05 when Steve jumps off the stage and starts singing to the girl in the red top. He stares directly into her cleavage, wiggles his eyebrows, then finally raises his eyes to look at her face. What a typical man, LOL!

  • @BeakyPeartree You noticed that too. That was very sneeky. I wonder if that girl noticed that also. LOL!

  • Neal Schon had the coolest fro in the 70s

  • @08spoons..if you are beyond this intellectual thread, why are you even here?

  • You dont even deserve a comment Mr Expert.

It is unlikely you would understand proper English.

I dont know what makes egomaniacs like you tick (An egomaniac is someone that esteems himself to be of an inordinately high position, IE above the norm)

PLEASE go back to pleasuring yourself to some old April Wine records.

Most of us endeavour (look the meaning up, it will be located under "E" ) to enjoy this medium to see that which we would otherwise have not had the opportunity to see.

  • JOURNEY WAS JOURNEY BEFORE STEVE PERRY AND WILL ALWAYS BE JOURNEY. END OF DISCUSSION

  • Not only do you respond with uneeded venom, you are completely wrong in stating that everybody played to a backing track on Midnight Special.

Perhaps you need to research Midnight Special, the "MTV" of the time. That overdub idiocy was a johnny come lately. Journey was fantastic live.

Stop being such a prick and maybe you can have some interesting discourse, teaching and , yes, possibly learning something. Too many people on this great medium who get their thrills denigrating others.

  • @08spoons Hit the REPLY button if you have something to say! MORON!

  • @NoSteveNoPoint You dont even deserve a comment

  • @08spoons = MONGOLOID

  • @NoSteveNoPoint So "mongoloid" is your profound intellectual retort?

Seriously, you havent the intellectual capacity to come up with something more educational?

I expected something more instructional and amusing from the Great 70's afficionado.

Lets give this a rest, its making ME more ignorant the longer we continue.

  • @08spoons SEEK HELP MORON!

  • @NoSteveNoPoint Ok , thats a little better. I want you to sit down and think hard about the insults.....I know you can do it!!!!

  • @08spoons = MONGOLOID

  • @NoSteveNoPoint Ok, you win.

  • @08spoons I KNOW

  • WOW!!! HATERS MUCH????? Maybe just a "little" jealous...call Steve P. ANYTHING you like, but he can & could SING! One of THE BEST VOCALIST of ALL TIME...BAR NONE! If you can do betta..let's see it! Yep...it's what I thought...SILENCE! JOURNEY with Steve Perry IS JOURNEY! End of CONVO!

  • He looks like a woman trying to be a man

  • Comment removed

  • I haven't seen or heard anyone like Steve!!!!!!!! If cloning was real, I need at least two Steves!

  • Completely Dreamy!!!! <3 :)

  • Weird, they were good enough by far to play live...........lip synched. Nobody notices the compression and effects of the City of the Angels chorus?

Neils hair and moustache are great, Id give anything too look like that.

He looks like my uncle Herbert today, but he is a better player now.

  • @08spoons They always played LIVE! DUHHH, This was the equivalent of an MTV video in the day, which ALWAYS had the studio version dubbed behind it. Wise Up!

  • like Neil's Jew fro....lol

  • Did u see the way he was lookin at her boooobies !!! HAaaaaaaaa

  • Steve Perry makes me go weak in the knees.

  • @Davio87 NO SHIT!!!

  • Gregg Rolie @ Poor David's Pub in Dallas, TX - Friday, Sept 30. Go to Poor David's website for ticket info!

  • I was 15 yrs old ,,,, wow time flies !!!! steve was soooooooooooooo hot !

Steve was 30 years old !!! wow .... he still sexy as ever !!! even now !

  • I was 15 yrs old ,,,, wow time flies !!!! steve was soooooooooooooo hot !

  • @felineboybandlover HEY...COOL...I WAS 15 HERE TOO....KOOL...

  • If he sang like that to me, I would be on the ground screaming, 'I am not worthy!'

  • I love you steve perry

  • Also Linda McCartney in the chrome jump suit rocks.

  • Gay song by a great band...and some serious gender confusion by our lead singer...look at those arms...this cupcake needs to get out of the house and do some construction work. Love the height-compensation fro by our guitarist though. Rock on boys.

  • i THINK IT'S COOL HOW HE DECIDED TO SING IT TO THAT ONE GIRL IN THE AUDIENCE, SHE LOOKED KINDA EMBARASSED LOL

  • @NEDEERC But, he was not looking at her face. His eyes were looking elsewhere. LOL!

  • Love that Cordless Mike!

  • Steve~love you forever!

  • Don't forget about the other awesome Steve in this band!

  • Neal Schon's guitar tone was killer. He is one of the most under rated guitar players of all time.

  • Boy, they looked so young then. But, so did the rest of us, I saw this tour. In a couple more years the "fro" will be back in style and who knows maybe guys will learn to pull up their pants.

  • That's funny, all these old "live" shows just had the bands lipsynching. That's the record for sure.

  • @monasticbeing it is the recording. they did lipsync because they were in the middle of their infinity tour, i believe. an playing shows every night, singing like he does takes its toll on the voice.

  • Isn't the guy in the start of the video the wolfman from America Graffiti?

  • i love steve i would love to love him touch and squeeze him

  • I don't know why they made them lip synch. they can pull it off live...

  • Steve is a pretty man..no Homo!!!

  • Steve Perry = perfection :)

  • Lip syncing was forbidden on The Midnight Special!

  • @dogroferifno sure sounds lip synched

  • @dogroferifno No, it wasn't. Here's proof right here. I think the producers gave the bands the option of miming, live vocal over tracks, or doing it totally live. This performance is ALL mimed. Maybe the band's schedule didn't allow time for a proper sound check to play live for just two songs. They were touring pretty heavily back then. I wouldn't be surprised if this a video playback from dress rehearsal and the band wasn't even actually there during the broadcast.

  • Booed off the stage in Buffalo, booked onto the wrong bill opening for the Stones. Came back 4 months later and sold out in 22 minutes, BEFORE the internet was around.

  • Steve Perry looks like Demi Moore

  • This is clearly lip-synced. There is so way he could sing this well after all those concert dates. He has to rest his voice sometime.

  • Now living in retirement living the good life

  • I love this double song set! What I would give to have been that lucky gal to whom Steve(THE GREAT ROCK GOD OF ALL TIME!!!) sang to,I wonder if she got lucky that night, he sure had his eye on her? The things that I would do to Steve, well... I'm sure he would have been pleased! His beautiful God given voice makes me melt everytime! Yum Yum Yum....Your number one fan in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. Sharon Smith

  • Perry is not gay. The song Oh Sherry was about one of his girl friends. She traveled with the band at the time, and Perry sadly hung out with her instead of his band mates. Also, the first song her is about him catching his then girlfriend with another guy.

  • Exact vocal as the album track..Completely lip synched. Too bad. Check the song length if you want proof. Same length to the second.

  • @motormouth1970 not it's not synched to the original. this is live. his falsetto gets wimpy and pitchy and the vocal tone is nowhere near the original.

  • Comment removed

  • all the young of today seee this is music, and talent, and how its done,oh rap,rap this

  • no lip syncing?? you on crack or just jealous?

  • @HolyDiver55100 THEY DID NOT DO LIP SYNCHING ON THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL...THE PRODUCERS WOULD NOT ALLOW IT...THEY WANTED TO SEE IT PERFORMED "LIVE" I KNOW FOR A FACT BY RESEARCH ON GOOGLE WIKI

  • @justcruzzinn You bought into the myth. If you have any doubt, check out any "live" performance by ABBA. Guess what, sometimes people lie. Shocking, I know, but there you have it.

  • @tdelamont Yeah, I think you are right...I was LIED to.....go figure......thanks

  • There is NO lip syncing going on here at all....

  • Timeless beauty.

  • Amazing fashion statement!

  • can hear sam cooke's influence

  • I remember laying in front of the television salivating watching this.....lol

  • wolf man jack, were's your popcicle amrican graffiti, "SMO'KIN"!

  • wolf man jack, were's your popcicle amican graffiti, "SMO'KIN"!

  • I watched this in my living room in 1979! What a great band, what a great memory!

  • This song obviously displays Steve Perry's vocal abilities. Say what you will about Journey, I took them for granted when they were on the charts, they were a very talented and tight band. I saw them in concert several times at the request of a girlfriend and was always pleasantly surprised at quality of their shows.

  • Poor Journey, that fuckin Glee horseshit took their songs in vein, least i know the real versions though :))

  • just when i think the other steve wannabees are ok i watch him sing live and i realize they are shit compared to steve lol. damn. what a vocal powerhouse.

  • Oh shit... it's 11:44 and I gotta work tomorrow..... LATER

  • my my my...what else is there to say.....my hubby thinks i am obsessed.....no...yes...maybe!!!1

  • If you did that many concerts you'd wanna LS too. The man is not a machine. Give him a break. Steve's gotta rest those beautiful pipes sometime.

  • If you did that many concerts youd wanna LS too. THe man is not a machine. Give him a break.

  • Xspecify, the world knows! Steve Perry is the Greatest Leadsinger of Journey. No matter what I wish the new Journey well, but without Steve Perry they may sell lots of CDs and concerts, but The Voice is Not to be Duplicted.

  • They released a new cd last week. I have one thing to say! GET STEVE PERRY BACK!

  • PURE LIP SYNCH

  • @Hunkola I feel sorry for you dude.

  • @Hunkola From 1979 until the end of this TV show, EVERY BAND was MADE to lip synch for TV. Check out their 1978 appearance on the Midnight Special and you'll find IT was NOT lip synched.

  • killer check out freedom and whiskey here on u tube cheers

  • I agree. There's nothing like vintage Journey! Steve Perry, musical icon!!!!!

  • Lame

  • I saw these guys on this tour towards the end, so don't judge him for lip syncing! One awesome show you should have been ther, A+++ Guys, and whom put this on here Thank You

  • Just so there's no mistaking: YES this is a sync performance to their album cuts, and YES this was done a lot on Midnight Special. Performers would either fake the whole thing or sing live over the instrumental track from their album. It was never any trouble to mix a version of a song with only the desired tracks. Things to listen for: harmonies and timing, instrument mixes, guitar tone. These are all IDENTICAL to the album. Nevertheless, Journey is truly one of the all-time greats of rock!

  • Awesome performance! Would never have known Steve Perry was lip-synching.

  • The "real" me is hating this, but the Closet Journey Fan in me is saying, YAAY! Funny, I never swooned over Steve Perry, yet I "accidentally" married a guy who LOOKS JUST LIKE HIM....(and our son is GORGEOUS, by the way....)

  • his hair omg.

  • Thanks for the video (balbuf), and no offense but there's no lip-syncing. I'm a musician for the last 32yrs and they did not do that on Midnight Special. It would have been impossible at that time anyway to do that for Steve while cutting out every other track. Some of the rest of you, stop being such Journey "snobs"....album sales sucked until Perry joined in 1977, and they had great hits with each band member change, 1977 to 1983 being their hottest period.

  • Steve Perry admits to waring a depends in this video.Look very close

  • @RBRUCEANGUS There was no such thing as DEPENDS in 1979,, WISE UP IDIOT

  • @RBRUCEANGUS I'll spell it out...laughing my ass off!

  • Is that a MR. Microphone??

  • What an amazing voice - perfect, strong, controlled, doesn't miss a note!

  • Steve is the best looking one out of the entire group!

  • ive boycotted journey since perry left, they will never get another hit.

  • LOL...they had a hit a year or two ago...maybe not as big as the old stuff but it got alot of air play...Love Perry the best though....

  • I wish he Wore More Manley Cloths he kinda looks like cher

  • I wish he Wore More Manley Cloths

  • all the glee cub girls in my school are like fucking obsessed with journey, cant say i blame em

  • Steve Perry looks like a woman here. Also looking at his outfit I wonder if this is where Vince McMahon got the inspiration for Tugboat's attire?

  • Top 40 chop monsters, true musicianship for a commercialized band unlike Rush, ect. but they definitely measure up to bands like Rush ect. Steve Smith is an incredible drummer still doing session/studio and clinic work today.

  • HAHA funny man!

  • lip synced !! yuck!

  • Comment removed

  • Just a great fucking song...that's all I'll say.

  • Girls usually don't have sideburns! He is such a pretty boy!

  • isn't that Valarie Bertinelie Van Halen singing lead in the days before Jenny Craig?!!!!! Damn she's good

  • Great singing, bad shirt.

  • I liked the songs where Gregg and Steve alternated on lead vocals better. I hate how they just stuck Gregg in the background : (

  • @funkychick60

I agree! Their voices blended so well together!

  • @PurpleBeeker Yes they did!! Like on "Just the same way", or "Anytime"

  • I loveeeeee Journey:) 70's rocked:)

  • even kiss played live. this is a joke

  • @krevice lol It is live buddy.....there really that good. Listen to the drums in the beginning. Then listen very closely to his voice. Its diffrent then the record. His voice is more naisaly kinda. Maybe pre recorded live, but this isnt the record there singin bro. And no, Journey was not a joke, just really talented. Kinda like Rush. Some bands are really just that good live.

  • Many of the Midnight Specials were pre-recorded and almost all of the "live" performances on American Bandstand were. Journey had just been on a major tour and they were likely exhausted. His voice was probably trashed and they felt pre-recorded would be better on national tv....I've seen them live, he sounds almost as good live. He was a remarkable frontman.

  • Steve Perry was here is what is known as a professional performer. Kind of like how Jeff Gordon is a professional driver. He knows how to deliver. Big time!

  • You have to remember this was the 70's

  • That's a GUY??? I honestly thought he was just a homely girl til I read these comments. Yuk!

  • Sweeeeeeeet! Thanks!

  • I used to watch this when I was 16 years old. We knew back then that it was recorded didn't care then and don't care now. I hate it when people post that on here like it's a big secret and they're sooooo wise to have figured it out. Just shut up and enjoy the video or go back to facebook.

  • @krammit69 i noticed though, that most of the midnight special performers played live...i wonder why they didn't?

  • @fanostyx I was thinking that most of these were recorded but after checking them out you're right most of them were live. So yeah I'm wondering why they didn't do it live.

  • Great songs - but why is he dressed like Karen Carpenter?

  • Um, can we get guys with nice butts to start wearing pants like those again? Please? Oh Steve, those were the days.....

  • I won't spend 10 Cents to see the NEW Journey...But would sell my next child(lol) to see Steve again!

  • @sheryl46 LOL

  • @sheryl46 --------funny and I relate!

  • @sheryl46 It is like Styx You get rid of the best part of the band and still think you have it, NOT!

Steve Perry one of the all time greats. Sir David

  • @sheryl46 Agree!!!!!

  • "Can't get much better than this"??....how about LIVE! Oh well, better than watching that Bieber chick lip sync.

  • Live my ass.

  • What's the lead singer's name? She's pretty sexy...

  • @steelyman40 she is a he so your gay - no worries - he's an excellent vocalist and his name is Steve Perry.

  • @texjones2010 sorry tex, this is totally syched. watch the ending if you don't believe me

  • this is the life....

  • Can't get much better than this.

  • he's gotta be a fudge nudger!! folk will always say, but he was always surrounded by hot women!!! so was george michael !!! he turned out to be a clay digger too!

whats george michael & wellington boots got in common?? they both get sucked off in bog's!!!

  • sometime extrememly good looking men can look a little effeminant,, I'd bet my bottom dollar there was nothing fem. about Steven Perry.. I'd jump on him in a second and i'm also married to a good looking man .

  • @cindygibbsbarfield Great group but why side burns and shaved pits??? Joking, saw them twice in 79, fantastic!!!

  • @cindygibbsbarfield Maybe he didnt inherit a lot of body hair! You never know. But it would have been gross to see a lot of hair hanging out of his cap sleeves!

  • @cindygibbsbarfield Amen!! There wasn't an feminine aspect about him. Steve Perry appealed to women!!!! I know... I'm one of many.. His voice was awesome and he just made a woman want him. Journey was never the same after he left. If I'd had the chance...I would have jumped on him too. LOL

  • @cindygibbsbarfield DOES YOUR HUBBY KNOW YOU SAID THIS? I BET NOT

  • steve is so hot!!

  • I loved this band so much growing up I named my daughter after them "Journey-Lynn" I am only 32yrs old and still love Steves voice
